Chapter 721: Chapter 373 Shadow God’s Pawn_2

At this point, the person in the cylinder had already opened his eyes, and he was the one who made the sound earlier.

The Shadow Ghost spotted the figure appearing from afar, which stirred its rage even more, yet it didn’t impulsively rush forward.

Not because it was scared of the Shadow Ghosts in the distance, but because the girl was standing right behind it, it could not casually leave.

"I thought you would have run further away."

Mu You and Lin Xue also came up from behind at this point.

Mu You looked at the man encapsulated in the cylinder ahead. He was a bald, short, overweight middle-aged man. Despite his changed appearance, Mu You was certain that this man was the same person who had escaped from Sky City earlier; what he was seeing was just one of his ’skin’ forms.

"Victors write history and losers get written off, I lost this time and there’s no point in escaping now. But I didn’t expect that you actually have the power to suppress the Shadow God..." the man inside the device spoke to the three people in the distance.

Previously, Lin Xue twice rang the death knell, causing the absurdly high value of sin on him to explode, and the Shadow God bore most of the curse effects. But the Shadow God died before the sin value reached zero, leaving the residual curse power to act on him.

That overwhelming power of the curse managed to suppress even the Shadow God’s level, let alone ordinary people.

His inability to escape was because his level had been drastically reduced to the lowest rank, and all his characteristics had dropped to the lowest point. If he hadn’t swiftly slipped into the device which continuously eased his pain, he would have been continuously subdued by the curse until his life was expended, disappearing entirely.

"It’s you!"

Ye Rumeng seemed to have recognized something and abruptly pointed at the man in the device, shouting, "I recall now, the villain who kidnapped me, it was you! Quick, where is my sister?"

But the middle-aged man ignored her shouting and looked toward the ground where Mu You stood.

In his shadow, a Shadow Fur Ball carefully stuck its head out, covertly monitoring the surrounding environment.

"It seems the Shadow Fur Ball has chosen you to be the new host," the middle-aged man said.

"Yes." Mu You nodded.

"Then you should be careful. Once it grows up, it will have the power to backfire against the host. Be careful that you don’t end up with a fate like mine," the middle-aged man sneered.

"How could it backfire if you didn’t feed it? Are you not simply desiring the power of a god, which led to your backlash?" Mu You said.

Low-level Shadow Fur Balls certainly don’t have the ability to fight against their host. As they level up, not only does their power increase, but their intellect gradually improves too. Eventually, they develop self-consciousness and potentially begin to backfire. Therefore, the safest method is not to feed it any shadows, or only feed it a limited number of shadows, so it maintains a low level and can be used as a supportive pet.

"You are right. When I first obtained the Shadow Fur Ball over a thousand years ago, I also thought so. However, how many people in this world can resist nurturing a creature like the Shadow Fur Ball which has unlimited potential for growth?"

The middle-aged man gave a bitter smile, "Back then, I was an ordinary fisherman on the Cook Islands, devoid of any talents to cultivate magic. I was destined to depend on fishing for a livelihood and live on the edge of life every day at the very bottom of society. By a fortunate coincidence, I found the Shadow Fur Ball and became its host."

"When I realized that it was the shadow of a god, I was stunned and lived each day in fear, dreading the revival of the god’s consciousness. As a lowly man without the power to resist the gods."

"However, as time passed, I discovered that it didn’t display any indications of attacking me. Instead, it granted me various magical abilities. I thought of using its abilities to improve my life and began to try secretly stealing others’ shadows, carefully nurturing it, and gaining more power..."

"Six months later, I had become the wealthiest man in the entire Cook Islands. However, I was not satisfied and became fascinated with researching the power of the gods. I founded the Undead Association under the name of ’God’, gathering a multitude of followers and becoming more blatant in snatching other people’s shadows. The fact is, human greed is limitless; by the time I realized my wrongs, it was already too late."

"The grown Shadow Fur Ball gradually left my control, began actively devouring others’ shadows, growing on its own and at an escalating speed."

"With the rise in level of the Shadow Fur Ball, the consciousness of the Shadow God gradually awoke and began to resist my commands, attempting to take the initiative.+"

"I then finally felt afraid and realized the god’s scheme: This was the Shadow God’s way of resurrecting itself, and I was merely a pawn, a tool to assist its resurrection. I was terrified and enraged, for I needed a shadow I could excel and control, not to become a puppet of the shadow."

"To prevent it, I built this underground factory and sealed myself deep below ground. Usually, I only allowed people without shadows near me, making it difficult for the Shadow God to find shadows to devour nearby, trying to slow its growth rate."

"To threaten it, I planned to commit suicide which plunged it into slumber. Its power was still not strong enough at the time, so it had no choice but to comply and plunge into a prolonged sleep. Yet, what I didn’t expect was that, even during deep sleep, it was still able to paralyze other people’s shadows within the entire island range for its growth."
