Chapter 97: Chapter 97 Parasitic relationship_1
After a few seconds of intense brightness, all fell silent.
Mu You opened his eyes; the brightness had disappeared, darkness descended once again, and on the ground, the array where blood and water intertwined, had vanished, leaving behind the birdcage standing in the middle of the arena.
Around the birdcage lay a few golden feathers, cast aside in a struggle. Inside the cage, the canary hung unnaturally, collapsed on the bottom, unmoving. Its pupils were rolled back in its head – it looked like it’d died.
"No way, did my summoning fail?"
Mu You was taken aback but hurried to check on the bird.
He opened the cage door, fetching the canary and cradled it in his palms, realizing with a cold shock that the bird was as stiff and cold as a corpse.
"I really failed?"
Mu You was desolate. He couldn’t understand it, he’d done everything right, so what went wrong? Where had he made a mistake...?
Just as he was unable to fathom the situation, suddenly, the bird’s talon twitched in his hand.
Mu You immediately looked down and saw the bird quickly reviving. Its icy, rigid body was softening and its rolled-back eyes focused once more. The bird blinked, flapped its wings, and flew out of his hands to roost atop its cage.
After inspecting its surroundings, the canary lowered its head and started preening its ruffled feathers.
"Uh... you are Vivian, right?" Mu You asked hesitantly.
"Of course."
A voice echoed in his mind, much similar to how he communicated with Cola.
The canary raised its head to look at him, fluttered her wings, and flew over to where the hexagram formation had been. She hopped around, examining the area before speaking dismissively,
"Just barely an excellent grade potion, and that was just because you cheated by using external assistance to forcefully increase the quality. It’s actually just a regular grade...Your abilities are even weaker than I imagined."
"Hey, now!"
Mu You was indignant to this criticism, "It was my first time making a potion, okay? Actually successfully making one should count for something, right?"
Though he hadn’t seen what a real Magic Potion Master was like, he assumed that creating a Spirit Summoning Potion within ten days without any tutor was commendable. Wasn’t this achievement enough to outdo 90% of the ordinary Magic Potion Masters?
Yet, all he got in return was criticism about his so-called ’mediocre capabilities,’ which, frankly, was hard for him to accept.
"You have a tool for time travel, you had the Fool’s Card, which means you had infinite opportunities to attempt this. Even with such advantages, you barely created an excellent grade potion by cheating. If that’s not mediocrity, then what is?" The canary sneered.
"..."
Mu You was left speechless. The canary was assessing his ability after excluding all those supplementary aids.
With that in mind, Mu You could not refute her. He had wasted more than 3,500 opportunities before making this potion. If all the attempts were converted into actual material cost, no Magic Potion Master could afford it. Most would probably give up before finally succeeding.
If that was the case, his abilities did seem pretty terrible...
"So... did I pass?"
Mu You asked tentatively. He’d surreptitiously checked his phone earlier to find the Calamity Witch’s test still marked as ’Incomplete’.
He was a bit apprehensive. What if she refused to acknowledge his work because he had cut corners?
"Barely."
The canary scanned the array on the ground, saying, "You might be mediocre, but you did put in some effort. If diligently working hard can make up for one’s lack of talent, you may yet have a chance."
Along with these words, the status of the task was immediately refreshed to ’Complete’ on his phone.
Mu You heaved a sigh of relief. At least, his efforts hadn’t been wasted.
"Someone is coming!"
The Canary suddenly spoke up, looking cautious.
Mu You was startled, not hearing anything amiss. He promptly dispatched his Battle Eagle to scout the nearby area. Sure enough, a team of rangers, equipped with flashlights, was rushing toward the mountain top.
"Damn, it must be the result of our ritual’s commotion, attracting the attention of the rangers. They probably thought there’s a wildfire on the mountain due to the red light earlier..."
Without thinking too much, Mu You hurriedly erased the tracks on the ground as best he could. After not being able to make out the array’s shape anymore, he hastily picked up the birdcage and left.
The Canary didn’t return to its cage, instead flew onto his shoulder, blending into invisibility with his cloak...
An hour later, Mu You returned to the pet shop, as usual, entering through the back window.
By that time, the Canary had already flown back to the hall, perching on the table to preen its feathers.
"Meow! Mu You? Where’ve you been, meow?"
Cola, hearing the noise upstairs, appeared at the staircase. Seeing Mu You down below, it came down, yawning.
But as Cola descended the stairs, it spotted the Canary, busy preening its feathers at the table.
No cage to protect it, no leg rings tethering it, and it’s back facing it...
The hunting instincts buried in the cat’s genes awakened instantly!
Cola fixed its eyes on the bird. Assuming a hunter’s crawl, it stealthily got closer to the table step by step. When it was about two meters away, it lunged forward with a swift leap, aiming for the bird on the table.
The next thing it knew.
"Smack!"
The Canary didn’t even look back; a mere flap of its wings sent Cola flying. It was smacked against the wall like a pancake and then fell to the ground, dizzy.
Cola was dumbfounded. It all happened so quickly that it didn’t understand what hit it. Shaking its head and returning to its senses, it was suddenly furious. It got beaten up by a bird? And in front of its human, nonetheless. It could not just stand by and take it!
So, it yowled and pounced on it again.
"Ah, wait a moment..." Mu You’s attempt to stop it was too late.
The results for Cola were even worse this time.
As it watched the pouncing cat, the Canary casually flapped its wings again. Suddenly a swarm of flesh-eating bees materialized around Cola. In the blink of an eye, Cola was stung all over its body.
Stung badly, Cola fell to the ground wailing. It kicked about trying to shake off the bees and hid behind Mu You. It stared at the bird in shock, "Carrion bee swarm? Impossible! Are you also a familiar?"
The Canary gave it a glance, not even bothering to answer, and continued to drink water from the bowl in the cage.
Humbled, Cola dared not provoke it again. Instead, it hid behind Mu You, gripping his trousers and looking at him accusingly, "Mu You, I misjudged you! You actually brought another familiar into our territory without my consent!"
Mu You looked at it speechlessly: "I suggest you behave. If you continue to act out and get beaten to death, I won’t interfere!"
After that, he went over to the Canary who was drinking water and asked curiously, "Can you still cast magic?"
"What’s so surprising about that. Can’t I, as a witch, use magic?" The Canary gave him a sidelong glance.
"No, what I mean is... you just switched to a new body, didn’t you... Where did you get the magical power from?" Mu You asked, looking puzzled.
He had personally selected this Canary; he could assure that it was just an ordinary bird from Earth. Even if Vivian’s mind was full of spells, she would still need a magic supply to cast them, right?
Vivian did not answer his question. Instead, she looked at Mu You, sizing him up.
"Could it be..."
Mu You paused, finally realizing. Could it be the magical power that was drawn out of him earlier?
