Chapter 74: 74. Wu Qian? (Fifth watch, PK asking for support)
Shen Qinglan and Fu Hengyi had picked up the ring and were about to leave the jewelry store. The salesgirl behind the counter watched Shen Qinglan’s departing figure with a face full of envy. The ring appeared simple, but its price was far from low, and it was designed by the internationally renowned jewelry designer Evon.
Shen Qinglan naturally did not know about the gaze following her from behind; even if she had known, she would not have cared.
Before leaving the jewelry store, Shen Qinglan casually glanced in a certain direction, paused, and stopped walking.
"What’s wrong?" Fu Hengyi asked, puzzled.
Shen Qinglan did not answer him but stared in a direction where Wu Qian was browsing the counters with a young man. She was linking arms with the man, her face full of smiles, and the man occasionally turned his head to talk to her, their behavior intimate, clearly showing they were more than just acquaintances.
The two stopped in front of a counter, and after a while, the salesgirl took out an item from behind the counter. Judging by the man’s gestures in front of Wu Qian, it seemed to be a necklace. Wu Qian’s face was brimming with smiles, and she nodded at the man.
The man put the necklace on Wu Qian, who then tiptoed to kiss him on the lips. The man wrapped his arms around Wu Qian’s waist and deepened the kiss. The two of them actually kissed right there in public.
Shen Qinglan looked away, "Let’s go."
Fu Hengyi had also seen the scene but didn’t ask further questions, and they left the jewelry store together.
"Where are we heading next?" Shen Qinglan asked Fu Hengyi.
"To eat, to shop."
Shopping again—it was the same last time and now again. It was surprising that Fu Hengyi seemed to enjoy shopping.
Shen Qinglan glanced at Fu Hengyi but said nothing; she figured she might as well accompany him.
Indeed, after eating, Fu Hengyi led Shen Qinglan to a mall, the same one they had visited previously.
This time, they spent a long while in the mall and bought many things, mostly items for Shen Qinglan—clothes, shoes, bags, and even sunglasses. Seeing the bags in Fu Hengyi’s hands made Shen Qinglan wonder if their genders had swapped, given his eagerness to buy the entire mall.
"Let’s check out the men’s clothing store." Shen Qinglan pointed to a store ahead.
"I don’t need to buy; I’m a grown man, having too many clothes is just a waste. Today is mainly for shopping for you," Fu Hengyi shook his head.
He was intent on filling up the closet at home; he might not understand how many clothes a woman’s wardrobe could hold, but he was certain that Shen Qinglan’s wardrobe was definitely the least full.
Shen Qinglan said, "I’ve already bought plenty." She had practically bought clothes for a whole year today.
In the end, the two entered the men’s clothing store, and this time, Shen Qinglan selected clothes for Fu Hengyi.
Her hand trailed over rows of men’s clothes, finally resting on a dark-colored trench coat, as it was late October and nearing November—a perfect time for trench coats.
"Want to try it on?" Holding the trench coat in her hand, Shen Qinglan looked at Fu Hengyi.
Fu Hengyi stood up, took the coat, and entered the fitting room while Shen Qinglan continued browsing in the store, picking out a belt.
Before long, Fu Hengyi came out. Shen Qinglan looked over—white shirt paired with casual suit pants, covered by a dark trench coat. Different from his usual relaxed look, Fu Hengyi, dressed like this, resembled a successful tycoon who commanded respect in the business world.
"Doesn’t it look good?" Fu Hengyi frowned slightly.
"No, it looks great." Natural hanger; everything suited him. Walking out like this, who knows how many young women’s hearts he would captivate.
Fu Hengyi was satisfied; this was the outfit his wife had picked for him, so naturally, it had to look good.
He didn’t go back to change but instead wore it out of the store as the cashier rang them up.
As the couple left the men’s clothing store, they once again ran into Wu Qian, who was still with the same man as before, chatting and laughing, oblivious to Shen Qinglan.
Shen Qinglan noticed that the man was holding bags from several well-known women’s clothing brands.
"Do you know her?" Fu Hengyi had also recognized Wu Qian, having just seen her in the jewelry store.
"Roommates," Shen Qinglan said briefly, but Fu Hengyi could vaguely guess something from her indifferent tone.
Shen Qinglan had already learned from Yu Xiaoxuan about Wu Qian’s family situation; her family was from a remote rural area with a very backward economy. For Wu Qian to be able to study in Beijing, her family had exhausted all their resources, and even though they could only afford a part of her tuition, the rest came from her scholarship and the living expenses she earned from part-time jobs.
During the three years as roommates, aside from class and sleep time, Wu Qian was rarely seen; she was always busy with various part-time jobs and dressed very simply.
But from this semester, Shen Qinglan noticed that Wu Qian had changed, not only becoming more outgoing but also seemingly working fewer part-time jobs; the last time Wu Qian returned to the dorm, Shen had seen her applying makeup, wearing clothes she couldn’t afford.
Piecing together what Fang Tong had mentioned about Wu Qian often not returning to the dorm this semester, it seemed likely that it had something to do with this man.
Shen Qinglan wasn’t one to gossip and wasn’t curious about their relationship, choosing not to pry and simply going home with Fu Hengyi.
Dinner was prepared by Fu Hengyi. His culinary skills were so much better compared to Shen Qinglan’s that there was no comparison; Shen Qinglan’s cooking was barely edible, while Fu Hengyi’s could be called delicious.
"If your company ever fails, you could definitely open a restaurant. The business would be great," Shen Qinglan commented after finishing a piece of savory rib.
Fu Hengyi glanced at her sideways, "Should I thank my wife for planning out all my future prospects then?"
Shen Qinglan sipped her soup, speaking deliberately, "No need for that, you just need to handle cooking at home from now on."
She wasn’t interested in cooking; she had learned it purely to fill her stomach, and as long as the food wasn’t disgusting, it was fine.
Having lived with her for a while, Fu Hengyi was well aware of her little quirks.
While she could keep the home spotlessly clean, her approach to cooking was decidedly perfunctory.
"Let’s hire a maid to take care of your meals when I’m not home," Fu Hengyi suggested, not wanting her to suffer.
Shen Qinglan paused, "No need." She disliked having strangers at home. "I can cook for myself."
At most, it wouldn’t taste good, but it wouldn’t starve her.
"I’m really afraid that the next time I come back, I’ll find a malnourished and skinny wife."
Shen Qinglan: ...
Was her cooking really that bad? She had seen him enjoying it last time.
Unable to resist Fu Hengyi, Shen Qinglan ultimately agreed to hire a maid to cook, but only for lunch and dinner.
Knowing this was her final concession, Fu Hengyi didn’t push any further and agreed.
