Chapter 443: He is dying

Tears brimmed in Abrielle’s eyes, and she was feeling him fade in her arms. "Help, help, help. Anyone help?" She cried out desperately. Cedric wasn’t responding, and his breathing was getting raspy.

"Help!!!" She called out, and the door was pushed open abruptly. "What happened to him?" She heard Aurelius ask. He was passing by when he heard Abrielle calling.

"We were having an argument then he collapsed." She explained. Aurelius rushed over to inspect his condition. Then glanced at the servant at the door. "Get the healer immediately." He instructed the servant who bolted off.

Aurelius squatted at Abrielle’s side noticing Cedric’s bleeding wound. He sensed Cedric fading, but didn’t know it was this bad.

"Let’s get him on the bed. " He urged Abrielle who was completely devastated. Tears stained her face. Aurelius’s brow furrowed once he held Cedric; he was burning up badly.

Abrielle stumbled and couldn’t support Cedric’s weight. "I will handle it," Aurelius suggested. With some effort, he was able to move Cedric onto the bed. He then closed his eyes to mutter a healing spell.

"How long has he been injured?" Aurelius asked Abrielle. Abrielle stood by their side secretly saying a prayer. Her hands clutched her dress.

"Over two weeks now, before we left Draconia, we got into a fight, but the wounds refused to heal. We were referred to Heliosa because of the advanced medicine." Abrielle explained.

"I feel him fading, like he is slowly dying," Aurelius mentioned, Abrielle went pale. That could not be happening. The healer finally arrived from the palace. He used a rune to arrive quickly.

Immediately, the healer saw Cedric’s condition, and his face turned serious. In all 40 years of practice, he has never seen something like this. "Please, can I have the room, your highness?" The healer suggested.

Abrielle was hesitant to leave, "Let’s leave so he can work." Aurelius beckoned to her, pulling her out of the room. The door closed with the last image she saw being the healer approaching Cedric.

Time passed on, minutes turned into hours and she didn’t leave the door. She had never been this nervous before, her feet continued tapping the floor. Why were they taking so long?

The healer even called for assistance from the palace, and two apprentices came to aid him. Abrielle tried getting updates from them but there was nothing

She heard soft footsteps that stopped in front of her. "You should try eating something," Aurelius said, worried by her current state. Her eyes were stuck on the door refusing to look away

"I am not hungry." She replied. She didn’t even have the slightest appetite to eat. "Just try eating something." She urged her but she shook her head.

"I am fine. I don’t want him to die." She said, then tears burst out of her hands covering her face. "Why is he so stubborn?" She asked Aurelius. This was all her fault.

She felt Aurelius’ palm on her shoulder. "He doesn’t like others dictating his life. That’s just who he is." Aurelius explained to her. She knew that, but this wasn’t the time for him to be stubborn.

"Maybe if I leave, he will finally accept the fact that he has to accept the condition. I have to convince him one way or the other." They needed the emperor’s help, but she didn’t want to be selfish. She had no place to expect his loyalty. Even without the plot, the world was telling them the truth they refused to accept.

Aurelius felt his heart squeeze uncomfortably. He sat by her side on the padded bench opposite the door. "Doing that would only make his condition worse. I don’t think that will work and the reason he doesn’t want to accept the marriage isn’t that simple." ..

Abrielle glanced at Aurelius, her brows pulled together trying to understand what he meant. Aurelius sighed then continued.

"Cedric grew up with step-mothers and knows what it is like. If he marries my sister as the crown princess there is no assurance you will live long enough to even see the coronation. He doesn’t want you to be a target. The competition in the harem is scary, I lost my mother to it."

Abrielle understood what he meant. The new wife would see her as a threat. Even in Draconia, there is constant competition amongst the wives; several times they have tried to kill each other while keeping a smile. Why did he care so much about her? She wasn’t worth it.

The door creaked open drawing her attention. The healer stepped out with his apprentice, and Abrielle immediately rose to her feet, rushing to his side..

"How is he?" She asked. The healer’s face was calm, making it hard for her to read his expression.

"He is awake now but the danger isn’t over. He will face bigger relapses in future." The healer explained, Cedric’s condition was strange. Aside from the wound on his arm and stomach his body was technically healthy.

There wasn’t any poison or illness he could sense, yet Cedric was dying. They just couldn’t predict the cause.

"Can anything be done about his condition? " Aurelius asked. Abrielle was too mentally exhausted to even inquire. Was Cedric truly going to die?

"I can’t do anything within my capabilities. Normally, to treat a patient, you need to know the cause, but I can’t detect anything despite the patient being sick. We were only able to treat the symptoms to get him back but that won’t do much." The healer paused then turned towards Abrielle.

"I think your husband is cursed. That is the only possible reason. The only one possibly capable enough to help him is the emperor." Abrielle and Cedric already knew that. They suspect the sword Lucien used was cursed. The rest of the physician’s voice faded in her ears.

Abrielle walked past him into the room. Her feet moved towards the bed where Cedric was lying. Cedric sensed her presence and his eyes fluttered open. She didn’t say a word and sat by his side holding his hand.

It was cold, the fever had gone but he felt ice cold. "I am sorry, Abrielle, but I can’t. I hate that I have gotten this weak and worthless." Cedric’s voice was weak, and he closed his eyes with his hand holding onto hers.

"I understand why you would hate someone like me." She could sense the pain in his voice.
