Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared
Chapter 88: You Are Old Classmates

Chapter 88: Chapter 88: You Are Old Classmates

In the parking lot beneath a regional government office building, Su Hui leaned against her car, her arms crossed, her expression solemn. She looked visibly anxious as if she had been waiting for a long time. This was a place she had not wanted to come to, because there were people here she’d rather not meet, but now, she had no choice but to tread this path.

Yesterday, Su Hui received a transfer order. On the surface, it was a promotion, but in actuality, it was a forcible removal from her current position. The higher-ups gave no explanation, only ordering Su Hui to comply with the orders, implying that she prepare to report to the new post.

Clues had started to surface concerning the case of the missing college students that she was investigating. However, just as she was getting somewhere, an order arrived, prohibiting her from having a share in the investigations. Su Hui felt that there was more to the case than meets the eye, it was complex, tremendously so, and undeniably difficult.

It dawned on Su Hui that, if even people in the police department were aiding them, and people with a considerable rank, how could she possibly contend?

"Damn it, if this were the old times, no one would dare to touch a strand of my hair." Su Hui seethed silently with hate but was helpless against her superiors. At the same time, she had to figure out a way to continue the investigation. After mulling it over, she decided to seek someone with influence for protection.

Emerging from the government office building, Yuan Cheng ran out with great zeal. Seeing Su Hui, he looked utterly incredulous, so impassioned he could barely speak. "I... you... I never thought you’d be willing to see me."

To which, Su Hui mustered a bitter smile. "Indeed, I also thought we would never meet again in this life, but well, life is full of surprises."

Yuan Cheng was no fool. He frowned slightly in discernment. "You look anxious. Are you in some sort of trouble? Tell me, I’ll do whatever I can to help."

Su Hui nodded. "Yes, I have encountered something. Initially, I didn’t want to bother you, but you’re the only one who can help at this point."

At her words, Yuan Cheng maintained his composure, though inside he was elated. "See, I am the best after all. How have you been coping without me since leaving?" he pondered internally.

Su Hui thought for a moment, her expression riddled with worry. "This is challenging to manage, isn’t it?"

"Don’t worry, I’ll do everything in my power. As long as it’s in this city, I can get it sorted for you. Trust me." Yuan Cheng declared wholeheartedly, vowing repeatedly to Su Hui that he would make sure of it. He had good reason to be so confident, his father held high office in the government, effectively making him one of the city’s leaders. His word held weight.

Su Hui was well aware of Yuan Cheng’s capabilities, which was why she had come to him. It was a move of desperation, her last resort.

"Here’s the situation. I got promoted, but the higher-ups want me to relinquish all detective work and manage regular police matters. I want to refuse the promotion, but I can’t. So...," Su Hui trailed off, her gaze filled with hope as she looked at Yuan Cheng.

"Promotions are a good thing. And why would you, a woman, want to risk your life as a detective..." Yuan Cheng’s words were cut short by a sharp look from Su Hui, followed by a resoundingly stern statement. "I love being a detective, you know this. Are you going to help me or not? If not, then be it... " As she said this, Su Hui began to turn as if to leave.

"Okay okay, don’t be angry, I’ll help. It’s just a phone call, after all." Yuan Cheng hurriedly pulled Su Hui back, treating the matter lavishly lightheartedly, as if it was a walk in the park.

Only when she received a satisfactory response did Su Hui allow herself a small smile. "If you manage to pull this off, consider it a favor you’ve done for me."

This time, it was Yuan Cheng’s turn to look hopeful. "Actually, I think I should be helping you. You don’t need to feel indebted. Besides, I hope we can still be friends. Having an extra friend isn’t a bad thing. I hope after this, we can sit down for a meal as friends, have a good chat."

"Sure, but my matter is rather urgent, I hope you can help me as soon as possible, can you?" Su Hui asked. In response, Yuan Cheng quickly nodded to assure her.

After expressing her gratitude, Su Hui drove away, leaving behind a lingering Yuan Cheng, visible in her rearview mirror. Seeing him there, Su Hui found a surge of emotions welling up within her. Things she supposed she had let go of hadn’t been entirely released.

Yuan Cheng still loved Su Hui. His help this time was not only due to the residual feelings he harbored but because he felt he owed her. More than that, Yuan Cheng wanted Su Hui to understand the benefits of staying together, even if she wasn’t the one he was marrying, he did not want to let go of Su Hui.

If Gu Fan were here, he would certainly scoff at this. Yuan Cheng dating Su Hui but refusing to marry her was akin to occupying the toilet without using it. Yet now, Yuan Cheng wished to marry another, yet he held onto Su Hui, essentially hogging a public restroom while locking another - it was sheerly despicable.

After Su Hui left, to ensure she understood he was not merely paying lip service, Yuan Cheng promptly dialed the phone number of the chief of Su Hui’s police station, specifically expressing his concern.

