Chapter 1173: Chapter 1179: Return to the Palace (4)
After several days in Lingbei, most of the things in the Space had been removed. Not only were the original objects left in Lingbei, but almost all of the crops were harvested and kept there as well.
Because of the scarcity of food in Lingbei, which mainly consisted of beef, mutton, and highland barley flour, Zhao Yun and the other hundred people found it hard to adjust their diets. Cai Wei thus harvested all the grains and cabbages from the Space for them and fished a lot of fish and shrimp from Lingxi River. She had them kept in basins for improving their diet later on.
She also left all the medicinal materials that were planted in the land for the Medical Center in Lingbei. If the Yishan Hall in the Capital ran out of medicine, they could buy some from other medical centers, but the one in Lingbei was the only facility around. Without medicine, they would have been left helpless, so Cai Wei didn’t hesitate to leave all the medicinal materials behind in the hopes of aiding the people of Lingbei!
Now, the fields in the Space were empty, except for a little grove and a patch of blooming Green Manzi, you would hardly find another crop.
After a good meal and rest, Cai Wei started the hard work of farming with Chang Mei.
Farming is actually a task that nourishes one’s character and temperament. Many ancient sages once secluded themselves in forests and led a life of personal farming. In Cai Wei’s time, many successful white-collar and golden-collar workers also gave up high-paying jobs in big cities to return to the deep mountains and lead a simple farming life.
Cai Wei was also deeply engrossed in this labor. When the dark soil was plowed open and seeds were sown and buried, it gave a sense of sowing hope, producing a beautiful anticipation!
She kept working until the evening and finally finished planting all the crops.
To reward Chang Mei for his hard work, Cai Wei specifically left the Space to go to the restaurant opened by Cao Jin, Crane Immortal Residence Inn, planning to treat Chang Mei and the Old Turtle to a good feast.
She had been to this tavern before, remembering the time when Huo Yuan invited Lord Han and his wife to propose marriage to her. Now, looking back, it seemed like another lifetime. In a blink of an eye, she had been married for many days. She wondered how Huo Yuan was doing now.
Upon entering the private room on the second floor, Cai Wei robustly ordered seven or eight dishes: Phoenix Tail Shark Fin, Spicy Pork Intestines, Flower Mushroom Duck Web, Steamed Bass, Stewed Pigeon in Milk, Shredded Cucumber drizzled in sesame oil and sesame, Sugarcoated Watermelon Pulp, and more, all delicious dishes!
Cai Wei sat by the window, looking at the scenery outside while eating leisurely, quietly enjoying the goodness of life. Chang Mei and the Great Immortal Turtle each took a corner of the table, both relishing their food.
Just then, a chorus of shouts came from downstairs.
"Damn those rebellious troops, aren’t you leaving quickly? Do you still think you’re the lords or young masters from the Marquis’s House? And still damn strutting around..."
Cai Wei leaned out, looking down to see a team of officers escorting prisoners on horseback, wielding whips and loudly scolding a line of prisoners in shackles. The prisoners wore uniform prison uniforms, with five-catty heavy yokes around their necks and heavy leg irons to prevent escape.
The prisoners seemed to have traveled a long distance, all of them looked utterly exhausted. Every step forward was strenuous, but the mounted officers were unsatisfied with their pace, cursing and complaining, "Damn these rebel troops, it’s all because of you lot causing trouble. I have to go all the way to that desolate place of Lingbei. Truly bad luck!"
It seemed that Du Ruohai and Jin Dapeng had arrived. Cai Wei withdrew her gaze and continued eating her food.
Although she disdained the haughty demeanor of those officers, she had no sympathy for the prisoners. There’s an old saying: "The pitiful have a hateful tale", and their current plight was a consequence of their own doing, they had no one else to blame!
