Chapter 637: Chapter 344: The Most Treasured Thing_2
What truly shocked both of them was behind the throne, where a gigantic skeleton stood, reaching over twenty meters in height. The skeleton had an overall humanoid shape, the only different being two wing-like bones extending from its back.
Could the Grim Reaper... be a Titan?
They were both stunned by this revelation. From the scene’s appearance, the skeleton at the back was indeed the Grim Reaper’s remains. They had never expected the Grim Reaper’s true form to be so enormous.
At this moment, a deep voice echoed from the front, but it didn’t originate from the massive skeleton; it came from the cloak draped over the throne.
"Contractors who seek my power, congratulations to you both. Through numerous trials, you have found this place, where my legacy indeed lies..."
"All you need to do next is submerge your hands in this Blue Energy Sphere, and you will easily receive my power..."
This voice was blunt. It specified how to claim the inheritance right from its first appearance.
Unlike what they had imagined, the final procedure to inherit the legacy was extremely straightforward. They only needed to immerse their hands into the Energy Orb. And there seemed to be no restrictions; whoever seized it first would own it.
Without thinking, Red Sleeve and Lin Xue glanced at each other, both raising their weapons in alert.
If indeed there were no other obstacles in their path, then the only opponent each of them had was the other. Whoever managed to kill the other first would inherit the legacy.
However, just as tension was escalating between them, the voice sounded again.
"I am the Watcher, charged with punishing those guilty of sin and suppressing all forms of evil in the world. My successor is also bound to uphold the principles of the Watcher. Whether you are morally corrupt or have hidden intentions, you are unfit to hold the title of the Grim Reaper... If you wish to acquire my power and act as the Grim Reaper in the mortal realm, you must first sacrifice what you hold dearest. Only then will you be approved of the inheritance..."
"That which is most dear..."
This new declaration startled both of them.
Subconsciously, Red Sleeve touched her abdomen.
What she held dearest was, without a doubt, her unborn child.
Although the child hadn’t been born yet, Red Sleeve was already five months pregnant, and she had experienced what motherhood felt like.
And now, she had to forsake her own child to obtain this power...
The mere thought of it was enough to cause unbearable pain in Red Sleeve’s heart.
Still, she forced herself to stay calm, smacked her face slightly, reminding herself that now was not the time for hesitation. She already had sacrificed so much for this moment. Even if it was painful, she couldn’t falter!
Quickly making up her mind, she gathered her thoughts and caught a glimpse of Lin Xue, whose hands were trembling, her face pale as a ghost.
Upon watching Red Sleeve’s gaze, she turned and ran towards the exit, seemingly desiring to retreat.
However, from the moment they entered, the entrance had vanished, leaving only an insurmountable cold cliff wall.
Lin Xue frantically searched the cliff wall for a way out but couldn’t find anything.
Watching Lin Xue’s pitiful actions arronated a cold chuckle from Red Sleeve; "Without even this level of determination, why compete for the inheritance of the Grim Reaper?"
As she spoke, she advanced towards Lin Xue, brandishing her chain weapon.
"I already told you, but you insisted. Did you think coming here was some sort of picnic? That’s why you’re so privileged, you’ve never experienced hardship. Wouldn’t it be better for you to go home and be a princess?"
Despite her mockery, Lin Xue seemed oblivious, absorbed in her desperate search, but still finding nothing.
"In that case, allow me to help you find peace!"
With a cruel laugh, Red Sleeve rushed forward, whipping her chain downwards.
Hearing the swooshing sound of the incoming blow, Lin Xue instinctively raised her scythe to parry the attack.
When the scythe collided with the chain, a crisp sound echoed.
The two weapons should have been equal, but Lin Xue was in a state of extreme turmoil and her parry was rather feeble.
Launching a full-force attack, Red Sleeve knocked Lin Xue off balance. She was sent flying, crashing into the cliff wall, dropping her scythe.
Taking advantage of Lin Xue’s weaponless state, Red Sleeve saw an ideal opportunity to attack. She quickly turned in mid-air, her chain retracting to form a solid, roughly three-metre-long chain sword which she then lunged at Lin Xue.
By this point, Lin Xue had no chance to retaliate. She lay weaponless and could do nothing to evade the attack.
"Rest in peace!"
As the blade grew closer to Lin Xue’s heart, Red Sleeve’s smile widened, certain that she would be the victor today.
However, an intervention she couldn’t have expected saved Lin Xue. Just as the blade was about to pierce Lin Xue, a figure suddenly sprang forth from Lin Xue’s bag, blocking the attack.
"Pfft!"
In the ensuing instant, the blade plunged into a body, but not Lin Xue’s. Instead, it was deflected by this sudden figure, the sharp tip piercing through its chest.
"What on earth...?"
Once Red Sleeve saw what lay before her eyes, she was so shocked that she trembled and forgot to retract her chain.
The figure in front of her was a human, an elderly woman with delicate makeup, but the problem was, she was not alive— she was a corpse, and her face was painted with funeral makeup!
