Chapter 52: The Group One!
Group One – Maw of Silent Echoes
The wind howled softly around the narrow entrance of the dungeon, known as the Maw of Silent Echoes.
It was very dark and quiet inside the cave.
The rough walls were covered in deep shadows, and the silence was so strong that even small sounds like footsteps seemed loud and scary.
Group One, consisting of 47 students, was led by Elysia, who stood at the front with a serious expression.
"Let’s move," she said firmly.
Without hesitation, they began walking into the tunnel.
As they moved deeper into the mountain, the light behind them slowly faded.
The stone walls grew colder and rougher.
Moisture dripped from above. Soon, the entire path was cloaked in heavy darkness.
Some of the students began to whisper nervously.
"It’s too dark... I can’t see anything."
"Where are we even going?"
"Did the professor mention this part?"
As they continued walking through the dark, winding passage, a strange feeling settled over the group.
The deeper they went, the quieter it became—so quiet that even a single step or breath sounds very loud.
Every small sound they made—footsteps, whispers, even the rustle of their clothes—seemed to bounce back off the rocky walls.
This eerie silence made the atmosphere even more uncomfortable.
A few students at the back of the group began to slow their pace.
Their eyes darted around nervously, and some tightened their grip on their weapons.
The unnatural quietness made them feel like they weren’t alone, as if something might be hiding just beyond the shadows, watching them.
The echoes played tricks on their ears, making it hard to tell where sounds were coming from.
One student muttered under their breath, "This place gives me the creeps...
Then, Professor Kalden, who was walking silently at the last of the group, raised his voice.
"Use your firelight stones," he said calmly. "It will help you see."
One by one, they searched for lighting wood and fired the light, casting shadows on the walls but giving everyone just enough visibility.
The tunnel now glowed faintly with orange and yellow hues.
Despite the tension, Elysia remained composed.
Her eyes scanned every corner, every crack, and she didn’t slow her pace.
"She’s really taking this seriously," one student whispered to another.
"She always does," someone replied.
Unlike some of the others, Elysia wasn’t just here to pass the test—she had to improve her strength.
She was determined to lead the group safely and efficiently.
With no distractions and no mistakes.
===================================================================
As they went deeper, the shadows moved in strange ways, like they were alive. Some stretched across the walls, twisting and curling.
A cold wind brushed past their feet, even though there was no opening for air.
At the front, Elysia led the way, her face was hard and eyes alert.
Behind her, a cluster of students followed closely—some confident, others clearly nervous.
Then it happened.
Without warning, a loud snap echoed through the tunnel and followed by silence.
Too silent.
Before anyone could move, shadow wolves suddenly attacked from the darkness. They made no sound—no growls, no steps—only the soft thuds of people being hit.
"AMBUSH!" someone shouted—but the sound vanished, completely swallowed by a strange silence spell in the air.
Chaos broke out instantly.
One student was knocked to the ground as a shadow wolf pounced on them.
Another student, caught off guard, dropped their staff when sharp claws slashed across their shoulder, leaving them bleeding and in pain.
Everyone was feared in the group. Some even froze due to fear. Others looked around in panic, unsure where the attacks were coming from.
But in the middle of it all—Elysia didn’t hesitate.
With sharp reflexes, she turned on the spot and swung her sword in one fast, clean arc.
Her blade sliced through a wolf mid-air just as it leapt toward her.
The creature let out a loud cry—its voice silenced by the magical field—then burst into black smoke and vanished.
Elysia’s eyes stayed focused and her stance was solid.
"Gather in a cluster!" she shouted, with her voice.
"Don’t scatter!"
She stood calm.
While others panicked, she took charge, trying to bring order back to the group before more got hurt.
The students tried to follow her command.
A second wolf leapt toward her. She raised her arm instinctively and blocked with her forearm, the creature’s claws raking down her armored sleeve.
Blood splattered the ground. The pain made her stagger, but she didn’t fall.
With a loud cry, Elysia pushed back with all her strength.
Her sword suddenly burst into flames, bright and hot. The fire lit up the dark tunnel, forcing the shadow wolves to back away.
Even though the magical silence still blocked sound, the light from the fire couldn’t be stopped.
In that flash of red light, everyone could clearly see Elysia’s injured arm.
Blood was running down her sleeve, but she didn’t stop. Her eyes were sharp and full of determination.
She charged forward.
With precise swordplay and bursts of flame, she cut through two more wolves.
Her movements were sharp, practiced—but she was clearly putting a lot of effort.
She breathed heavily.
The silence magic made coordination hard; the group could barely communicate.
Still, she didn’t stop.
Another wolf latched onto her leg, sinking its teeth into the side of her calf.
Elysia screamed.
Gasping, she stabbed her swords down, killing the wolf that had latched onto her leg. She rolled and crushed it beneath her.
Another shadow wolf leapt at a fallen student.
Without thinking, Elysia threw her sword. It soared through the air and pierced the wolf in the chest just in time.
Then, the silence magic faded.
Students gasped for breath. Some were bleeding. One student sat shaking against the wall. But they were alive.
Because Elysia—a Rank 2 Swordsman—had taken charge.
But she hadn’t done it alone.
Many students fought back—some used magic, others their weapons. A magic spell saved one student.
Still, Elysia killed the most. Her swords pushed the wolves back. Her voice, though faint, kept the group together.
Above them, Professor Kalden stood on a ledge, watching quietly. He wrote names in the list:
Elysia von Arctria
And gave her a red mark of distinction.
Elysia limped to her sword and picked it up. Her arm was bleeding, and her leg hurt—but she stood tall.
"You okay?" a student asked.
"Just a scratch," she replied, even though it wasn’t.
And some of the healers in their group healed her.
She turned to the group. "We stay close. These wolves use silence to hunt. If we get split up, we’re finished."
