Chapter 1030: Chapter 1032: Agreeing to Ascend the Throne (3)

However, County Magistrate Shen repeatedly emphasized that Qing County was a border region, frequented by Liaodan and Meng slaves, and hence not very safe. Cai Wei was Juhua’s best friend and also Madam Cui’s favorite junior. He had to ensure her safety to avoid any mishaps that would sadden the two women of the family.

Lord Shen County said this to show that his actions were not out of flattery or personal motives, but from a concern for his daughter, his friend, and the younger generation of his wife.

Cai Wei could not decline such earnest intentions and finally consented.

Throughout the journey, the grand spectacle made Cai Wei feel uncomfortable. In the past, whenever she traveled by the horse carriage, she always liked to lift the curtain and watch the street, but today, she just sat quietly inside, unwilling to witness the awe or hostile gazes of the people looking at her carriage.

Fortunately, Shen Mansion wasn’t far from "Lady He’s Roast Duck," and they arrived shortly after setting out.

Dun Zhu and Dan Zhu were genuinely happy to see Cai Wei; having not seen her for a month, the sisters had both gained a little weight and had more to talk about than before. Dun Zhu took Cai Wei’s hand and excitedly reported on their progress in learning their art, insisting on roasting a duck for Cai Wei to eat.

Cai Wei refused their eager hospitality, informing them that they could return to Lingbei with the people from County Magistrate Shen as early as tomorrow. It had been a long time since Dun Zhu and Dan Zhu left Lingbei, and ever since they learned that there would be no Daughter’s Rites for the next three years, they longed to return home. They missed their father and mother and the vast grasslands of their hometown. Upon hearing that they could go home and open a roast duck shop, they were both ecstatic...

Hearing that Cai Wei would soon visit the Nursing Home, Dun Zhu and Dan Zhu immediately rolled up their sleeves and personally roasted several golden, grease-laden ducks for the elders and children at the Nursing Home and cooked up two thick stacks of lotus leaf cakes before they would let her leave...

Because she intended to visit the Nursing Home, Cai Wei made a special trip to the market. She bought some dim sum, a large piece of fatty pork, a basket of eggs, and sneakily took two big fish out of "In Space." Nearly filling a whole horse carriage with various delicious foods, she left the market satisfied and headed toward Qing County’s Nursing Home.

Qing County’s Nursing Home was located in a manor more than fifty li to the east of Qing County. It was originally property of Juhua’s uncle and was later purchased by Cai Wei, who turned it into a Nursing Home, providing shelter and support to many of the weak, sick, and disabled.

Having left Qing County, the horse carriage headed eastwards; the further they went, the narrower and more desolate the roads became. Head Constable Zeng and Head Catcher Tian rode their horses, one in front of and one behind Cai Wei’s carriage. Suddenly, Tian, who was following behind, sped up to Cai Wei’s carriage and whispered through the curtains, "Miss, we are being followed!"

Upon hearing this, Cai Wei was immediately bewildered. She was veiled when outside, making it impossible for anyone to recognize her. Why would someone be following her?

She reached out and lifted the curtain slightly, asking, "How many of them are there?"

Head Catcher Tian looked back and said, "Not many, just four."

"Good, stop the carriage." Cai Wei tapped on the carriage wall, signaling the coachman to halt, "Head Catcher Tian, go tie them up and bring them to the County Government Office for a thorough interrogation to see who is following me and what their intentions are!"

"Yes, Miss, just a moment!"

Head Catcher Tian respectfully acknowledged the order, drew his saber from his waist with a swish, and pointing at the four followers not far behind, he shouted, "Men, seize those rogues—"

On hearing this, the Yamen runners unsheathed their swords and charged towards the four men with formidable shouts and swift action, showing their well-trained expertise.

County Magistrate Shen had sent two arresting officers and ten Yamen runners to escort Cai Wei. Besides Head Constable Zeng guarding beside her carriage, the remaining eleven charged forward, overwhelming and fast in their assault, a reflection of their disciplined training.
