Chapter 223: Disobedience to the king

As soon as Nathan firmly declared his intentions, he immediately telepathically instructed Decan to meet with him in their private quarters as soon as the meeting was over. Once that was done, he then gave one last nod to the peanut gallery, quickly leaving as soon as he turned his back to them.

Seeing their King move, Aspen and Boris quickly followed behind him, Davin not too far behind as they left the scene. Trailing Nathan, Aspen could only sigh at the hasty retreat. It truly seemed like the king made a last-minute decision instead of thinking things through.

Soon, the four of them finally arrived at the secret room. Turning to Davin, Nathan commanded, "Tell me everything you found out."

Hearing the order, Davin comfortably sat on the chair beside Nathan and reported, "Ava apparently fell in love with one of the princes of the Sun Clan at that time. Lark Tai, in particular. The two then eloped since both clans didn’t approve of their relationship," he shrugged.

"Time passed, and Ava became pregnant with twins while they lived from one secluded place to the other. They were always on the run from those who were pursuing them. And predictably, one of them was Marcus." Davin scoffed, "It was even said that the man was so hell-bent on finding Ava even in the deepest pit of hell. And sure enough, he did find her on that one indigenous and isolated island."

When silence followed, Nathan frowned. The King was waiting for more details. Like how did Ava die? Why did the twins get separated in the first place? Or how did Raine even end up with Marcus?

Sensing that his uncle was waiting for an answer, Davin shrugged. "That’s all I’ve got. The rest of the story is known by none other than Marcus, Ava, and Lark. Of course, the latter two were dead, so the rest of the story will go exactly as Marcus says it will go." He raised an eyebrow as he continued, "As for me, I’m still searching for a ’clairvoyant’ that could help uncover what really transpired in the past. That’s gonna be the only way for you to find out what really happened. We need someone who has a gift in clairvoyance, someone who could see into the past once they touch either Raine or her twin..."

At the end of the report, Nathan could only let out a sigh as he looked at Davin and murmured, "Thank you for this, Davin. Let’s try and find out more later. I feel like there will be a need for Raine to find out the truth in the coming days..."

Davin shook his head and pointed out, "You’re just doing this so you can somehow see if Marcus did something bad in the past, all so that you can show it to Raine and hope that it would make it turn her back on him." The vampire rolled her eyes in amusement. "Anyway, I can understand where you’re coming from, so I’ll help you out. I’ll try to find out more about this story thread so that your mate can stop adoring her father to the point of hating you once she finds out how you’re planning to kill the man. Right now. Behind her back, even. Just so you can keep her."

At Davin’s intentional punctuation, Nathan flashed a faint smile as he shook his head, "No need to remind me, Davin..."

"Well, I’m good with every plan as long as the main goal is to kill Marcus," The vampire snorted with a shrug. "Since I feel pity for you, I’ll consider helping you out on this as a small favor."

A few moments later, Decan finally entered the room. As such, Nathan immediately discussed his potential plan with the entire group. However...

"I’m not that confident in this plan," Boris couldn’t help but cut the King off from discussing further. "This is too risky."

"And for the first time, I actually agree with Boris," Aspen seconded with a sigh. "We’re not fully prepared for this. To me, it’s looking more like a suicide plan than something that can actually work."

"Well, so long as the target’s Marcus, then it’s good enough for me," Davin with a scoff commented.

With two people being apprehensive and one being neutral, Nathan looked to Decan for his reaction. Already he could tell the hesitation coming off the man’s face as he looked straight at him and responded.

"You know I trust you, but I still have my doubts," Decan cautiously worded out. "You’ll have to promise me that we can get the kids back safe and sound. Because if you don’t, I’ll never forgive you if something bad happens to them due to this reckless attack."

Hearing the man’s conditions, Nathan nodded in agreement, "Of course. I will bring back your daughter unscathed, Decan."

After which, the group continued with their discussion. Instructions were given out, and Nathan soon left the room while others made their preparations as to the orders given to them by their King. Although...

"I don’t feel good about this..." Boris shook his head as he whispered. "This is a bad idea..."

Aspen also let out a sigh, "I agree, but the King was firm in his decision..."

As the two were walking through the hallway, their heavy footsteps echoed across the empty walls. It was in between a bout of silence when Boris suddenly asked, "Can I at least spend a few minutes with Lyne?"

Aspen blinked at the question, a hint of a complaint evident in his tone as he murmured, "Ah... what should I do with the two of you..."

At the uncertainty coming off of the other man’s voice, Boris couldn’t help but furrow his brows as he countered. "Don’t tell me you’re not worried for Crissa? Do you think you can hide that from me, huh? How you’ve been eyeing Crissa for so long now?" he grunted as he looked around, making sure that no one had heard of them.

"Shut up, Boris, or so help me I will glue your mouth shut myself!" Aspen threateningly growled.

Boris brushed off the threat with a chuckle and said, "While you know that I may lack on a lot of other things, I still do have this high instinct on matters such as this. Why? I can even smell your-"

Aspen cut Boris off with a groan, the latter stopping as he ended up laughing hard at his friend’s expense.

"Fine! I’ll let you see Lyne so keep your mouth shut already!" Aspen growled.

Excited, Boris quickly left as he rushed towards Lyne’s room.

Left behind, Aspen only shook his head at his friend’s actions. It was true that he was so worried about Crissa that he started weighing out the King’s plan against the safer option of doing the exchange. If they just went with the latter, then retrieving Crissa and Cole unscathed had a higher chance of succeeding. But then, disobedience to the King was tantamount to betrayal, which was punishable by death... That was unless he would challenge the King for the Throne...

"Aspen."

"Mother?"

Aspen was taken out of his musings by the sudden feeling of his mother’s hand on his arms. He had been in such deep thought while he was walking that he had been startled at the sudden attention. when he suddenly felt his mother’s hand on his arm.

"We should talk..."

At his mother’s word, Aspen let her pull him into his room. He could only ask as he watched his mother make sure that they were alone. "What’s going on?"

Hearing him, Sanya let out a long sigh. She looked straight into Aspen’s eyes as she answered, "The Princess has a plan, but I don’t know whether or not to go along with it. I will discuss it with you according to her request. You can then discuss it with the rest before we can decide on how to proceed further." Sanya then discussed the details on the matter with her son, who listened keenly.

Midway through the explanation, Aspen burst out, "What?! You already gave her the potion to keep Nathan asleep?!"

Sanya shrugged her shoulders and said, "We can easily wake him up with the counter potion, son. Raine wanted us to decide after you guys talked to her while Nathan is asleep..." She morosely explained, "Whatever happens, Raine will honor whichever decision would be taken. So can you please hear her out first? We all know that Nathan’s judgment is compromised right now with an extreme bias towards not letting Raine go. Please... I really think you guys should hear the Princess out..."

Aspen looked distressed, but he hesitantly nodded as he murmured, "Nathan won’t forgive us for this if he ever finds out..."

"Will you talk to Raine first?" Sanya asked, keenly staring at her son. Aspen had a creased forehead... Conflicted as he murmured, "I will go mother, and discuss this with the rest first. It’s not only for me to decide..."
