Chapter 167: Chapter 156 Genius Al_3
However, time remained tight.
From the moment the spell formed on the crystal to him casting the spell, the Snow Monster had already closed in. His eyes focused only on the entrance ahead, and he swung the tree trunk towards them, seemingly determined to sweep away any barrier in his way through sheer brute force.
It was too late...
Mu You was already contemplating whether he should teleport Lin Xue out first.
Yet what unfolded next took everyone by surprise. Facing the lumbering tree trunk, Lin Xue abruptly felt a pat on her shoulder, and a figure stepped forward from behind her, passing her by, and gracefully retrieved the scythe that slipped from her hand. Drawn between her and Mu You, he hoisted the scythe aloft.
"Thud!"
In the midst of the muffled roar, the tree trunk was decisively intercepted mid-air.
A petite silhouette was hovering half a meter off the ground, standing before the Snow Monster, with the scythe in its hands, holding off the enormous tree trunk.
The gust created by the collision whipped up a ring of snowflakes that scattered in all directions.
The three behind us were slightly taken aback.
"Grandma?"
Lin Xue called out the word in a daze, and looked incredulously at the figure blocking her, with its elegant dress and snow-white hair braided into an updo. Most importantly, the familiar profile.
Lin Xue knew she could not be mistaken. This was the same profile of her grandma that she saw countless times growing up, always trailing behind her.
The Snow Monster was also dumbfounded, completely unprepared for such a puny human to block its full-force attack.
Even Vivian tucked away in Mu You’s pocket, was taken aback as well, her pupils constricting. The familiar figure brandishing the scythe brought back a sense of deja vu.
"Al, you really did it..."
Her mind wandered back to that era once again.
The Secret Technique Association only had eleven members in its early days.
Until one day, when she brought back a child and told everyone else that she had found the final piece of the puzzle.
"This child is full of creativity, with an extraordinary talent for the soul realm. She will shock us all." This was what she told the other members at the time.
At first, no one paid particular attention because the child was too young, without any reputation to speak of, they could readily accept her as their granddaughter.
But they were soon won over by the child’s confidence.
"Genius Al reporting in."
"I, Genius Al, will henceforth work with you all to further amplify the power of secret techniques!"
These were Al’s first words upon joining the association. Young, confident, and vibrant, an unknown child, standing in front of their eleven infamous figures, with not an ounce of stage fright. It seemed as though she genuinely considered them her peers.
Vivian could still vividly remember the amused expressions on everyone else’s faces at that time.
Soon thereafter, they discovered the Source Crystal in the relics, and research on Secret Techniques formally got underway.
The next day, Al came to her with an astounding proposition: "Tutor Vivian, you command the power of life, whereas I command the power of souls. When soul meet life, would that not amount to - Resurrection of the Dead? Could we not utilize the powers they held in life?"
Everyone else scoffed at her outrageous idea; Vivian herself also did not take it seriously because resurrection of the dead belonged to the divine, a domain forever inaccessible to mere mortals.
Yet, she seemed to have really done so, even though it was a rather extreme method...
While Vivian wandered in her thoughts, the scene fell strangely silent.
Mu You was the first to snap back to reality. At the tip of his wand, the first spell was immediately cast. With all his might, a shockwave blasted the Snow Monster far away.
"Reaper’s Pact, support her!"
The voice of Vivian suddenly resonated in their brains.
By then, Lin Xue had also snapped out of her daze. Without the slightest hesitation, she hastily took the wand Mu You passed to her, and onto the ground, released the secret technique stored within the crystal.
An odd triangular formation swiftly materialized beneath their feet.
[Your life force is being drained by the Reaper’s Pact. Life force -1...]
Accompanied by this prompt in his mind, Mu You suddenly felt his magic power and natural energy within the crystal was being ceaselessly drawn away through the formation. They ascended into the air and then, guided by Lin Xue, were injected into the silhouette lingering mid-air.
The floating silhouette, with the energy from the two, momentarily reversed her aging. The wrinkles on her face and body disappeared, her skin became fair, and her stance became upright.
When she turned her head around again, the haggard old woman had transformed into a youthful and lovely girl. Albeit a little too young-looking, her features bore a resemblance to Lin Xue.
Yet, the girl wielded a scythe, her eyes fixated on them void of life, lacking the vitality characteristic of the living.
Lin Xue stared blankly at the young girl before her. Is this...Grandma in her youth?
At this point, the girl abruptly swung the scythe, and before they had time to react, the blade hastily brushed past Lin Xue, drawing out a fragment of her soul, which quickly disappeared into the girl’s body.
Suddenly struck with dizziness, Lin Xue swayed and slumped to the side, but Mu You managed to steady her.
"Little Snow?"
Lin Xue clutched her forehead and looked at the scene ahead, somewhat bewildered.
She felt as though she were observing from two perspectives. One was within her own body, looking at her grandma’s silhouette.
While the other seemed to be inside her grandma’s body. She felt as though she and her grandma had become one. With the scythe in hand and facing the Snow Monster that was getting back on its feet, the body autonomously lunged forward, beyond her control.
