Chapter 90: Chapter 90 Dark Fear

"Is anyone there... Gu Fan..." Lin Xi treaded lightly in the darkness, an unsettled feeling creeping over her, leaving her cold and chilled, as if being watched by something horrific.

At this moment, Lin Xi knew her situation was no better than her missing classmates. Still, she comforted herself, convinced by Yang Xinran’s hint about a surprise prepared by Gu Fan. Hence, Gu Fan should be there, and there was no need for her to be scared.

"Gu Fan, if you don’t appear right now, I’m going to get angry." Lin Xi thought that the dimming of the lights created a more romantic atmosphere as she tried to suppress her underlying dread.

The longer the darkness persisted, the more disconcerting it became. Lin Xi knew Gu Fan wouldn’t play such a prank. If he had indeed planned a surprise, he would have unveiled it right after the lights dimmed. He wouldn’t let her wait in the darkness, amidst restlessness and fear, for so long.

Turning around, intending to retrace her steps, Lin Xi’s eyes began to adjust to the darkness. She sprinted, guided by her familiarity with the multimedia center, she knew the direction to the main door.

However, out of the corner of her eye, Lin Xi spotted a movement in the dark corridor. The sight filled her with foreboding dread, and she dashed towards the exit.

As she neared the door, to her astonishment, it didn’t budge. Why? She had just entered through this very door. To her dismay, it had been locked.

"No way!" Lin Xi’s attempt to pull the door proved fruitless. It dawned upon her that she was trapped.

"There is another way out. This place has other exits, and there are the library’s windows." Overwhelmed by fear, Lin Xi distinguished that the darkness was a significant disadvantage. The first thing she should do is remain unseen.

Lin Xi took refuge in a dark corner. She dared not use her phone to call Gu Fan. The phone’s light in the darkness would attract undue attention, potentially hastening the impending danger. But without reaching out to Gu Fan, how was she to escape?

At the moment, Lin Xi instinctively checked her pockets. Her phone was missing, an ironic predicament that rendered the decision to either call Gu Fan or not irrelevant.

"Okay, I’m not afraid, I’m not afraid..." Lin Xi took solace in the thought that everybody was similarly impaired in the darkness. However, she was familiar with the surroundings, maybe offering her a glimmer of hope.

The multimedia center was vast, spreading five floors. Lin Xi believed that even if there were five or six people, they couldn’t find an individual in such a large place in such less time. With this, Lin Xi decided to play hide-and-seek with the unknown.

Lin Xi squatted in a gloomy corner, clutching her knees, surveying her surroundings. Overwhelmed with terror, she tried to regulate her loud, fear-induced racing heartbeat.

"Hold on a bit, hold on a bit. Gu Fan will definitely come find me when he realizes I’m missing." Lin Xi was terrified, as in the obscurity, anything seemed possible - like the appearance of a grotesque phantom screeching at her.

Suddenly, Lin Xi caught a shadow dash across in the dark. Then, the sound of something knocking against a table and chairs echoed. That noise was quite loud.

"There are other people, there really are!" With this realization, Lin Xi was convinced. Another person was in this same dark place. But, what did that mean?

A while later, Lin Xi spotted several more figures racing towards the direction of the previous noise. This put Lin Xi on edge—although they hadn’t spotted her, it seemed plausible that it could be her in their direct path any moment now.

Soon, Lin Xi heard the noise of chains. The people were likely locking the doors. Even though the place was vast and dark, if they started locking some classrooms to narrow down their search...

Currently, the more Lin Xi thought about it, the more terrified she became, her body trembling with increased ferocity. She didn’t want to be abducted. She was too young, too beautiful. She hadn’t tried her wedding dress yet, didn’t wear a ring yet, and hadn’t walked the aisle yet. She hadn’t yet wed the one she loved. She had so many expectations for life still.

In that moment, Lin Xi heard a thud on the main door, and the sound of people—suddenly a surge of surprise, and relief. It could be Gu Fan.

Turns out, Gu Fan, Lu Yi, and Jie had rushed to the multimedia center as soon as possible. But the main door was locked, causing Gu Fan to be filled with anxiety.

Being cautious, Lin Xi peered out and saw Gu Fan’s silhouette outside the glass door, instantly filling her with hope. She rushed forward, shouting, "Gu Fan, I’m here."

The sight of a lithe figure rushing towards him in the darkness and hearing Lin Xi’s voice shocked Gu Fan. However, he quickly collected himself, waved at Lin Xi, directing her towards him, asking her to run that way.

