Chapter 636: Chapter 344: The Most Precious Thing_1
At the foot of Skull Mountain, a white fog enshrouded everything, swirling and elusive, reducing visibility to less than ten meters.
Red Sleeve, dressed in a large red robe, sat on the monster statue in front of the cave entrance, hugging one knee, the other leg dangling, her toes swaying back and forth as if pushing a swing. In her hands, she fiddled idly with her hair, losing herself in her thoughts.
That is until the sound of footsteps echoed through the fog.
Red Sleeve immediately looked up, a hint of joy emerging around her lips. However, her brows soon knotted together.
The sound was unfamiliar; these were not footsteps she recognized.
Suddenly, a figure emerged through the fog.
The newcomer was a woman, slender and brandishing a scythe.
"Is it you?" Red Sleeve squinted at Lin Xue, who had appeared before her.
"Indeed, it’s me. Sorry to disappoint you," Lin Xue replied as she rapidly adjusted the remaining armor she wore.
"There’s no need for disappointment."
Red Sleeve shook her head, looking ahead, "On the contrary, your arrival is timely. It saves me from having to sacrifice my own blood and flesh."
"Huh?" Lin Xue looked puzzled.
"Look," Red Sleeve gestured.
Red Sleeve pointed her chin towards the enormous doors of the cave entrance. On each side of the doors, embedded in the mountain were carvings of a scythe and a manacle, spaced about ten meters apart.
"The usual rules apply. To open the door, two weapons must be collected. Each side requires blood from a Pactress’ lineage for activation. If Brother Nan had killed you, I would have been forced to supply blood to both sides myself."
Lin Xue stared at her quizzically, "You saw me coming and you’re not worried about what’s happening on the other side?"
"Ha, there’s nothing to worry about. The outcome will always be the same. Brother Nan can’t lose."
Red Sleeve shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly, hopped down from the stone sculpture, and casually walked towards the side with the manacle carving.
She then turned and gestured for Lin Xue to head to the other side.
Lin Xue moved to the carving of the scythe, and after a quick examination to confirm that Red Sleeve was not lying, she placed the scythe in the groove.
Across from her, Red Sleeve placed the manacle in its corresponding inset.
The two weapons fit perfectly into the impressions on the mountain wall.
The two women then looked at each other and each sliced open their palms, pressing their bleeding hands onto their respective weapons.
Blood was automatically drawn from the wound and flowed into the grooves. It stopped only when the entire depression was filled with crimson.
The two weapons brimmed with a bright, bloody radiance the moment they absorbed the blood.
Simultaneously, the large doors of the cave entrance swung open, accompanied by muffled rumblings.
Behind the arched entrance, the cave was pitch black, bottomless, with no light penetrating the darkness. It looked eerily like a black hole leading to another dimension.
Seeing the entrance open, the two women shared another glance before unanimously retrieving their weapons from the wall. They approached the opening simultaneously.
"Have you ever heard? Hundreds of years ago, there was only one Pactress lineage." Red Sleeve directed her gaze towards Lin Xue, "which means our ancestors could have been related by blood a few generations back."
"So?" Lin Xue looked at her, perplexed.
"So, considering that we may once have been kin, I won’t kill you. Leave your scythe here and go. I’ll ask Brother Nan to let you leave," Red Sleeve said.
Lin Xue paused. She had expected this moment to be more explosive and never anticipated Red Sleeve’s words.
"Thank you, but there’s no need..." Lin Xue shook her head.
Red Sleeve frowned at her, "Think it over. Once inside, if you do not secure the Grim Reaper’s legacy, you’ll never get out."
"I understand," Lin Xue nodded. This was one of the stipulations of the legacy mission. If one ventured into the ultimate zone without securing the legacy, they would be indefinitely trapped within the Tomb of the Grim Reaper.
"But... I too have a compelling reason to secure the legacy," Lin Xue muttered.
Red Sleeve scrutinised her, then dropped the subject, "This is your choice. Once inside, all bets are off."
"The same applies to me," Lin Xue responded, nodding in agreement.
Red Sleeve no longer lingered. She turned and without a second thought, plunged into the opening, disappearing into the darkness of the cave.
Lin Xue swiftly advanced to the entrance, but hesitated. The inexplicable unease crept into her heart once again.
However, thinking of Mu You and Vivian still embroiled in their life-or-death battles, she took a deep breath, stepped forward, and leaped into the cave.
After what felt like an endless period of dark free-falling, Lin Xue suddenly found herself in a bright space. She realised she was plummeting rapidly towards the ground. Hastily, she adjusted her position, rolled upon landing, and negated her forward momentum.
She looked up and found herself in an underground crypt.
The area appeared to be a dried-up underground riverbed. Judging from the erosion marks on the surrounding rock walls, this place was once submerged completely underwater for an extended period.
The riverbed was covered in scattered rocks and sand. Occasionally, she could see long rotted beast bones and fish bones strewn about, forming a skeletal path along the riverbed.
Red Sleeve was standing a short distance away from Lin Xue, her gaze fixated on something in the distance.
Lin Xue instinctively followed her line of sight and could not help but be taken aback.
At the end of the path, composed of bones, was a throne made of white skeletons.
An enormous figure cloaked in a wide cape was seated on the throne, but there was nothing inside the cloak. Instead, a vast blue energy barrier, like a liquid bubble, enveloped the cloak completely. Not only was it supporting the cloak, but it also made it seem as though an actual person was sitting on the Skeleton Throne.
