Cai Wei’s eyes widened in disbelief.

How could he be here? She hadn’t told him when she would return, how did he know she’d be back at this time? Moreover, even if he did guess when she’d return, he should have been coming from the Capital to the Manor, not from the Manor to the Capital!

In her daze, Nangong Yi’s horse had already stopped in front of her. Seeing her, the man also seemed surprised; after a moment of shock, he stretched out his hand joyfully.

The Royal hunting ground in the suburbs of the Capital City stretched over a hundred miles with rolling hills and picturesque scenery. Amongst the foothills, the trees were lush, and the atmosphere was tranquil and enchanting, with fresh air all around.

As the dawn broke, Cai Wei and Nangong Yi were already together on horseback amidst the peaks.

Looking around, clouds surrounded the forest, with mountain streams and waterfalls, babbling brooks, chirping birds, fragrant flowers, and green grass carpeting the ground.

The intrusion of the two people disrupted the silence of the forest; where they passed, flocks of birds took to the sky, and several wild rabbits grazing on the grass were startled into jumping ahead, scurrying away from the horses’ hooves.

A white-furred wild rabbit, seemingly overwhelmingly startled, darted headfirst into a large tree during its escape. It flipped over and landed in the bushes, kicking its legs and raising its behind, unable to get up after several attempts.

Cai Wei caught this scene, at first startled, then she burst into laughter, collapsing onto Nangong Yi’s chest, tears streaming down as she pointed at the rabbit and asked Nangong Yi, "Did you just see that? Hahaha, it turns out the story of waiting for a rabbit to hit a tree stump is true, there actually are such foolish rabbits in the world that run straight into tree stumps..."

As she spoke, she laughed again, and the bright sunlight of early summer filtered through the trees, showering her face and body with light.

Because of riding at full speed the previous night, to protect against the chill, she wore a form-fitting riding outfit: a narrow-sleeved, silver-red waist-short jacket on top, paired with matching lantern pants tightly worn within roe skin boots, and a horse face skirt with two front panels. Around her waist, she wore a Pearl silk ribbon.

Her hair was not done up but left loose, a lock from each side of her ears twisted and securely fastened behind her head with an exquisite small flower crown inlaid with gems. Her long, shiny hair flowed like a waterfall, shinier than pearls and softer than fabric.

The flower crown had hollowed-out chrysanthemums all around, with four tassels hanging between the slightly curled chrysanthemum petals. Each tassel featured rice grain-sized gold pearls, and at the very bottom, a melo bead the size of a dragon eye.

With her laughter, the tassels swayed brilliantly, setting off her delightful and lovely appearance. She was truly radiant with elegance and allure, difficult to describe in words. When Nangong Yi looked at her, his eyes and eyebrows filled with deep laughter, his gaze landing on Cai Wei and catching his breath.
