Chapter 71: Are you Free!?

Edwin raised a brow. "A challenge?"

"Friendly match," Riku clarified, his tone playful but serious. "In your personal training room. No audience, just you and me. What do you say?"

Edwin glanced at the others in the class. A few students perked up, eager to watch, but Riku had clearly said no audience. That made it more serious.

"...Alright," Edwin nodded after a moment. "Let’s go."

The two left the class and headed toward Edwin’s personal training room, a benefit given to top-ranked students.

Meanwhile, in the Infirmary

Elsewhere, in the quiet and dimly lit infirmary building, Kael lay on a soft white bed, still recovering from his recent injuries. His chest rose and fell gently as he rested, a bandage wrapped around his shoulder and another across his side.

Beside him sat Cecelia, she quietly dipped a cloth into a bowl of cool water. She pressed it to Kael’s forehead, even though he wasn’t burning up.

She just didn’t know what else to do.

The room was peaceful, filled only with the faint sounds of the wind brushing against the windows and the rhythmic ticking of the old clock on the wall.

Cecelia looked at Kael’s sleeping face, her expression was worried.

"I don’t know this feeling. I don’t know why am I doing this?" she whispered, more to herself than to him.

"Even when you’re hurt, you still hide your pain..."

Kael stirred slightly but didn’t wake. Cecelia continued tending to him and her thoughts tangled between concern and something deeper she couldn’t name.

The sun was setting, painting the sky in soft shades of orange and purple as the evening slowly settled in. The academy grounds were quieter than usual. With no classes or professors around, many students had already left for the day.

Among them were Elysia and Jin Hladen, both walking calmly along the path that led toward the outer gates of Arcadia Academy. They had planned to go home early since the day felt unusually quiet and uneventful.

As they walked side by side, chatting lightly about training and the upcoming midterms, something strange suddenly caught Elysia’s eye.

Her steps slowed and her smile faded.

Far in the distance—just past the city rooftops—a black figure was speeding toward the academy.

It moved so fast it looked like a shadow streaking across the wind.

Elysia’s eyes widened.

"Hey... Jin?" she said slowly, her voice tense. "What is that thing?"

Jin followed his gaze, squinting against the fading sunlight. At first, he couldn’t see clearly. But then his face tensed.

"Huh... What the—? That thing looks... fierce."

The black figure darted between rooftops like a predator, kicking up dust as it moved.

It was fast—unnaturally fast.

"Is it... heading toward the academy?" Elysia asked.

Jin nodded slowly, his expression was serious now.

"Yes. I think it is. It’s coming this way—fast."

They stood still for a brief second, watching the figure race closer with every heartbeat.

Then Elysia grabbed Jin’s arm.

"Let’s hurry! We need to go back to the academy— now!"

Without wasting another moment, the two of them turned around and sprinted back down the path, heading toward the gates as fast as their legs could carry them.

Back inside the academy grounds, things were strangely still.

Most of the top-ranked students from the second and third years had already gone home, taking the day off due to the absence of the professors. Others had returned early to their dorm rooms, planning to rest.

At Valenwald Academy

The sun cast golden light through the grand windows of Valenwald Academy’s Central Hall, a towering structure of white stone and elegant arches, decorated with glowing enchantments and banners bearing the academy’s crest.

Valenwald Academy was the third-best hero school in the world. It was known for its strong history, powerful mages, and top sword fighters. But people always compared it to Arcadia Academy, which was number one.

Inside the Council Chamber of Valenwald Academy, the atmosphere was serious. The large hall was grand, with high ceilings, magical lights floating near the crystal chandeliers, and enchanted murals on the walls that moved slightly—showing past heroic battles and great victories of the academy.

In the center of the room stood a massive round table made of obsidian, smooth and black like polished glass. Eleven principals were seated around it, each wearing formal robes that matched the color and symbol of their department.

Each of these principals led a major branch of the academy—such as magic, sword arts, defense tactics, healing and alchemy. They had gathered today for something far more serious.

One chair, however, remained empty.

It belonged to Principal Rowan, head of the Beast Arts academy.

His seat was directly opposite the Head Principal’s. His absence was quietly noticed by all, but no one said anything yet. Some exchanged quick glances, but the meeting continued without addressing it.

All around the circular room, the outer walls were lined with over sixty two professors. They stood at attention, some with their hands behind their backs, others with arms crossed.

A few of them stood quietly, watching. Others leaned slightly toward their friend, whispering opinions and thoughts under their breath.

Some professors didn’t agree with each other. Some supported bold action, while others preferred caution. There were also those who didn’t trust the motives of other academies, especially Arcadia Academy, the top-ranked institution in the world.

Tension flowed just beneath the surface.

And with what was about to be discussed, that tension was only growing stronger.

At the head of the table stood Principal Elric Durnholde, one of the academics principals . He raised a hand to silence the low murmur of conversation.

"Shall we begin the purpose of the meeting today" he said. "Let us first address our primary concern—Arcadia Academy’s recent proposal."

A slight shift rippled through the room. Some professors crossed their arms. Others rolled their eyes.

From one of the seats, Principal Lysandra Vale, head of Arcane Combat, spoke first.

"They’ve sent proposals already, haven’t they?" she said, tone sharp.

Elric nodded. "Yes. Principal Aldric of Arcadia Academy has once again requested alliance and cooperation regarding the suspected demon organization they’ve been tracking. He claims the Demon Lord himself is involved."
