Told You I Can Turn Back Time -
Chapter 112: Exorcism
Chapter 112: Chapter 112: Exorcism
Just as Bai Yiyi had wiped out the bandits ahead of her and was about to return to the carriage, she heard cries for help.
It turned out that someone had just hidden among the bodies and narrowly escaped disaster.
The slender figure struggled to push aside the corpses and, covered in blood, ran towards her: "Female hero... save me!"
The Puppet Girl, who had just been moving forward, suddenly stopped and turned around to look at him coldly, discovering that he was a teenager in his teens.
The teenager looked as though he was so starved that his skin clung to his bones. Seeing the girl turn around, he quickly said, "My name is Niu San. I came out to flee the famine with my fellow villagers, and we ran into these goddamned bandits. If not for the female hero’s rescue, I fear I would’ve been left for dead in the wilderness."
"Please, female hero, show mercy again and take me with you on the road? I can do anything..."
As he spoke, Niu San knelt down and incessantly kowtowed to the Puppet Girl.
He knew that if this formidable and invincible female hero didn’t take him along, and he continued on his own in this desolate wilderness, there was a very high chance he would meet a violent end.
"What did you call me?"
"Fe... Female hero."
Bai Yiyi thought to herself with emotion, "It’s been so long, so long since I’ve heard anyone call me a female hero."
The Puppet Girl said indifferently, "Get on."
So, moments later, Niu San was brought onto the carriage and, after traveling to the next village, he was let down by the Puppet Girl.
Amidst Niu San’s profuse thankfulness, Lin Xing and Master Bai continued on to the next town.
Lin Xing looked at the Puppet Girl and said, "Master Bai, this puppet of yours is looking more and more human now. On the way just now, no one could tell there was anything wrong with it, which shows that this training has been very effective."
Bai Yiyi: "Heh heh."
In the following journey, Lin Xing found that he didn’t need to worry about anything. All he had to do was practice Spiritual Vision in the carriage every day. Everything else—driving, dealing with bandits, lodging, and eating—was eagerly taken care of by Bai Yiyi.
Initially, the movements of the Puppet Girl, under Bai Yiyi’s control, were somewhat stiff and jerky, but after continuously practicing speaking, fighting, and interacting, the Puppet Girl, although still having a cool facial expression and tone of voice, was becoming more and more human in her words and deeds.
Half a month later, the two arrived at a large city in He Xi Prefecture, where they saw many people gathered around a notice.
Lin Xing also went over to take a look and learned that the Wuding Army of He Xi Prefecture was recruiting experts for ghost exorcism.
"Ghost exorcism?"
Seeing the content of the notice, Lin Xing’s eyes lit up, thinking to himself, "Could it be a haunting?"
He looked at the notice’s date and thought, "Is the appointment in three days?"
Then Lin Xing and Master Bai found an inn to stay in and, on the third day according to the notice, they went in search of the address.
Upon arriving, they learned that the target place was an official government building.
Even before Lin Xing had arrived, there were already over thirty people gathered at the entrance of the office, including monks, nuns, Taoists, Daoist nuns... as well as an array of oddly dressed individuals whose backgrounds were not apparent. It seemed that many of them knew each other and were exchanging pleasantries.
As he mingled with the crowd and listened to their chattering, Lin Xing learned that this building used to be the official government centre of He Xi Prefecture.
But ever since He Xi Prefecture had been taken over by the Wuding Army, this government building had been used as Zhao Tianlong’s Commander Mansion.
He heard a monk say with a smile, "To think even Daoist Tianfeng has been invited."
An old Taoist sighed, "I have long predicted that Commander Zhao’s daughter is afflicted by the Stars of Loneliness, but it’s a pity the Commander did not believe me and vainly tried to defy fate. Now, asking me here again, I fear it’s too late to change anything."
