Those Classmates who Suddenly Disappeared -
Chapter 206: Unexpected Phone Call
Chapter 206: Chapter 206: Unexpected Phone Call
In a district populated with residential houses, there were no restaurants or supermarkets, only one or two small convenience stores, and occasionally you could see delivery guys coming and going. The residents were quite varied, mostly migrant workers from all over the country. There was limited surveillance on the streets, making this an ideal hiding spot.
Based on the address they obtained, Gu Fan and his team had already arrived and were secretly monitoring a residential house, which they believed to be holding Du Jun captive.
Su Hui checked the map online. One side of the residential district bordering a river, two sides leading to the main road, and one side toward a small grove. If they were to rescue the hostage, their withdrawal should be on the main road side.
"Everyone, be aware that we currently do not know how many subordinates the other party has deployed here. With so many people coming and going, it would be hard for us to identify who their subordinates are, and as soon as we show up, they could easily recognize us." Su Hui spoke while she watched with binoculars from the car.
Gu Fan wore a hat, tilted low to shield his face, and had on a long wig and a beard. Pretending to be a passer-by, he made purchases from the shops while secretly observing.
"Listen, everyone, there are a few people fishing over there, frequently looking around. I bet they are our guys. And the guy smoking by the third streetlamp, he keeps wandering within a particular area." Gu Fan’s words caught everyone’s attention, and they all began to worry. This place seemed to be a real den of danger.
Now was not the time to act. The opponents’ heavy troops must be concentrated here, so everyone was waiting and watching over the exits that lead out of this residential district.
Lu Yi was a bit anxious, "If we don’t act soon, Du Jun could be moved. If they end up meeting Lin Xi at the rendezvous point, wouldn’t our efforts have been in vain?"
Indeed, Gu Fan had considered this point. Since they had roughly found the location where Du Jun was kidnapped, they needed to know whether Du Jun would be moved next.
Considering it was a hostage swap, the chances of Du Jun being taken away were high. They had to minimize this possibility, so Gu Fan came up with an idea: to have Lin Xi negotiate with their opponents.
Quickly, under Gu Fan’s guidance, Lin Xi made a request: she would be at the agreed-upon location at the set time, but there was no need to bring Du Jun there. As long as they let Lin Xi know via video call that Du Jun had been released, it would suffice.
Hearing this proposal, the opposition was overjoyed. The conditions were entirely to their advantage. What on earth was Lin thinking? Even Leng Le thought she was acting foolish.
Then, Leng Le agreed to it. Even though it seemed too good to turn down, something didn’t feel right.
As night fell, Lin Xi was already on the road, and Leng Le and Hai were also on their way with their people. Before they left, they urged those left behind to keep a close watch on Du Jun; it was them who would decide on his release.
When Gu Fan saw two vans pull out from the residential district, he knew it was time to act. As they had drawn off quite a lot of their manpower when they left, the people remaining here were few and not a threat.
They waited for almost half an hour and estimated the opponents’ main forces had gone far enough. Then Gu Fan and Su Hui drove slowly into the area. Seeing the two people still fishing by the riverside late at night, Gu Fan knew Du Jun was still here.
Su Hui glanced around. It was nine o’clock at night and many people had gone home; there weren’t many people on the street. So, there wouldn’t be any issues if they decided to strike. Su Hui exchanged a look with Gu Fan, and they both got out of the car.
The two men fishing had become somewhat complacent. They’d been on watch since daybreak and were physically and mentally exhausted. As they yawned, they suddenly felt a powerful blow from behind and promptly lost consciousness.
Gu Fan quickly searched them and found walkie-talkies. Just as they’d predicted earlier, these two were their lookouts.
"Mission accomplished, how are things on your end?" As soon as Gu Fan dialed Lu Yi’s number, he heard a grunt on the other side.
"A little hiccup, but we can handle it." Lu Yi replied, while he, Jie and Xu Haowen overpowered and restrained one of their opponents.
Qin Jia unceremoniously shoved a piece of cloth she’d picked up off the road into the man’s mouth, not caring whether he resisted.
With this, all the lookouts stationed by the opposition on the two roads leading to the main road from this residential district had been dealt with. Now, their only target was the house from which Gu Fan saw the vans depart during the day.
The reason they had to eliminate the lookouts first was because some commotion was unavoidable when they entered the house to rescue Du Jun. The alarm could have been raised and their main forces could have rushed back, making things troublesome.
"Time to strike swiftly, let’s rescue Du Jun then get out of here fast," said Gu Fan as he was the first to head toward the target house.