The other end was also in a bind. The promotion documents had already been approved by the city police headquarters. Moreover, the promotion was the intention of the headquarters, which required Yuan Cheng to call the headquarters directly.

"What? When did the headquarters start caring so much about Su Hui’s promotion?" Yuan Cheng was confused. Making a call to the police headquarters may be a little tricky, but Yuan Cheng thought he could handle it.

However, this time the person Yuan Cheng needed to speak to was in a meeting, and it was a very important one. He didn’t dare to interrupt, as doing so would have a negative impact. He could only wait to call later.

After working until dark, he started to tidy up his things to prepare to go home, and suddenly he remembered that he hadn’t managed to help Su Hui with her problem. He couldn’t go back on his word to Su Hui, or else he would lose all hopeful chances of getting her back.

Just at this moment, the door to Yuan Cheng’s office was opened, in walked an enchanting woman with a radiant smile. It was his fiancee, Liu Yao.

Seeing his future wife so unexpectedly, Cheng was caught off guard. But he forced a smile, "What are you doing here, you didn’t even tell me."

"I thought it would be nice to surprise you. Also, I wanted to see if you’ve been fooling around behind my back." Liu Yao chuckled as she tidied up Yuan Cheng’s clothes, behaving in a caring manner. "You’re so handsome and capable, who knows how many vixen at your workplace are aiming for you."

Upon hearing this, Yuan Cheng laughed, "Even if there are many vixens out there, they aren’t your match. You’re the only one in my mind."

Liu Yao put on the act of being satisfied after hearing this, laughed again and asked, "Really? You’re not just trying to sweet-talk me?"

"Of course. You don’t believe in yourself? You’ve met my female colleagues, none of them can hold a candle to you." Yuan Cheng spoke the truth, hoping to make his fiancée feel happier. Although Liu Yao was not as pretty as Su Hui, she was still beautiful, and more importantly, she had powerful connections. Marrying her would certainly not be a bad move.

Initially, Yuan Cheng resisted the idea of cutting off his years-long relationship with Su Hui in order to marry another woman. But as he gained more life experiences, his ambitions grew. He realized that a man must prioritize his career before personal feelings.

However, Yuan Cheng was starting to get a strange feeling. He thought Liu Yao’s sudden appearance was a bit too coincidental. She seemed to be smiling knowingly, "None of the women at your workplace can compare to me, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any outside. Your ex-girlfriend Su Hui came to see you today, didn’t she?"

On hearing this, Yuan Cheng’s heart skipped a beat. His limbs turned cold. He didn’t want to upset his well-connected fiancée. Moreover, he wondered how Liu Yao knew Su Hui had visited. Did she have informers at his workplace?

Liu Yao was intrigued by Yuan Cheng’s nervousness. "What’s the matter? Your ex-girlfriend isn’t still clinging on to you, is she? She wasn’t trying to get back together with you?"

Yuan Cheng quickly explained, "No, no. She just had a little problem. She didn’t want to be transferred and asked me to help her."

"So you agreed." Liu Yao became visibly irritated. "Listen to me, Yuan Cheng. I don’t care what your relationship with her was in the past, but it’s over now. I hope that my fiancé is devoted to me and me alone. No woman would tolerate having another woman in her man’s heart. Since it’s over, it should be over completely. Whatever trouble she’s in, she should solve it herself. Why should you help her? Is it because every time she’s in trouble, you will jump to help her like before? What would people say if they saw that? And where would that leave me?"

"Alright, alright, you’re right. I wasn’t considering things fully. I will listen to you, I won’t help her." It took a lot of persuading before Liu Yao finally believed Yuan Cheng.

Afterwards, Yuan Cheng wanted to take Liu Yao out for dinner, but Liu Yao said she had plans with an old classmate, so it would have to be postponed.

Yuan Cheng was naturally hoping Liu Yao would leave after calming down, fearing further dispute over the matter with Su Hui.

When Liu Yao left Yuan Cheng’s office and the building, she returned to her car where another woman was sitting. The woman, observing Liu Yao with interest, asked, "So, was everything taken care of?"

Liu Yao proudly replied, "Of course. Anything I take care of always goes according to plan."

The other woman agreed, "You did the right thing. We cannot let the old flame between Su Hui and Yuan Cheng be rekindled."

"Thanks to your timely information, my old classmate. Thanks a lot! My old classmate, " Liu Yao said and smiled at the magnificent woman in the passenger seat, Leng Le.

"No problem. That’s what old classmates are for. After all, we are not only old classmates but also good friends." Leng Le also smiled, secretly thinking, "Sorry, Su Hui. Mind your own business. You thought you could use Yuan Cheng to turn the tables? Keep dreaming. I’ll always be one step ahead of you."
