Chapter 100: Chapter 100: Conversation and Help

This was Zheng Weiwei and Lin Xing’s second meeting.

Zheng Weiwei had always been filled with all sorts of curiosity for this mysterious patient number four.

But for unknown reasons, the patient always spent long periods away from Building C, making it difficult for Zheng Weiwei to interact with him.

During this meeting, she noticed a huge change in Lin Xing compared to the last time they met.

He no longer appeared as composed and normal, his eyes occasionally revealing a deep confusion as if he felt a sense of foreignness towards everything around him.

Even Lin Xing’s demeanor seemed noticeably different to Zheng Weiwei, which was hard to describe.

If she had to put it into words, it was as if Lin Xing had become a completely different person.

Zheng Weiwei looked at him silently, then tentatively asked, "Hello, Lin Xing, do you remember me?"

Lin Xing shook his head, "You look familiar, but I can’t recall."

Zheng Weiwei recalled the dream he had mentioned last time, that endlessly recurring dream.

So, she continued, "You’ve reincarnated many times again, haven’t you? So you don’t remember me?"

Lin Xing thought for a moment, then said, "It’s not just reincarnation; this time in my dream, I lived through a complete childhood."

Zheng Weiwei exclaimed, "A complete childhood? Are you saying you spent several years in one dream?"

"Something like that," Lin Xing spoke indifferently, "The dream was too realistic. I still remember my parents in the dream, the wrinkles on their faces, the sensation of running through fields, the chilly splash of water on my face from a creek..."

"It was a childhood filled with farming, wood chopping, and hunting."

"But you know, I actually grew up in the city from childhood, right?"

Seeing Zheng Weiwei nod, Lin Xing seemed relieved as he let out a sigh, "That’s what I thought... Those memories from my dreams aren’t from my real childhood; they are all fake."

Watching Lin Xing relax for a moment, Zheng Weiwei then began to rub her head with some frustration.

She pondered over what he had said and surmised, "Although you know they are fake, because those memories felt so real, you are having trouble distinguishing them?"

"Exactly." Lin Xing sighed, "At first, I couldn’t recall whether I was ’me’ in the dream or ’me’ in the real world."

"Later, as I kept sorting these memories and combining them with reality, I gradually saw them for what they were."

"The memories from the dreams were all fake."

"But I can’t forget these false memories; they continue to influence me."

Listening to Lin Xing, Huang Weiwei suddenly remembered some strange historical cases.

Historically, there were people who claimed to have suddenly acquired memories of past lives, such as suddenly speaking a foreign language, suddenly knowing segments of history unknown even to experts, or even suddenly having knowledge of past-life experiences that they should not have known...

Many such individuals were considered frauds, and many were thought to suffer from mental illnesses.

Regarding the existence of past-life memories, Huang Weiwei believed that so-called past-life memories might actually be a form of latent memory.

Hence, Huang Weiwei said, "Have you heard about those cases where people awakened memories of their past lives?"

"Your situation sounds somewhat similar to theirs—aside from the frauds, many people might be mistaking latent memories for what they call ’past lives.’"

"Could these memories you obtained in your dreams also stem from latent memories within you?"

"Is it made up of all sorts of information you come across in your daily life, the kind of information you didn’t pay attention to, but was actually recorded?"

"Perhaps your dreams correspond to the various experiences you had during your growth?"

A glint flashed in Lin Xing’s eyes, "Past life memories?"

He thoughtfully said, "Right, when did this memory occur? Where is the time point?"

Hearing Lin Xing come up with other marvelous ideas, Huang Weiwei quickly said, "That’s not what I mean. I think you shouldn’t delve too deeply into these memories from your dreams; it’s easy to get increasingly stuck."

Lin Xing nodded and temporarily set aside his recent thoughts, then spoke, "I came here this time to ask if there is any way to help eliminate the influence of these memories?"

"Like hypnosis or something."

"Or maybe some prescription drugs."

Seeing the other person shake their head, Lin Xing felt somewhat disappointed.

Huang Weiwei suggested, "You could go out more often, watch more TV, browse the internet, socialize with friends; all these should help avoid the influence of these memories on you."

Lin Xing nodded and walked out.

Although he hadn’t resolved the problems caused by the memories, seeing the doctor also believing these memories were false reinforced Lin Xing’s conviction.

As he walked back to the ward, he murmured to himself, "I must stay firm in my heart and not let these false memories interfere with my self-perception."

"Yeah, what the doctor said last was good; perhaps I could surf the internet more and watch more contemporary news, to dilute the influence of the false memories."

Soon after returning to the ward, Lin Xing discovered that Lv Ming had already been waiting outside the hospital room.

Lin Xing looked at him, puzzled, and asked, "What’s the matter?"

Lv Ming said, "Lin Xing, there is something that might require your help."

Lin Xing asked, "What is it?"

Lv Ming explained, "You know, the natives of the Mirror World tend to overreact."

Lin Xing nodded, thinking to himself that calling it overreacting was an understatement; murder and arson were commonplace in that world.

Lv Ming continued, "Actually, during your absence, several door incidents happened nationwide, and some people from the Mirror World accidentally entered our side. Fortunately, they were handled properly and didn’t cause too much harm."

"For example, here in Building C, there are two more patients now."

"However, a couple of days ago, there was an unexpected incident, a door event occurred in Changqing City in the north, and a native from the Mirror World entered our world."

"This person’s power far exceeded our previously captured targets, and after killing several people, he broke through our blockade."

Lin Xing’s eyes flickered, showing concern, "Did they find him?"

Lv Ming sighed, "The opponent is hiding in a densely populated city; the hardest part isn’t finding him but how to capture him with minimal casualties."

"After all, the various weapons we created in the past were never meant for individuals with such fighting capabilities, and our combat personnel also lack experience."

"Just in time for your return, the authorities would like to ask for your help to collaborate with the troops in capturing this person."

Lin Xing nodded, thinking, "Our world has been too peaceful for too long, and the advancements in war and weapon technologies might have been minimal over the past century, plus the human factor..."

He spoke up, "I understand. The lunatics from the Mirror World are all merciless killers; if we let them roam here, it would be like letting a tiger into a flock of sheep. Besides, you’ve helped me a lot, so it’s only right for me to help you guys this time."

So, quickly, Lin Xing boarded a plane headed for Changqing City, prepared to participate in this capturing mission.