However, Gu Fan hadn’t expected that just at this moment, Leng Le was trying to locate him using a tracking device. The location startled her, "My God, how did Gu Fan end up there? How did he find out we’ve kidnapped Du Jun and stashed him here?"
"What, really?" Hai couldn’t believe it, immediately ordered his men to turn around. If Gu Fan and his group were able to rescue Du Jun, then Lin Xi wouldn’t obediently surrender.
By this time, Gu Fan had already learned from Du Changhui that the other party had ordered takeout again. So, he pulled out the prepared takeout outfit and pretended to be a deliveryman.
Su Hui went in from the backyard, while Gu Fan knocked on the front door and called out: "Hello, delivery is here."
"No way, that was fast, I’ll definitely give a good review." A burly man opened the door, probably around 1.9 meters tall, instantly dwarfing Gu Fan and putting him under pressure. Gu Fan wasn’t sure if he could win a fight against him.
"You ordered the takeout, right? Thank you for choosing us." Gu Fan pretended to be serious while getting the delivery box from his back, then looked around and sighed: "It’s my first day at work, and I’ve encountered such a hard-to-find place."
The other party was surprised: "Hard to find? But you got here so fast."
Gu Fan quickly explained: "Your area is easy to find, but picking out your particular house from the multitude of residential buildings was quite laborious. The GPS wasn’t much help, either."
"Maybe so." The other party didn’t think too much of it; they were hungry and just wanted hot food.
In reality, Gu Fan’s backpack was empty. He knew that his cover would be blown as soon as he opened it, so he pretended to struggle with the zipper.
After waiting for a while, the other party grew impatient. Why was the delivery guy who was so fast becoming so slow at unpacking the food?
Finally, Gu Fan opened his delivery box, and inside was just a bowl of mini dumplings. This upset the other party: "What? There’s only one bowl of mini dumplings in here? I didn’t order that. What’s going on? Explain."
"What’s there to explain? It’s my first day on the job, and I mixed up the orders. That’s pretty normal." Gu Fan bearing a resolute attitude, not accepting criticism, irritated the other guy even more: "What kind of business are you operating? I should file a complaint and give a bad review."
Gu Fan huffed dismissively: "Give whatever review you want. Feel free to report. I don’t care for my first day at work. If it wasn’t for the need to earn a living, do you think I’d want to serve people like you?"
"People like us, what’s wrong with us?" The other party of course understood Gu Fan’s implication; he sneered at those living in messy residential areas like this who are typically low-end workers.
Of course, Gu Fan didn’t really look down on them; rather, he wanted to provoke the other party with his words. As a result, Gu Fan succeeded, and the other party was furious: "What do you mean? Are you looking down on us?"
Gu Fan didn’t answer but continued to feign a disdainful look, which made the other party even more vexed. The bickering became more heated, and the other party’s companions came out of the house to investigate what was going on.
"Sorry, I forgot to bring your stuff. Feel free to file a complaint if you want to. It’s late, I gotta go." With that, Gu Fan turned to leave. His task was complete; now it was up to Su Hui to successfully rescue the hostage, Du Jun.
But the other party would not let him go so easily: "Stop right there. If you dare, repeat what you’ve just said."
"So what if I say it again? What can you do to me?" Gu Fan continued to act arrogantly and even flipped them off, thoroughly angering them and causing them to chase after him, which was exactly what Gu Fan wanted.
Just at this moment, the real deliveryman arrived. After glancing at the tense situation, he looked at the house number and hesitated a little. He then plucked up his courage to ask: "Um... is this... I’m here with the delivery."
"If you’re the deliveryman, then who on earth are you?" The other party was confused, and Gu Fan chuckled a few times: "Good question. Can’t you tell? I’m also a deliveryman, just in the initial stages of training. I made a fool of myself causing this whole mix-up. Don’t mind me."
Just then, the other party’s phone rang, and he immediately answered: "Hello, Sister Leng? What’s up?"
"Not good. Gu Fan is in your area. He’s likely there to rescue Du Jun. Be careful." Leng Le just finished speaking when it went silent on the other end. She had a bad feeling about this and her heart sank.
The other party looked at Gu Fan with a horrified gaze, seemingly having realized Gu Fan’s identity. This sudden revelation shocked Gu Fan. Also, he couldn’t help but wonder who the ’Sister Leng’ the other party just spoke to on the phone was?
Just then, there were sounds of a struggle from inside the house; Su Hui had successfully infiltrated and initiated her rescue mission.
