Chapter 370: Epilogue
Chapter 370: Epilogue
Time flew by quicker than anybody thought it would. Before anyone knew it, baby Aire had finally reached her one-year birthday celebration. For the momentous occasion, Raine and Nathan busied themselves entertaining the various guests arriving at their home.
Most of them were just their families and some of their closest friends, but some were simply just a few of their trusted men and women, acting more like bodyguards and peacekeepers while also enjoying themselves. The party was held inside the Moon Clan Territory, specifically in the vast gardens of the Yue Mansion.
Raine had a wide smile on her face as she watched Nathan carry Aire in his arms, swaying her along with the lively music playing in the background. Her daughter’s laughter was so crisp and distinct, and it sounded like music to her ears even if it was the same voice that kept her awake in the night for days at a time.
"Ah, I can’t wait to give birth," Mia remarked as she stood beside Raine.
Hearing her friend, Raine turned to Mia and gently caressed her pregnant friend’s tummy. "It’s so big already," she chuckled. "You should start limiting what you eat. You might get gestational diabetes, you know."
"Hah, Boss... I didn’t expect that kind of talk coming from you," Mia snorted.
Raine laughed at her friend’s reaction. Mia was only six months into the pregnancy, but her tummy was growing bigger and bigger by the day. Her friend had also gained a lot by doing nothing except eat and sleep most of the time inside the control room with Wena. She had become rather lazy, a stark contrast to her usual work ethic.
"Hah, that’s it. Tomorrow, you should start walking with me and Aire in the morning," Raine teasingly scolded. "And this time, it’s an order!"
Mia could only shrug, and she was saved from giving out an answer to Raine’s ultimatum when Lyne and Boris, together with their baby boy, finally arrived together with the rest of Nathan’s family. Along with the two of them, their invitees coming from the Convel Society also filtered into the occasion.
"Lyne!" Raine happily greeted them as she quickly hugged and welcomed the new arrivals, assisting them onto their seats. She then turned back to her former right hand as she cooed at the baby boy in her friend’s arms. "Ooh, Cullen’s so cute..."
"He takes after his mother," Boris heartily stated, standing beside his wife with a proud air surrounding him.
"Which is a good thing," Mia teasingly joked at the man. "At least he’ll grow up along the ’pretty handsome’ route as opposed to the ’roguishly handsome’ that you’ve clearly gotten."
"Hey, Boris isn’t that bad," Lyne pouted. "He’s still the father of my son."
"I still said that he’s handsome, right?" Mia quickly defended herself against Lyne’s protests. "Just saying that once little Cullen here grows up, he at least won’t have to contend with having a ton of body hair."
"I second that, actually," Boris chuckled. "The pain of having that much hair on me can get irritating especially while growing up."
"I see that everybody’s getting acquainted again."
Before Raine could turn around, she felt an arm wrapping around her shoulder as Nathan pulled her in for a side hug. In his other arm, Aire sat happily with him, smiling and giggling as she enjoyed being rocked by her father.
"Nathan," Boris nodded in respect, old habits dying hard despite the former no longer being his king. His gaze then softened as he looked at the child in Nathan’s arms. "And the birthday girl herself. Happy birthday, Aire."
Nathan smiled. "Say thank you, dear."
Aire only cooed and giggled, to which Raine simply shrugged and scoffed in mirth. "That’s as good as it’s gonna get."
"She still hasn’t said her first words?" Lyne asked.
"She’s getting there," Raine quickly replied. "She’s picking things up fast, and it’s only a matter of time before it happens."
"And we’ll be sure to be there when it happens," Nathan smiled, bringing Aire up to his face and giving her a loving nuzzle. "Isn’t that right, dear?"
"Dada!"
The group almost froze, all of them turning to the birthday girl as she cooed and giggled. Her first words just came out, and her timing had been nothing but impeccable.
"Great job, Aire!" Raine cheered, a few tears prickling her eyes as she cooed.
"Well, that was excellent timing," Mia chuckled. "I’d almost say it was deliberate."
"I concur," Lyne smiled. "Clearly, she’s starting to take after her mother’s sense of humor."
Even as her friends ribbed her, Raine simply chuckled as she allowed herself to hover over her daughter for a bit. To think that Aire chose now to utter her first words was nothing short of amazing, and who knows what else she had in store for them all?
"I suppose we should kick off the festivities," Nathan suggested as she handed Aire over to Raine. "Clearly, our daughter’s starting to expect a bit more action."
"As she normally should be," Raine chuckled as she rocked her baby daughter in her arms. She then turned to her closest friends and asked, "Shall we get to our seats?"
With a collective nod, Raine along with her group went to their table with a smile on their faces. With Levi finally arriving to escort Mia after having been saddled with a bit of work, their table now had three families in its embrace. Of course, Nathan stood beside her, calling up everyone’s attention as he started off the celebration.
"If I may all have your attention please," he began. "Thank you all for coming to this joyous celebration. As you’ve all known, Aire’s finally reached her first birthday, and this all wouldn’t have been possible without all of your help."
Raine listened intently as her husband then began thanking everyone in attendance. From Boris and his former men back at Convel Society to the Moonlight Squad, as he thanked them all for their service in protecting you, the gratitude in Raine’s chest only swelled as their friends gave them all a smile that told her that they’d do it all again if needed.
"Now, let’s go ahead and greet our birthday girl."
At Nathan’s signal, Raine stood up, Aire proudly sitting happily in her arms as she smiled at the crowd.
With the loving family in center stage, the crowd quickly chanted out, "Happy birthday, Aire!!!"
As the celebrations went into full swing, Raine couldn’t help but feel pride and happiness with what she had achieved... at what she and Nathan had achieved. Even now as she caressed her still swollen stomach, the life growing inside her was yet another thing that she felt pride for. She couldn’t wait to see what was in store for her as soon as her second baby, Umbriel, came into their lives.
And after that, maybe then could she go back to her usual duties in the Moonlight Squad. She was itching to get back out in the field, and it was only because of her and Nathan’s... eagerness that she was once more out of commission.
There would come a time that she’ll be active again. That much, Raine swore... But for now, she’ll have to settle with the action and events that come with motherhood. Besides, the thrill of seeing her children grow up was more than capable of matching the blood-pumping action of being the Bloody-Eyed Hunter.
