Chapter 310: A Fit of Rage and Hysteria
Back at the Convel Society, Nathan was already hard at work trying his best not to let the Society slip out of his grasp before he was ready to abdicate. Already, he had put out more fires than he could count, and yet a few more still managed to pop out and ruin his mood every once in a while. And of course, one of these many fires was the Emergency Meeting that the Elders had told him to come and attend.
"This better not be what I think it’s about..."
Taking a small breath, Nathan’s thought briefly went to Raine and whatever it was she was doing out there. Hopefully, she was having a far better time than he would have trying to placate these stubborn Elders. He could already see it: them trying to bicker and insist on him doing what was best for the Convel Society as a whole. And while he indeed wanted that to happen, he also still put Raine’s well-being at the top of his priority.
’Time to face the music,’ he inwardly thought.
Opening the door, Nathan exerted his aura out to everybody present as he strode forth. Immediately, any sort of casual banter inside the King’s Hall silenced themselves, his sheer presence keeping their mouths shut until he stood in front of his usual chair. Turning around, he quietly sat down, a perpetual scowl on his face as he stared at the Elders in front of him.
"Well? Let’s start this emergency meeting," Nathan declared.
His words seemed to permeate the room as silence reigned. Before long, however, one of the Elders began bickering again. Then they became two. Then the whole room exploded into chatter once more as the Elders seemed to be fighting amongst themselves.
"Enough!" Nathan bellowed out, forcing the room to fall into silence once more. "What is this meeting even about? Surely it isn’t just to force me to listen to you all bicker about nonsense."
As if on cue, one of the Elders spoke up, a scowl on the old man’s face as he began. "This Emergency Meeting is caused by your own actions, King Nathan! Your marriage to the Princess of the Moon Clan will cause nothing but instability to this group!"
Hearing the accusation, Nathan couldn’t help but sigh. So the old farts found out that he had married Raine just a few days ago. Not that he was even trying to hide it, but he had hoped that he would have a bit more time to stabilize the Society before they started asking questions.
"Indeed, I have," Nathan coolly responded. "But I fail to see why marrying Raine will cause instability to the Convel Society."
In truth, he knew that he was simply buying for time. Him marrying what was essentially the scion of an enemy faction was bound to raise more than enough eyebrows. Even back during the thick of the fighting, him being seen with Raine was more than enough to make them hate her guts. Granted, it was a justified reaction, but now wasn’t the time for petty hatred to rule against logic and reason. There was no way for peace to happen unless the infighting stopped, and him abdicating the throne was the best solution for it to happen.
"W-Why, isn’t it obvious?!" another Elder chimed in. "She’s the enemy! She shouldn’t even be your Queen in the first place! You have many potential Lunas waiting for you to marry them here!"
"And as I’ve said before, I’ll refuse any of them no matter how hard you try," Nathan firmly insisted. "I will have no other Queen except for Raine, and that is final."
At his declaration, another wave of uproars spread across the King’s Hall. Elders from all factions railed against his words, their pleas falling on deaf ears as he held steadfast by his decision.
"Silence!" he called out, forcing the Elders to quiet down as he spoke. "If this is all we have to discuss, then shall we adjourn so we can get on with our lives?"
"Not yet!" another Elder called out. "If you’re not going to divorce the Princess, then you must abdicate the throne!"
"Absolutely!" yet another Elder agreed. "Either you marry an actual Luna from within the Society, or you step down from being our King!"
Nathan blinked at the rather clever ultimatum that was being given to him. Never mind the fact that he was planning to abdicate anyway, the fact that they even thought about threatening him was both cute and annoying in a certain way.
"So you are all suggesting that I divorce my wife and begin the process of selecting a Luna, is that correct?" Nathan dubiously asked.
"That’s right!" the Elder that suggested the action nodded. "By doing so, you will affirm your dedication to leading the Convel Society, while also dealing a blow to the Moon Clan’s morale. Surely, with their Princess being spurned in such a public fashion, there will be-"
"Enough!"
Nathan’s voice boomed throughout the room, his anger at the suggestion palpable from the very air that they breathed. The King was almost panting, the image of seeing Raine being humiliated playing out in his mind making him even more furious than usual.
"There will be no more talk of antagonizing the Moon Clan!" he declared with an iron fist. "And there will be no more talks of me divorcing Raine in favor of selecting a new Queen. My marriage to her is final, and there will be nothing that could tell me otherwise!"
A tense silence blanketed the room, the Elders present looking at him as if he had just lost his head. Before they could even begin to start a riot, Nathan decided that he was no longer needed and promptly left the room, closing the door behind him just as the Elders erupted into a fit of rage and hysteria.
"As if I’m even planning on being here for long..."
With a scoff, Nathan went on to continue with his preparations. If they wanted him to abdicate, then they only had to wait for just a bit more. Once everything was ready, the Elders will get their wish and then some.
