Chapter 256: Out of My Way!
Chapter 256: Out of My Way!
Marcus didn’t know what was going on when Nathan said that his Raine was in danger. But what he did know was that he wasn’t going to let that monster even get an inch near his daughter.
"You there!" Marcus called out, pointing right at a few of his men by the sidelines. "Stop that bastard!"
His men blinked, but they soon moved anyway, ignoring their own fatigue in favor of obeying their king. Soon enough, Marcus smirked as he saw his opponent get busy trying to fend off a sizable group all on his own.
"Raine!" Nathan shouted, his hands still full with trying to defend himself from the men barring his way. "Marcus!"
"Hah! That’ll keep you busy!" Marcus taunted as he passed the bogged-down king. "If Raine needs any help, it’ll come from me alone!"
"You bastard!"
Letting off a scoff, Marcus ignored whatever drivel the werewolf might have and continued on running. He wasn’t going to let anything happen to his daughter now. Even if the warning came from a monster, it would still do him well to heed it.
"I’m coming, Raine," he muttered to himself.
**
Raine was not having the best of times defending herself. After tanking a few cheap shots that she could’ve avoided at her best, her already weakening body only became weaker and weaker. Blows that could’ve killed now only became bruising at best, and her deteriorating speed had left her wide open to attacks so slow that she could even shake her head before they even hit her.
She groaned in hindsight. Whatever Mia drugged her with, it was far more powerful than expected.
"Useless Angel blood..." Raine grumbled to herself as she stood back up from yet another downing blow. "Won’t fucking kick in right when I need it..."
"So this is what being a half-angel amounts to?" Sasha taunted, now hefting what seemed to be a rifle crusted with earth and rock. "And here I thought you’re the so-called Bloody Eyed Hunter."
Raine spat out a bit of blood from her mouth as she scoffed. "Well, you caught me in a bad time. I’m better than this, you know?"
"That, you are," Sasha smirked, shaking her head as she lorded over her surrounded enemy. "Why do you think I had this much help with me this time around, huh? They certainly aren’t here for show."
"Uggh!"
Raine grunted in pain as Sasha delivered another cheap shot right on her abdomen. It had been slow to come to her, but she was far too weakened to respond to it now.
"Hah! This is kind of fun," the werewolf gloated, laughing as Raine crumpled down to the ground. "And still, I don’t see how King Nathan chose you instead of someone better like me."
The downed bride could only smirk in satisfaction. At least she still had something to use against this bitch, "It’s because you’re a brute, while I’m at least dignified enough to-"
"Shut up!"
"Khh!"
Raine endured yet another blow to her stomach. This time, Sasha had kicked her while she was down. A part of her felt like she had been in that exact situation before, but her attention quickly went back to reality as she saw the werewolf point the rifle-like device right at her. She didn’t know what it was, but it was obvious that it wasn’t going to be pretty.
"See this? This is something I had an acquaintance dig up for me," Sasha chuckled. "You might think it’s just some gun, but this thing is a known angel killer. Something pretty ancient, from what I can gather."
Raine could only listen as her body refused to respond. A primal fear somehow bloomed from within her, and she was paralyzed from even trying to move.
Was this the end for her?
"Please die."
Pulling the trigger, a dull glow emanated from the weapon’s tip. Building up to form a single shot of energy, the bolt quickly left the muzzle with a flash, aimed solely at Raine’s chest as it streaked through the air.
"Raine!"
The sound of her name being called out by a familiar voice. The horrifying sizzle of meat being vaporized from right in front of her. Raine’s eyes widened as she saw that her father had somehow taken the blow for her.
"Father!"
Crawling to his side, Raine could only weep as Marcus’s bloody face gave her one last smile. A bloody hand caressed her cheek, the gaping hole in his chest unable to stop him from showing affection.
"Father..." Raine wept, her one hand trying to cover the fatal wound as if it would be any help. "You have to hold on. Y-You can survive this!"
Even as her words came out of her mouth, a part of her knew it was the end.
**
Being left to fend for himself, Nathan could only growl as he struggled not to utterly kill the fools barring his way to his mate.
"Get out of my way!" he shouted out, his arms raised up to block as he tried to reason with his assailants. "Your Princess is in danger right now!"
His words had some effect, but they still kept being annoying as they stopped Nathan from progressing. Even now, the King felt the impending danger that his mate was going through. Every hit and horror, even the courage that she was displaying was being filtered to him through their bond.
"Don’t make me kill you all," Nathan threatened. "This can all be avoided if-"
A bang. A blood-curdling scream echoed from the distance as Nathan turned his sights towards it. His heart dropped. He knew that voice, even if all memory of it had been wiped from his mind.
"Raine!"
With resolve renewed, Nathan stopped caring as he shoved through the blockade barring his way. There was no way that nothing insignificant happened right then and there. Marcus might be strong, but maybe the man had failed.
If so, then he had to pick up the slack. The man might be a vile monster, but at least the man took care of his daughter.