Hearing the Taoist’s boast, a disdainful old woman interjected, "The Commander’s daughter being afflicted by the Stars of Loneliness? Who in this city, inside or out, doesn’t know about it? And it’s your prediction? Tianfeng, you scruffy old thing, what act are you putting on?"
Lin Xing pondered with intrigue, "The ’Lonely Star of Destruction’?"
Watching the two quarrel fiercely without much substance, Lin Xing, after listening for a few lines, walked away with the Puppet Girl and tuned into the idle chatter of others.
He discovered that most of these individuals seemed to be well-known professionals from He Xi Prefecture who had always been in charge of religious rituals for praying to gods and conducting weddings and funerals, or performing sacrificial divinations.
Soon after the monks, Taoists, and laypeople at the entrance interacted with each other, a steward-looking person came out from the yamen, scanned the crowd, and announced, "If you are here in response to the Commander’s summon to subdue the ghost, please follow me."
Thus, Lin Xing and Bai Yiyi, along with a large group of people, entered the Commander Mansion. They proceeded, stopping here and there, until the steward led them to a small courtyard.
Upon entering, Lin Xing noticed that more than a dozen people, a mix of men and women, young and old, Taoists and monks, Divine Han and witches, were already waiting, giving the feeling of stepping into some bizarre sacrificial site.
Among them, several had a dignified and awe-inspiring presence, convincing in their composure.
These individuals who were introduced into the courtyard early on obviously held higher status and reputation than those who had just been waiting outside the door with Lin Xing.
Standing in this courtyard, Lin Xing and Bai Yiyi seemed rather inconspicuous in comparison.
Listening to their conversations, he and Bai Yiyi gradually learned about these people’s accomplishments.
A Tianyan Taoist was boasting about how his simple three-word divination made a butcher immensely wealthy a few years later.
Elsewhere, a monk known as Fa Guang was recounting how he had just subdued a thousand-year-old flying stiff in a southern village last month, which drew rounds of applause.
In the blink of an eye, another vibrantly dressed Divine Han boasted about a soul-summoning he performed last year, filled with twists and turns that enthralled the listeners.
After making the rounds, Lin Xing sighed to himself, "There sure are a lot of professionals in He Xi County."
Then he began to worry a bit, "Dealing with these many masters for this evil spirit is going to be troublesome..."
Bai Yiyi, looking at how these people were confidently chatting away, felt that not everything they said was entirely true.
But then she thought about her past conversations with Lin Xing where she had shown timidity on the topic of evil spirits, and decided not to say anything.
Following that, everyone continued to wait in the courtyard, but it was as though they were forgotten.
From the sun high in the sky until sunset.
Aside from being served meals, no one else paid them any attention.
Bai Yiyi, already impatient, felt she was being undervalued.
Lin Xing, however, remained calm and collected, standing in a corner of the courtyard, using his spiritual vision to observe his surroundings and continuously honing his skills.
Just then, the courtyard gate opened once more.
A middle-aged man with a wolfish and eagle-eyed look, fierce and grim in appearance, led a group of soldiers towards them, drawing a low murmur from the crowd.
This stern-faced man was none other than Commander Zhao of the Wuding Army, one of the direct disciples of the Divine Dragon Gang Leader, known in the jianghu as the Nine Heavens Divine Dragon.
He was also the true ruler of the entire He Xi Prefecture at present.
However, Commander Zhao appeared slightly haggard now, occasionally revealing a flicker of weariness in his eyes.
Following closely beside Commander Zhao was a young monk with kind eyes and a valiant spirit.
At the sight of the young monk, many who recognized him were struck with ripples of revelation in their minds.
The Tianyan Taoist thought, "Is that Master Kongchan from the Da Guangming Temple? To think the Commander personally welcomed him."
Another Divine Woman thought to herself, "Heh, no wonder we’ve been kept waiting for so long. It seems like we’re just accessories in the Commander’s eyes, and he’s been waiting for Master Kongchan from Baiyang Temple this whole time."
Similar realizations gradually emerged among many present.
