Chapter 65: 65. Good performance, here’s your reward (including PK notice)
No evidence? Qinglan’s beautiful eyes flashed, and she had already calculated her next move.
Taking Yu Xiaoxuan, they went to the nearby snack street and ate their way from one end to the other. A trace of a smile finally appeared on Yu Xiaoxuan’s previously smileless face.
"Qinglan, you’re really nice," Yu Xiaoxuan said emotionally when they parted. She wanted to give Qinglan a hug, but remembering that Qinglan didn’t like physical contact, she gave up the idea.
Qinglan smiled lightly, "Go back, get some good sleep, remember to take your medicine, and don’t think about the competition for now. Maybe things will take a turn for the better."
Qinglan’s words were meaningful, and Yu Xiaoxuan took them as comfort. She smiled at Qinglan and went back to her dormitory.
After parting with Yu Xiaoxuan, Qinglan returned to the hospital. Unsure if Fu Hengyi had eaten, she bought something for him on the way. But right as she reached the doorstep of the ward, she heard Shen Xitong’s voice inside. Qinglan paused and did not enter.
Inside the ward, Shen Xitong stood in front of the bed, staring blankly at Fu Hengyi.
Since she had confessed her feelings and been rejected by Fu Hengyi, she hadn’t seen him again. If it wasn’t for overhearing a conversation between Shen Junyu and Old Sir Shen today at home, she wouldn’t have known that he had returned to Beijing and had been injured.
She asked Sister-in-law Song for the hospital’s information where Fu Hengyi was staying and hurried over without stopping.
"Hengyi, I heard you were hospitalized; I came to see how you are," Xitong said, gazing intently at Fu Hengyi, her eyes filled with deep affection.
Fu Hengyi appeared calm as if he didn’t see the affection in her eyes, "Thank you," he said, polite but distant.
Xitong’s smile stiffened for a moment, but quickly recovered, "I made you some soup; it’s very nourishing. Would you like some?" she said, reaching to open the thermos she was holding.
"No need to trouble yourself, I’ve already eaten."
Xitong’s hand paused, and she placed it down awkwardly, "Well, you can eat it when you’re hungry. I just made it today, it’s been simmering for hours. You should like it."
Fu Hengyi was silent.
He was holding a phone, texting Qinglan to ask when she would return.
Qinglan felt her phone vibrate and took it out to have a look.
[I’m still on the way; it will be about half an hour.] Qinglan replied.
Fu Hengyi looked indifferent, knowing it would be half an hour before Qinglan returned, his interest waned.
Fu Hengyi said nothing, and with Xitong also at a loss for words, an awkward atmosphere filled the ward.
Xitong seemed oblivious, her eyes unable to move from Fu Hengyi’s face. Even after nearly a month had passed, he still looked as handsome as ever, and not even the hospital gown could diminish his allure.
"If you have other things to attend to, you can go ahead," said Fu Hengyi. He was far from dead and could clearly feel that burning gaze on him.
"I’m free today; I came specifically to see you. Do you want some fruit? I can peel an apple for you," Xitong said, pretending not to understand the implication of his words to leave, and smiled as she spoke.
"My wife will be back soon, and I don’t want her to misunderstand our relationship, so please leave my room now."
Xitong was willing to feign ignorance, but Fu Hengyi wasn’t willing to play along with her, speaking directly.
Xitong’s face turned sour instantly, "Hengyi, do you care about her that much?"
Her expression was one of hurt as she looked at Fu Hengyi like a betrayer of love.
Fu Hengyi’s brow furrowed slightly, "Yes. Can you leave now?"
"Fu Hengyi, what’s so good about Qinglan that you treat her like this? Am I not better than her? What does she have besides a pretty face, that’s better than me?"
Xitong couldn’t maintain her ladylike demeanor. She usually had great endurance, but when it came to Fu Hengyi, all her restraint collapsed.
Fu Hengyi’s expression was indifferent. "Even in looks, you can’t compare to her."
Shen Qinglan stood outside the door, hearing Fu Hengyi’s words, a hint of a smile flickered in her eyes. She had not expected Fu Hengyi to have such a sharp tongue.
Shen Xitong felt like she had been dealt a heavy blow, stepping back slightly. She looked at Fu Hengyi with disbelief in her eyes,
"Fine, Fu Hengyi, you really are heartless!" Shen Xitong’s face was pale; her tears were on the brink of falling as she watched hatred surface in the depths of Fu Hengyi’s eyes. That was her hatred for him—for his heartlessness towards her, and also for Shen Qinglan’s act of snatching love away from her.
"Fu Hengyi, I will make sure you regret not choosing me today." Shen Xitong stormed out of the room, only to run into Shen Qinglan who was standing at the doorway. Shen Qinglan was as aloof as ever, her gaze towards Shen Xitong devoid of any emotion.
Shen Xitong glared at her venomously. "Shen Qinglan, don’t get too proud. What isn’t yours will never be yours."
Shen Qinglan just shrugged her shoulders, not even giving her a glance, and walked straight into the sickroom, only to be met with a pair of eyes that were not-quite smiling.
"Watched enough of the show?"
Shen Qinglan nodded solemnly, "More than enough, and it wasn’t bad—an epic prime-time melodrama."
Fu Hengyi looked at her helplessly, noticing the meal box in her hand. "Isn’t that for me? Why haven’t you given it to me yet?"
Shen Qinglan gave him a glance. "You’ve already had a beauty personally deliver food to you, haven’t you had enough?"
"Can I take that as you being jealous?" Fu Hengyi asked, his eyes twinkling with mirth.
Shen Qinglan choked on her words, "I like spicy food; I don’t like sour things." She handed the meal box over to Fu Hengyi.
"Just passing by, bought something for you."
Fu Hengyi took it, but instead of opening it, he asked, "Have you eaten?"
Shen Qinglan’s eyes flickered slightly; this wasn’t the first time Fu Hengyi had asked her if she had eaten. Every time she brought him food, his first question was always whether she had eaten herself.
"I’ve eaten already, with Xiao Xuan." This was specially brought for him.
Only then did Fu Hengyi start eating from the meal box.
Shen Qinglan sat on the side, silently watching him. He ate quickly yet gracefully.
"Want some soup?" Shen Qinglan’s gaze fell on the thermos that Shen Xitong had left behind.
Fu Hengyi leisurely tidied up the meal box and tossed it into the trash can. "I’m afraid I’ll have indigestion."
Shen Qinglan: ...
She wasn’t bothered by it, yet he was being fussy.
"It’s a waste to throw it out. I’ll take it to the nurses at the station," Shen Qinglan said and stood up, actually taking the thermos—which was reportedly made by Shen Xitong herself after hours of careful cooking of a nourishing health soup—to the nurse station.
"My dear, I performed so well today, don’t I deserve a reward?" Fu Hengyi watched Shen Qinglan as she returned, his voice soft.
Shen Qinglan paused, looking at Fu Hengyi. "You want a reward?"
Fu Hengyi nodded.
Without a word, Shen Qinglan slowly approached Fu Hengyi, sat down by his bed, then slowly leaned in close to him, the fragrant scent of a woman enveloping his senses. Fu Hengyi’s gaze deepened.
Their faces drew closer and closer, and just as Fu Hengyi was about to wrap his arm around Shen Qinglan’s waist, Shen Qinglan suddenly whispered something in his ear and then quickly pulled away.
"Good performance. Your reward."
