Chapter 1093: 028 Having a Daughter? (Second Update)

Having participated in the competition at Red Smoke Pavilion, it was no longer early, so the pair happily merged with the crowd and noticed a vendor selling little meatballs nearby. They each ordered a portion of meatballs.

Claims of meatballs notwithstanding, flour was actually the main ingredient. Otherwise, a bowl of meatballs for five copper coins would certainly have meant a loss.

Perhaps because they had just had too much fun, they both were hungry, and even though the meatballs weren’t that tasty, they finished them off completely, soup and all.

After wiping their mouths, Xia Zheng’s fussiness kicked in again, "Tsk tsk, calling these meatballs, they should be called dough balls!"

Having said that, he still cheekily leaned into Lin Yuan’s ear and said with a twinkle in his eye, "Wife, when will you make some meatballs for your husband to eat? It’s been a few days since I ate your cooking, and I really miss it."

Lin Yuan was using a handkerchief to wipe her mouth. Hearing this, she pushed Xia Zheng’s face away and glanced at the busy old couple, chiding him with a look, "Keep it down, why didn’t I hear you complaining while eating the meatballs? Now that you’re full, you start to pick at everything, not caring if it would hurt the feelings of the elderly if they heard you."

Xia Zheng grinned, his bright white teeth gleaming, "I know how to measure my words, rest assured, the old folks can’t hear me."

Lin Yuan gave him a stern look, "In that case, Young Master Xia, please treat this meal as your pleasure."

"Deal!" Before Lin Yuan even mentioned it, Xia Zheng had already taken out two taels of silver from his purse and placed them on the table, calling out to the bustling elderly couple, "Let’s settle the bill."

Before waiting for a response from the elders, the two walked away, one ahead of the other.

Watching Xia Zheng strut, Lin Yuan couldn’t help but laugh, "Since you’ve been so sensible just now, one of these days I’ll make you some real meatballs."

"Great!" Xia Zheng couldn’t resist leaning in again, giggling, "I want beef meatballs."

He also didn’t forget to instruct, "They’re only for me to eat, not for Lao Fan or Xiao Linshuang!"

Pfft.

Lin Yuan couldn’t help but laugh, giving his hand, which was holding hers, a firm squeeze.

By this time, the street was beginning to thin out. Having walked around for so long, Lin Yuan was also getting tired. Besides, she had to visit princess Anle at General Mansion the next day, so she and Xia Zheng headed home early.

Thinking of visiting General Mansion stirred both anticipation and a bit of worry in Lin Yuan. She wasn’t afraid of much, except for Xia Zheng’s father. She wondered what the man, who used to chase after Xia Zheng with a sword, was really like.

With these thoughts, Lin Yuan casually asked Xia Zheng about it.

Xia Zheng raised his eyebrows and pursed his lips, still looking carefree, "Him? Just a paper tiger. Don’t look at how fierce he is on the battlefield; actually, at home he doesn’t manage anything. No, not that he doesn’t manage, he can’t. My mother calls all the shots, and he really can’t get a word in."

Isn’t that the perfect example of a henpecked husband?

Upon hearing this, Lin Yuan couldn’t resist giving Xia Zheng a side-eye. Why did he speak about his father with such unkind laughter in his tone?

But after this conversation, Lin Yuan felt somewhat reassured. No matter what, he was Xia Zheng’s father, and surely he wouldn’t give her a hard time.

The pair chatted and laughed the whole way home, and it didn’t seem so far after all. Judging by the time, Xiao Linshuang and the others should have been home already.

Indeed, upon returning to the spot where they climbed over the wall when they left, Dong Qing and Lin Yi were already waiting there.

After a few days, Lin Yi was still as cold as ever, while Dong Qing came running over with a big smile. Yet, upon seeing Lin Yuan, his expression became flickering and a bit awkward.

Xia Zheng’s eyebrows rose in query. Why did Dong Qing seem to be afraid of Lin Yuan? Stranger still was that the man refrained from nagging upon seeing him, which was quite disconcerting.

Lin Yuan, however, understood. Dong Qing was afraid due to her previous threat of cutting off his tongue. She couldn’t help but laugh to herself, silently promising never to scare the kid like that again.

Dong Qing and Lin Yi had the ladder prepared already. Having learned from their previous experience, Xia Zheng didn’t dare to carry her over the wall this time. They both dutifully climbed the ladder to return home.

Once on the ground, Lin Yuan looked up at Xia Zheng, who was still smiling foolishly at her from atop the wall, and waved her hand, "Go back now, get some rest early."

Xia Zheng giggled, showing no intention of descending. Instead, he propped his arms on the wall, resting his chin on them, "You go to your room first. I’ll head back after you’re inside."
