Chapter 265: Fuel to their fire
Back at the Convel Society, Nathan was busy wrapping things up in a neat little bow for when he inevitably left the throne for that of the Moon Clan’s. There would be an inevitable commotion once that happens, of course, but that was a problem that his future successor just had to take care of. Not that he was one to leave messes behind for anyone that might follow him.
"As was planned, we’ll be proceeding with the signing of the peace treaty with the Moon Clan," Nathan declared in front of everyone present in the room. "With this, the war that has plagued the two groups will finally be over."
A muted response swept across the room. A few of the elders clapped, but the rest seemingly looked on at one another, as if gauging each other’s reactions and only then would they respond in kind.
Not bothering to pay attention to those below him, Nathan simply went ahead and signed the papers. Seeing as he was currently the King of both groups, he was the one that acted on behalf of the two groups. It would’ve been unethical if looked at from another point of view, but ethics did little if that was what it took to achieve lasting peace.
"And with that, the matter is settled," Nathan solemnly declared as he put down his pen, the treaties in front of him now signed and printed in the ink that bound them together. "As for the next order of business, we will go ahead with the retrial of Boris. As I recall, he was unrighteously ejected from his own position as an Alpha despite the lack of any evidence. As for the crime, however..."
The King let his words linger. In truth, he had forgotten what supposed crime Boris even did that had him lose his position. But even then, he knew that the man never did anything that might damage or jeopardize the Society in the first place. That, and reinstating him back to the position of Alpha meant that he’d have more allies in higher places once he truly left.
"What? Why even ask such a question?" Danos chimed up, clearly offended by the offer as he spoke. "Boris had done something unspeakable, a corruption charge at a magnitude of his should’ve been tantamount to him having been executed in the first place."
Nathan raised an eyebrow at the hostility on the display in front of him. "You’re awfully adamant about this, Danos. Do you have a vested interest in Boris not being reinstated?"
’’I’m just saying that managing to survive with a corruption charge over his head is already a miracle," Danos scoffed. "Being exiled was already a mercy in and of itself, and yet you want to give him a retrial?"
The King simply stated, "I intend on doing just that, Danos. Boris has proved time and again that he’s been an indispensable asset to the Convel Society. It is only fair of us that we give him the one thing that he’s been denied of all this time."
"What? Are you saying that Boris case had been a mistrial?" Danos incredulously asked.
"That’s exactly what I’m insinuating," Nathan stoically proclaimed. "With most of us here not even capable of remembering his supposed charges, it is only natural that we give our allies a boon. Even so, if it’s proven that he indeed isn’t guilty of his supposed crimes, then we’ll be able to add yet another ally into our ranks."
Nathan watched with a plain face as Danos visibly seethed from where he sat. With a smug smile, the King asked, "Are you scared about the potential outcome of this trial?"
"What?! Of course not!" the Elder proudly proclaimed. "The only thing that trial will prove is that Boris should’ve been executed instead of merely being exiled!"
"Very well then," Nathan nodded. "It’s settled then. Boris will have a retrial which will take place as soon as our courts are able."
And with that, his court all nodded in agreement to his terms. That was one problem out of the way, at least.
Onto the next one then...

After the meeting with the high ranking officers of Convel Society, Nathan also asked his confidants for a confidential meeting in their secret room.
"Let me get this straight, you want to declare a Battle for the Throne as soon as all of the minor problems inside the Society’s been taken care of?"
"That’s exactly what I’m planning to do, Aspen," Nathan quickly replied. "And I’m planning on you to succeed me. And I believed I’ve been vocal about it enough with you."
"W-What?! But isn’t that too soon?"
Nathan pinched the bridge of his nose as he watched his ever faithful aide almost panic at the bombshell he just dropped. Currently, they were inside the secret room along with Decan to finalize his plans on abdicating the Convel Society throne.
"Are you sure that’s wise?" Decan cautiously asked. "Our people probably wouldn’t take kindly at you seemingly abandoning us for the Clan that almost wiped us out."
"Why would it matter?" Nathan stoically rebutted. "So long as the leader that’s gonna replace me is competent, then it’ll be a net gain for everyone involved. Besides, I’m simply using the Convel Society’s laws and guiding procedures to make sure that everything will go smoothly."
"B-But... me as King? Are you sure about that?" Aspen weakly asked.
"You’re more than capable of replacing me," Nathan firmly declared. "You have a good heart, and you’ll care more about our people than I ever did during my time here as King. And even if anybody objects, the fact that you’ll succeed me through the proper means will make sure that any pretender to the throne will be met with a swift and proper response."
"Then you’ll just leave us for the Moon Clan afterwards," Decan sighed. "Like I said, this won’t end well. There are factions already forming that are planning to use the chaos to their advantage. You leaving would only add fuel to their fire."
Nathan scoffed. "Then let them. Even if I’m already the proper King of the Moon Clan, I’ll still be able to exert my influence in the Convel Society. They’ll be hard pressed to ever rock our position once we’re finally settled."
