Chapter 1023: 007 Home Controller (Second Update)_2

Seeing their son’s sleeping face, the couple shared a knowing smile. The most blessed in this household was this little one, having never suffered since infancy and loved dearly by his parents and three sisters.

After leaving her parents’ room, Lin Yuan saw Yin Xing at the door holding a lantern for her. This Yin Xing was the round-faced little girl from before. Despite her adorable baby-face, her character was rather formidable; she was decisive and efficient in her work, and even Shui Xian seemed to defer to her.

"Miss, you’ve come out? It’s dark now, let me light your way," said Yin Xing, as she lit the extinguished lantern.

Following behind her, Lin Yuan casually struck up a conversation, "Yin Xing, how long have you been in the General Mansion?"

"I was sold to the General Mansion when I was six," answered Yin Xing sweetly, with a smattering of laughter in her voice that was very endearing.

Lin Yuan was somewhat puzzled, "Sold?"

Yin Xing smiled and nodded, "Yes, my mother died in childbirth with my little brother, and my father chose not to save her for my brother’s sake. Without a mother, life is particularly tough, especially for a girl. The following year, to get a new wife for my brother, my father sold me to pay for the bridal dowry."

Lin Yuan’s brow furrowed unconsciously, setting aside what sort of man her father was, just abandoning his wife in childbirth was despicable!

However, there was not a trace of resentment in Yin Xing’s voice. Lin Yuan carefully asked, "You, don’t you hate your father?"

Yin Xing sighed slightly, "Hate? I did once. My mother gave birth to three daughters, and my father often beat and scolded her for it, and we sisters got our share of beatings too. I hated him then, but once he sold me, I stopped hating. I’m actually grateful he sold me; after coming to Xia Mansion, I finally got enough to eat and had new clothes to wear, and nobody hit me anymore."

Lin Yuan was taken aback and shook her head. The daughters of poor families were so pitiful and so tragic; just a bit of warmth, and they were profoundly grateful.

"Then, do you resent me for being placed by the princess at my side?"

Hearing Lin Yuan ask this, Yin Xing suddenly stopped in her tracks, turned around to bow, and spoke with serious tone, "Please forgive me, Miss. I spoke out of turn just now; I hope you’ll pardon me."

"What did you say wrong?" Seeing Yin Xing’s intense reaction left Lin Yuan perplexed.

No wonder Yin Xing was afraid; betraying one’s master was the greatest taboo in wealthy households. Those servants who turned their backs on their former masters usually met with bad ends. If a few words made Lin Yuan think that Yin Xing was disloyal to her, then Yin Xing would no longer have good days ahead in the Lin family.

But in this instance, Yin Xing was overthinking; Lin Yuan had asked without any particular intent.

"Miss, when I said it was good in Xia Mansion, I didn’t mean I wanted to go back, nor was I complaining. I hope you understand that," Yin Xing nearly knelt down to explain.

Seeing her like this, Lin Yuan finally understood and let out a chuckle, quickly helping her up, "You’re overthinking it. My question was just casual, I meant nothing by it. Actually, even if you hadn’t been sent by the princess, our family wouldn’t mistreat you, you can be assured of that."

Lin Yuan’s words completely reassured Yin Xing. Although they’d only been together for half a day, slaves like them had long since developed keen eyesight for discerning what sort of master was easy or difficult to serve.

"Even if you didn’t say it, Miss, I can feel it. The master and Madam are kind-hearted people, and you even more so, Miss. I’m not worried," Yin Xing said with a smile, her round cheeks plump and particularly cute.

The two continued on to Lin Yuan’s courtyard, which was right next to Lady Liu’s. It didn’t take long for them to arrive at the entrance.

A stranger maid was waiting at the door, who saluted upon seeing her arrival. After the two entered the yard, the maid approached and locked the gate.

Listening to the sound of the gate being locked, Lin Yuan was amused. Large households really were different, even locking the gates of the small courtyards at night! Suddenly, she remembered what Xia Zheng had said today; with each courtyard locked up like this, that fellow would have no chance to take advantage even if he wanted to.

This was Lin Yuan’s first time entering her own courtyard. It was dark and she could only make out the general layout, but it seemed to be rather large with plenty of flowers and trees planted around.

Inside the house, Shui Xian was spreading the bedsheets and hurriedly came out to greet her upon hearing the voices outside.

It was the first meeting between Shui Xian and Lin Yuan, and Shui Xian was a bit nervous, her hands hanging stiffly as she followed behind.

Lin Yuan just smiled without saying anything; there was plenty of time ahead to get to know each other and see what kind of people they were.

Upon entering the house, Lin Yuan suddenly felt a sense of warmth and familiarity. Looking carefully, she realized the layout was similar to the room she had stayed in at Fuman Building. There was no need to ask; it must have been Xia Zheng’s doing.

"Are the other rooms decorated the same as well?" she asked.

Yin Xing laughed, "No, Miss. Only your courtyard was specially ordered by the young master to be well tended."

It seemed the other courtyards were quite ordinary. But everyone had chosen their own courtyards after coming to the Capital city; how could Xia Zheng have known in advance which one she’d pick, so he could prepare it beforehand? What if one of her sisters had chosen it?

Shui Xian answered Lin Yuan’s question, "Oh, I heard about this. The second young master said that you, Miss, couldn’t stay idle and wouldn’t be comfortable living in those deep courtyards, and you’d definitely try to venture out. So, he reserved the outermost courtyard for you. And indeed, you did choose this one."

So that’s how it was. Lin Yuan chuckled; it seemed Xia Zheng was the one who understood her intentions best.

The day had been indeed exhausting, and perhaps because the room felt so familiar, Lin Yuan fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow, sleeping soundly throughout the night.
