Chapter 239: Finally Hooked

Chapter 239: Chapter 239: Finally Hooked

Two days later, Lu Yi received a phone call claiming to be from a brokerage office. They stated they knew Lu Yi worked in the maritime industry, and just so happens there was a shipping business owner who needed Lu Yi’s help.

"Oh my God, we’ve been discovered," Lu Yi quickly informed Su Hui, who in turn immediately notified Zhuo Hang and urged him to quickly arrange an identity for Lu Yi.

This would be quite difficult. At most, Lu Yi was just a third-year university student and worked part-time jobs, he had never held a real job before. Even if he was to pretend to be an employee, the other party would surely ask what Lu Yi normally did for work. If Lu Yi replied awkwardly, he would arouse suspicion, or even get eliminated from consideration.

Opportunities like this are rare, and breaking into the Elite Club might just be a one-time chance. Just when everyone was stuck and had no idea where to find such a maritime worker, Gu Fan stepped in – it was finally time for him to make a contribution.

As it turns out, Gu Fan had a high school classmate named Lei Haichen who worked in maritime affairs. Although he was just a minor intern with limited career prospects, he yearned to make a name for himself.

Having found the right person, Su Hui and Zhuo Hang decided to quickly instruct Gu Fan to make contact, promising to help Lei Haichen establish numerous connections and relationships, leaving it up to him to seize the opportunity or not.

Upon hearing this, Gu Fan felt troubled. Wasn’t this asking Lei Haichen to act as a mole? This could be dangerous. If he entrapped his high school classmate, it would surely damage his reputation and he might be left out of future class reunions.

However, in the end, Gu Fan decided to call Lei Haichen. He called him over to his house under the pretext of catching up over drinks. When Lei Haichen arrived, they chatted casually, talking about high school memories, and accidentally brought up the topic of past crushes.

"You mean... she has a boyfriend now?" When Gu Fan heard that his high school crush was now taken, he couldn’t help but feel a sting of disappointment. He quietly reminisced about his schoolboy awkwardness when he was too shy to approach or speak up, and how he always got nervous and messed up in front of her, causing him to miss his chance.

After sighing over the past, Gu Fan finally got down to business, mentioning that the Elite Club was looking for individuals who could provide resources, and Lei Haichen was the kind of person they needed.

Lei Haichen was quite perplexed, "I’m only an intern, just like you I’m a university student still in school. If it weren’t for my dad’s connections, I wouldn’t even be able to intern so soon. How could I be considered elite?"

Gu Fan quickly reassured him, "Don’t worry, it’s all good. This Elite Club values people’s growth potential. Look at you, you have the appearance, the demeanor, the ability, plus a supportive father – there’s no reason you won’t succeed. You are a future elite." After saying these deceitful words, Gu Fan even gave Lei Haichen a thumbs up.

Still, Lei Haichen hesitated, "But why would he introduce me to an important business owner for no reason? Is he involved in smuggling or human trafficking?"

"Well, that might actually be possible," Gu Fan didn’t try to hide the truth, causing Lei Haichen to wrestle with his decision, thinking it may be better not to get involved.

Nevertheless, Gu Fan managed to persuade him by highlighting the benefits of joining the Elite Club, such as access to a vast network of individuals in various fields, like police officers who could help with traffic fines, or doctors and lawyers, etc. After all, networking and resource acquisition are key when entering society. And Lei Haichen wouldn’t necessarily be asked to do something illegal, it could be something within his capacity.

Lei Haichen was moved, but he wondered why Gu Fan hadn’t joined the Elite Club himself.

With a troubled expression, Gu Fan replied, "Well, there’s nothing I can do about it. I’m just a student who does part-time work in a restaurant. Other than snagging the lady boss, I haven’t made any other achievements. I don’t look anything like a future elite, why would they want me?"

On hearing this, Lei Haichen couldn’t help but applaud with an impressed expression, "Wow, you’ve even managed to impress the female boss. If you had been more courageous back in high school, you might not have missed out..."

"Missed out on who?" a cold snort startled Gu Fan. Turning around, he saw Leng Le standing at the doorway with a stern expression, and he knew he was in trouble.

"All right, that settles it, go back and prepare," Gu Fan hastily dismissed Lei Haichen. But when Lei Haichen saw Leng Le’s beauty, he couldn’t help being amazed. He initially thought Gu Fan was just boasting, not realizing it was true. He was determined to share this story in the class group chat.

With Lei Haichen finally gone, Gu Fan laughed awkwardly, "Sorry for the awkward scene, why did you show up without giving me a heads up?"

"I’m worried about your health. Are you feeling any better?" Leng Le gave Gu Fan a scrutinizing look after her comment, noticing that his complexion was much better than the day before and wondered if the effects of the chronic poison had been suppressed.

"Thanks for your concern, I feel much better," Gu Fan genuinely felt improved, even in high enough spirits to joke around, but he still felt somewhat weird.

Leng Le looked at him disapprovingly, "All right then, since you’re feeling better, let’s talk about the person you had a crush on in high school."

Gu Fan laughed it off, "Oh that, it was just silly high school infatuation when I didn’t know anything and hadn’t developed a mature sense of aesthetics. There’s really nothing nostalgic about it, in fact, I can’t even remember what she looks like now."

At that response, Leng Le appeared quite satisfied which allowed Gu Fan to breathe a sigh of relief. But he was beginning to feel dizzy, as if his head was heavier than his feet.

Seeing Gu Fan’s worsening complexion, Leng Le knew there was a problem, "What’s wrong? You don’t look good."

"Maybe I’m not completely recovered yet, I need a little rest." As soon as he finished speaking, Gu Fan felt as if his head was about to explode and nearly collapsed.

Leng Le quickly stabilized Gu Fan with her swift response. Her heart was chilled knowing that this meant Gu Fan wouldn’t have much time left.

"Sorry, I probably need some rest. I can’t entertain you anymore," Gu Fan said, struggling to get to his room upstairs, swaying unsteadily with each step, which raised fears that he might stumble and fall at any moment.

"What’s happening to me? Why do I feel so unwell?" Gu Fan managed to get to his room, panting and sweating profusely. Even those few steps seemed to have drained all of his energy.

"Oh, Gu Fan, don’t blame me. It’s just bad luck that you had to take that drink," considering that there is no longer a way to reverse the situation and that Gu Fan only has a few days left to live, Leng Le decided to be the girlfriend she’s supposed to be, as a sort of compensation for Gu Fan.
