Chapter 68: A month

Chapter 68: A month

In the sterile confines of the doctor’s office, Abby and Remo sat anxiously, their hands tightly intertwined. The air was heavy with anticipation as they awaited the doctor’s revelation about Abby’s father.

Dr. Simmons entered, a grave expression etched on his face. "Abby, Remo," he began, his voice measured. "I’ve carefully reviewed your father’s test results, and I must say it’s quite perplexing. The initial diagnosis of cancer doesn’t align with the latest findings."

Abby’s eyes widened, a mixture of confusion and concern clouding her expression. "What do you mean, Doctor? Isn’t it cancer?"

Dr. Simmons sighed, his brow furrowing. "No, Abby. It’s not cancer. I don’t know how this misdiagnosis occurred, but your father is suffering from a highly unusual condition. It’s a deadly poison that mimics the symptoms of cancer, creating a false impression."

The words hung in the air, sinking into Abby’s mind like an anchor. She felt a surge of shock and disbelief, her world shifting on its axis. "A poison?" she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper. "But... why would someone poison my father?"

Dr. Simmons shook his head, equally puzzled. "I can’t answer that, Abby. We need to focus on treating him and identifying the toxin. It’s a rare case, and we’ll do everything we can to save him."

Remo tightened his grip on Abby’s hand, offering silent support. The room felt colder, and Abby struggled to process the revelation. "How is this possible?" she muttered, her mind racing through a whirlwind of emotions.

Abby felt a mixture of anger, fear, and disbelief. Her father, whom she thought was battling cancer, was actually a victim of deliberate poisoning.

Tears welled up in Abby’s eyes as the gravity of the situation sunk in. The doctor continued to discuss the treatment plan, but Abby’s mind was a tumultuous sea of shock and sorrow. The misdiagnosis had taken an emotional toll, and the revelation of intentional poisoning shattered the fragile hope she had been clinging to.

In that sterile room, Abby and Remo confronted a reality more sinister than cancer – a deliberate act of harm that thrust them into a maelstrom of uncertainty and fear for her father’s life.

Dr. Simmons hesitated, his eyes filled with sympathy as he delivered the devastating news. "Abby, I’m afraid the poison your father has been exposed to is highly lethal. We didn’t catch it early enough, and its effects are already too advanced. I wish I could offer better news, but the reality is grim."

Abby’s heart sank like a stone as she absorbed the doctor’s words. A cold dread settled in her chest, constricting her every breath. She turned to Remo, searching for solace in his eyes, but his expression mirrored her own anguish.

"What... what do you mean, Doctor?" Abby’s voice trembled, her hands shaking with fear. "Can’t you do anything to save him?"

Dr. Simmons shook his head solemnly. "I’m sorry, Abby. We can provide supportive treatments to alleviate his symptoms and prolong his life, but we can’t cure him. The poison has already wreaked havoc on his body, and he will only continue to deteriorate. The pain will become unbearable, and... I’m afraid there’s no way to sugarcoat it."

Abby felt as though the ground had been ripped out from beneath her feet. The room spun around her, and she struggled to comprehend the magnitude of the situation. Her father, her pillar of strength, was slipping away before her very eyes, and there was nothing she could do to stop it.

"How... how long does he have?" Abby’s voice wavered, her throat tight with unshed tears.

The doctor’s gaze softened, filled with empathy for the anguish etched across Abby’s face. "I can’t say for certain, Abby. Given the severity of his condition, I estimate he has about a month at maximum. I’m truly sorry."

A month. The word echoed in Abby’s mind like a death knell. A mere four weeks to cherish the time she had left with her father, to say the words left unsaid, to hold him close and tell him how much she loved him.

Tears streamed down Abby’s cheeks, her heart heavy with grief and despair. The reality of her father’s impending death crashed over her like a tidal wave, leaving her battered and broken in its wake.

In that moment, Abby felt as though her world had shattered into a million irreparable pieces. The future she had envisioned with her father was now nothing but a distant dream, cruelly snatched away by the merciless grip of a lethal poison. And as she grappled with the harsh reality of his prognosis.

Tears cascaded down Abby’s cheeks, unchecked and unrestrained, as the weight of the doctor’s words bore down on her. Her father, the anchor of her world, was slipping away, and the realization left her heartbroken. A torrent of fears and sorrows overwhelmed her, the impending loss echoing like a haunting refrain in her mind.

Remo reached out, attempting to pull her into a comforting embrace, but Abby recoiled, her grief turning into a raw, palpable anger. She pushed him away, stumbling back, her mind a tumultuous sea of emotions. The pain was too much, and she couldn’t bear to be consoled.

"I need to be alone," she choked out, her voice trembling with sorrow. Without a second glance, Abby fled from the doctor’s room, running down the sterile hospital corridor. Remo called after her, desperation in his voice, but she was already out of sight.

The hospital’s bustling corridors seemed to close in on her as Abby sprinted towards the exit. People and blurred faces passed by, oblivious to her anguish. She burst through the hospital doors into the crisp air, her breaths coming in ragged gasps.

Remo chased after her, his heart heavy with worry and despair. But as he emerged from the doctor’s office, a sea of people blocked his path, delaying him from reaching Abby in time. Panic surged through his veins as he fought against the tide of bodies, his voice lost amidst the cacophony of voices

"Abby, wait!" he called, his voice echoing through the busy entrance.

Meanwhile, Abby’s vision blurred with tears as she stumbled outside, the cold bite of the wind biting into her skin. She scanned the parking lot frantically, her heart pounding in her chest as she searched for an escape from the suffocating weight of her grief.

And then she saw him – their driver, waiting patiently in front of the hospital, a silent witness to the chaos unfolding around him. Without hesitation, Abby approached him with tear-streaked eyes, her voice trembling as she begged for the car keys.

"Give me the car key," she demanded, her voice trembling. The driver, sensing the urgency, handed her the key without a word. Abby fumbled with it, her hands shaking, as she rushed to the driver’s seat.

By the time Remo fought through the crowd and reached the hospital entrance, Abby was nowhere to be seen. He scanned the surroundings in frantic search, his worry deepening. Just as he spotted her, she had reached their parked car, the driver standing in front of the car.

Remo, catching up with her, saw her driving away just as he reached the car. He pounded on the window, calling her name, but she didn’t look back. The engine roared to life, and Abby sped away, leaving Remo standing in the hospital parking lot, helpless and alone.
