Chapter 314: Dig up Some Dirt (2)
Mind walking through someone’s memories was something that Nathan had only done sparingly. Having done it on Raine, he at least knew the feeling of momentarily falling into oblivion before suddenly finding his feet in whatever the person’s mindscape was at the time.
"Well, this complicates things..."
Nathan clicked his tongue as he found himself in what looked like a molten hall of mirrors with every other corridor turning itself inside out. If he didn’t know any better, he would’ve complimented Danos for his impenetrable mind. Unfortunately, it was pretty clear that this current hellscape was caused by the Elder’s drunken state.
"Let’s see what I can do here..."
Navigating his way through the confusing hallways, Nathan could almost swear that he was starting to feel tipsy himself just from looking around Danos’s mind. There were bits and pieces of irrelevant memories through some of the mirrors he passed, but the very world itself seemed to shift with each step that he tried to make. In his hands, the Watch almost spun like crazy, also seemingly being affected by the current landscape that he found himself in.
"I have to hurry," Nathan found himself muttering. "I don’t think it’s safe to stay here for long."
Upping his efforts, the King checked every nook and cranny he could find, each mirror checked thoroughly for anything incriminating that he could witness. Unfortunately, his efforts have so far yielded nothing as he felt like he was walking around in circles.
Each mirror, he checked. Every hallway, he scanned. Unfortunately, the man’s mind was practically unreadable.
"Why is this so hard?" Nathan grumbled in annoyance. "Raine didn’t give me this much trouble when I did this to her."
Then again, Raine wasn’t also drunk out of her mind when he gleaned through her past. Hers had been peaceful, if tiring affair, one that he could easily do again if so needed.
This, however... This was making his head hurt.
Nathan clicked his tongue as he took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down as he thought things through. Surely, there was going to be something here that he could use. The mirrors showed memories, but only recent ones. Should he go deeper, perhaps he could find something incriminating?
Taking his own hypothesis to the test, Nathan braved the winding corridors of Danos’s mind, and sure enough, he found exactly what he was looking for and then some.
"This is... This is perfect..." Nathan breathed out, Danos’s sins now bare in front of him to see. "Gruesome... but perfect..."
Blackmail... extortion... The list went on and on as Nathan watched it all unfold. Danos’s cunning had indeed given him a lot of opportunities to scheme, and it showed with the many crimes that he had committed to work his way up the ladder. He had forged documents and evidence, even planned out an assassination or two somewhere along the line. And most of all...
"That’s..."
Nathan held his breath as he saw a memory of Danos as he was busy killing what looked to be another member of the Society. The Elder was younger in the memory, and the methods employed in the heinous act were so revolting that the King didn’t even have the heart to further commit it into memory.
"I’ve seen enough."
Shaking his head, Nathan walked back to where he first entered and meditated using the Watch. Closing his eyes, he felt himself being pulled back to reality. The next time he opened them, he was staring at Danos’s clouded eyes as the Elder drooled in clear unconsciousness.
"You’re back?"
Blinking, Nathan looked around, only to see that Davin had returned with Aspen in tow. Boris was still awkwardly holding onto the Elder’s head, but it was clear that the man was about to drop unconscious as well.
"I have," Nathan nodded at his nephew. "I have more than enough evidence to put this man in jail and even have him sentenced to death."
"Great!" Boris celebrated aloud. "Can I-"
"Not yet," Nathan quickly cut him off. "For now, return him to his room. I’m sure Aspen here has already prepped the witnesses?"
"I have, yes," Aspen promptly answered. "We’ll have to put Danos in his room still, just to make sure that all the stories match."
"And that’s the end of that then. He’ll get his dues during the trial," the King hummed in satisfaction. He then turned to Davin and Aspen. "You two, make sure you get these drunken men into their rooms in one piece."
"You got it, King," Davin scoffed, while Aspen simply nodded before the two promptly dragged the two alcohol-smelling men out of his office.
"In the meantime, I have to compile all of the acts I saw in Danos’s head," Nathan sighed as he sat down on his desk. "I probably have to stand as a witness as well..."
Groaning, Nathan went to work, recalling any and all crimes that he saw in the Elder’s head before putting them all into solid paper. Writing them all down in painstaking detail, he left nothing out to make sure that there was no chance that the man would even walk to jail in the first place. He even detailed the massacre that he witnessed in the man’s memories, cringing with every word that he wrote down about the heinous crime before he finally put his pen down.
"There..."
Looking at his handiwork, Nathan couldn’t help but smirk at what he was holding. These papers would be the key to giving Boris his freedom back. And it even had the added bonus of guaranteeing that Danos would end up dead by the trial was finally over. Surely, nobody would be able to question the validity of his claims, especially once they completed all the authentic pieces of evidence against him.
"You’ll pay your dues, Danos," Nathan grimly chuckled. "There’s no escaping for you now."
All that was left was for him to present Danos’s crimes in one swift blow. From there, it would be nothing but smooth sailing before he abdicated the throne.
