Chapter 1081: Chapter 1083: When I Catch You (3)

Nangong Yi helped Cai Wei up, oblivious to the Empress’s astonished expression, and calmly bent down to smooth out her skirt. After he arranged it perfectly, he then stood up, his demeanor composed and serene.

This behavior, indicative of a husband utterly devoted to his wife, quickly sparked a strong reaction among the high concubines present, especially Consort Li. Having been in the palace for half her life, aside from the two nights the Emperor had spent in her chambers when she first entered, she had been alone for the remaining twenty-odd years, lonely and solitary.

As a woman, she naturally craved that kind of marital affection and mutual respect. Though she held the title of a consort and enjoyed wealth and honor, facing the lonely nights by herself, she struggled through the decades. This life of solitude and loneliness was a cruel brilliance to her psyche and physiology, causing severe distortions in her heart.

She could not bear to see others flaunting their love!

Especially when a man could love a woman to such an extent!

It made her so envious she felt her eyes turning red!

Consort Yao, although envious of Cai Wei’s fortune, had a much calmer mentality than Consort Li. She merely covered her mouth with a handkerchief and chuckled twice, saying, "The Emperor and Empress are truly affectionate indeed!"

Consort Huo smiled, but did not dare make a sound. Consort Li, however, was much more acerbic, "Maybe the Emperor is just distressed that the Empress just got tired!"

The meaning behind those words was clear to all present. Nangong Yi’s eyes narrowed slightly, his devilish pupils filled with a light smile. When he looked at the speaker, he exuded an intense imperial aura, tinged with a barely concealed thirst for blood that sent chills down one’s spine.

Cai Wei glanced at him and, although she said nothing, Nangong Yi understood.

"Matters of the Imperial Harem, a woman’s matters, should be resolved by her. There is no need for him to intervene!"

Receiving the woman’s hint, Nangong Yi slowly turned his head, no longer looking at the old woman who had been warped by the isolation of the palace gates.

Cai Wei also paid no attention to her, as if she was not worth their concern. She bowed to Empress Dowager Mo and said, "Imperial Mother, because of the grand wedding today, I rose early and did not dare to eat anything. After being busy for most of the day, I felt weak. To avoid any impropriety in front of Imperial Mother and to prevent worry, I went back to my palace to rest for a while and felt slightly better before I came to see Imperial Mother. I hope for your forgiveness!"

Cai Wei offered a detailed explanation. Empress Dowager Mo, as Nangong Yi’s mother and the person closest to him aside from herself, was someone Cai Wei, despite not liking her, did not wish to create discord with, to spare Nangong Yi any difficulty.

Initially upset by Cai Wei’s tardiness, which she felt made her lose face in front of the other high concubines, Empress Dowager Mo had intended to scold her to vent her frustration. However, upon hearing her explanation, it was as though she had found a way to step down gracefully, and she swallowed the words of reprimand. After all, this daughter-in-law was the apple of her son’s eye, and scolding her would displeasure him and lead to his resentment toward her, a loss far outweighing any gain, which she was not willing to risk.

Empress Mo, understandingly, said, "If you are unwell, you should go back to rest earlier. Later, have Court Judge Yao come to give you a look and take good care of your health to hopefully conceive the Emperor’s heir soon."

Cai Wei respectfully replied, "Yes!" She then stepped forward, took the tea cup from Shaoyao’s hand, knelt before Empress Mo once more, and said, "Imperial Mother, please have some tea!"

With the daughter-in-law offering tea, Empress Dowager Mo’s mood lightened. She took a sip from the cup and handed it to a palace maid standing nearby. Then, taking off the Nine-tailed Phoenix Hairpin from her head, she personally placed it in Cai Wei’s hair as a gift, a gesture for their first official meeting. She instructed, "In the future, you will be in charge of serving the Emperor. Be diligent, take good care of the his daily needs, look after your own health well, and strive to carry the Dragon’s Seed soon, to provide the Emperor with heirs."