Just as there seemed a possibility to turn the tide of danger, out of nowhere, a figure emerged from the shadows, standing between Lin Xi and Gu Fan, scaring Lin Xi into halting her steps, too afraid to move forward.

Gu Fan, Lu Yi, and Jie were struck with terror, for the darkness within was too intense to permit any clear view of the figure. However, the figure had blocked Lin Xi’s way, which wasn’t a good sign.

Gu Fan, filled with fear, ferociously kicked at the glass doors in rapid succession. His efforts were for naught; the glass was too sturdy.

At that moment, Lin Xi, trapped in this dangerous situation, realized how serious the situation was. She had been discovered, and to worse, Gu Fan and the others could not get in. How could she, a frail woman, fight off these people?

With no other choice, Lin Xi had to seize the opportunity to live. She quickly turned and ran in another direction, hoping to use the darkness and terrain to shake off her followers.

Seeing Lin Xi run off, the eerie figure in the darkness also followed, seeming to have set its sights on her.

"Damn it! Let’s split up and find another exit." Without further consideration, Gu Fan began running around the Information Centre. If the front door was locked, then what about the side or back doors? At least he had to try. Who knows, one of the many classroom windows might be open.

Lu Yi and Jie were also aware of the emergency. Lu Yi started running around the Information Center in another direction, while Jie went to find the security guard and teachers, trying to mobilize as many people as possible. As long as there were more people, even if the enemy caught Lin Xi, they couldn’t take her away.

Soon, thanks to his speed and strength, Gu Fan successfully reached the side door. However, finding it locked as well, Gu Fan felt anxiety creep in. He decided not to attempt the back door, assuming it was also locked.

"There has to be a way. There has to be." Looking around, Gu Fan made up his mind and charged at a classroom window. He refused to believe that even the classroom windows were unyielding.

Using his momentum, Gu Fan forcefully smashed a window with his elbow. Despite the pain, Gu Fan didn’t care. He continued to break the glass to enlarge the opening. Thanks to Su Hui’s combat training, Gu Fan had the courage and ability to break the window easily.

However, when Gu Fan climbed through the window, he discovered another infuriating thing. The classroom door was locked. He couldn’t get into the corridor nor unite with Lin Xi.

Lin Xi was in danger at all times, and Gu Fan was stuck. This made him both anxious and furious, he even started swearing loudly.

"Hold on, if I make some noise over here, they might think Lin Xi is here." Gu Fan thought of a desperate plan. He picked up a chair in the room and started slamming it against the door, even throwing it on the ground.

Once done, Gu Fan hoped the noise would distract the enemies, buying Lin Xi some time. Then, he quickly climbed back through the broken window. If this room’s door was locked, it didn’t mean that others were. Gu Fan planned to try them one by one.

By this time, Lin Xi had been running for a while. She had made her way from the first floor to the second. She had no time to stop and think; wherever she ran to, that’s where she ended up. She didn’t even dare look back, for fear of coming face-to-face with a terrifying figure.

"Oh God, why does it have to be this scary?" The only thing Lin Xi was thankful for was that she was wearing flats. If she had worn high heels, not only would it have been inconvenient to run, the noise would have been greater.

Although Lin Xi tried to keep her steps as light as possible, even the smallest sound made her tremble in fear. Added to her intense exercise, her breathing had already become completely erratic.

As she was about to reach the restroom, Lin Xi considered hiding inside, but soon felt that it would be unsafe. If the enemy blocked the door, she would be a sitting duck.

Finally, Lin Xi found a temporary refuge, a pillar. She hid behind it, peeking out now and then to check if anyone was around. She had heard noises coming from a distance but was unsure of the situation.

"Stay calm, if Gu Fan has found this place, I should be safe." While comforting herself, Lin Xi saw a few figures pass by and go downstairs, seemingly attracted by the noise and wanting to find out what was going on.

Lin Xi thought that this was an opportunity. She ran upward as much as possible, hoping to get to the top floor. Even if she were caught, it would take the enemies more time to get her from the fifth floor to the first floor. The more time elapsed, the better chance she had of being rescued.

Though she thought so, Lin Xi didn’t dare to act lightly. After observing the surroundings and considering them safe, she started jogging forward.

Turning the corner of the corridor, Lin Xi could find the stairs going up. However, as unpredictable as events can be, the second Lin Xi turned the corner, she hit something. The impact immediately caused stars to appear before her eyes and she fell backward.

Despite the pain, Lin Xi still noticed that something was wrong. She thought that she might have bumped into the enemy and was immediately filled with dread, ready to scream. But then she heard another woman screaming in fear, possibly even more scared than she was..
