The Twisted Obsession -
Chapter 56: Adores You
Chapter 56: Adores You
Dr. Mason, a seasoned oncologist with years etched on his weary face, stood solemnly at Mr. Falcone’s hospital bed. Abby anxiously clutched her father’s hand, while Remo cast alternating gazes between them.
"In a measured tone," Dr. Mason addressed the trio, "Mr. Falcone, Abby, Remo... I’ve reviewed your father’s case thoroughly, and I want to discuss some findings with you."
Abby’s heart skipped a beat, a silent plea echoing in her eyes. Remo leaned in, mirroring the shared apprehension lingering in the room.
"Is everything alright, Doctor?" Abby’s voice trembled with a mix of fear and hope.
Dr. Mason paused, carefully choosing his words, "Since I was not the doctor in charge of your father’s case, I’ve gone through all the files and I have been closely monitoring your father’s condition, and the results of recent tests have led me to reconsider his diagnosis."
Mr. Falcone shifted uneasily in his hospital bed, his eyes darting between the doctor and his daughter.
"Does that mean...?" A glimmer of hope sparkled in Mr. Falcone’s eyes.
Dr. Mason nodded, "It appears that the initial diagnosis of cancer may not be accurate. However, further tests are necessary to confirm."
A wave of relief and uncertainty washed over Abby. She tentatively inquired, "What do you suspect it could be, Doctor?"
"There are several possibilities," Dr. Mason replied thoughtfully, "but without conclusive evidence, it’s too soon to speculate. I would like to proceed with additional tests, but unfortunately, some of the required resources are not readily available here."
Remo suggested, "Doctor, we’ve been looking into other options. I have spoken with a friend who is the head of the Faith research center not far from here. They might have the expertise and resources we need."
Dr. Mason’s expression softened, acknowledging Remo’s suggestion, "Good. I was going to suggest taking him there. A second opinion from specialists at a research center could provide valuable insights into your father’s condition."
Mr. Falcone, weak but grateful, gazed at his daughter, "Thank you, Abby. Remo. I trust your judgment."
Abby squeezed her father’s hand reassuringly, determination coursing through her veins.
"We’ll get through this together, Dad. We won’t stop until we find answers."
Dr. Mason nodded, a soft smile on his face seeing the affection between father and daughter. "I’ll get everything ready for the referral to the research center. Your dad’s in good hands."
Abby felt thankful as her heart soared. "Thank you so much doctor."
Dr. Mason nodded, touching her shoulder as he hurried away.
Abby turned to Remo, unable to hide her happiness.
"Remo, let’s pack Dad’s things. We need to be ready when they’re ready to move him," she said, her voice full of eagerness.
Remo agreed with a nod. Together, they gathered Dad’s stuff, apart from what they had bought for him he didn’t really have much things.
Memories of her dad’s laughter and love flickered in Abby’s mind. She would do anything to see her father laugh so carefree again. As they packed, Abby felt ready to face whatever came next, to fight for her dad’s health with all she had.
With the last item packed, Abby looked around. The room seemed different, lonely but she was glad her father was leaving this hellhole.
"I’m calling Tony, he went to make sure everything is ready at the research center." Remo said, and went outside to make the call.
As Abby watched Remo stride out of the room, her mind still swirling with thoughts, her father’s gentle voice broke through her stupor.
"You really love him, don’t you?" Mr. Falcone’s words hung in the air, piercing through Abby’s thoughts.
Abby’s heart skipped a beat, her father’s unexpected question catching her off guard. She glanced at him, surprised by the insight in his eyes.
"I can tell that boy adores you," Mr. Falcone continued, his voice filled with warmth and understanding. "You should see his eyes when he’s looking at you."
Abby’s breath caught in her throat. Her father’s words struck a chord deep within her. She knew Remo cared for her deeply, but love? That was a word she had never dared to entertain, especially in the context of their fake marriage.
A wave of confusion washed over Abby. How could her father see something she herself has not acknowledged? How could he perceive emotions that she had buried beneath layers of practicality and necessity?
But as she looked into her father’s eyes, she saw only love and concern reflected back at her. At that moment, Abby realized that her father saw beyond the facade she had carefully constructed. He saw the truth, even when she couldn’t bear to acknowledge it herself.
For a brief moment, Abby’s heart yearned to believe her father’s words, to allow herself to feel the depth of emotion that had blossomed between her and Remo. But reality crashed down on her like a tidal wave, reminding her of the complexities of their situation.
Her marriage to Remo was a business arrangement, a carefully crafted alliance forged out of necessity. Love had no place in their arrangement, no room to flourish amidst the web of deceit they had spun.
Yet, as Abby looked at her father, she couldn’t bring herself to shatter his illusion. She couldn’t bear to reveal the truth behind their facade, the truth that would only bring him pain.
So, with a heavy heart and a forced smile, Abby nodded in agreement, allowing her father’s words to linger in the air, even as the weight of their deception threatened to crush her spirit.
As Abby wrestled with her emotions, the sound of the door opening drew her attention back to the present. Remo stepped back into the room, his expression a mix of determination and concern.
Abby’s father greeted him with a warm smile, unaware of the turmoil brewing beneath the surface. "Everything set, Remo?"
Remo nodded, his gaze shifting to Abby, searching her eyes for any sign of distress. "Yeah, Tony confirmed that everything’s ready at the research center. They’re expecting us."
Abby forced a smile, her heart heavy with the weight of their secret. "That’s good news, Remo. Thank you for taking care of everything."
Remo returned her smile, his eyes filled with a warmth that both comforted and unsettled her. "Anything for you, Abby. We’ll get through this together."
Abby’s father observed the exchange, a knowing glint in his eyes. "You two make a great couple , you know that?"
Abby’s heart clenched at her father’s words, the weight of their deception bearing down on her with renewed force. She longed to tell him the truth, to unburden herself of the lies that threatened to consume her.
But as she looked into her father’s eyes, she saw only love and trust shining back at her. She couldn’t bring herself to betray him, not when he needed hope and reassurance more than ever.
So, with a heavy heart and a silent vow to protect her father at all costs, Abby nodded, her resolve hardening with each passing moment.
"Yeah." Remo said, pulling her closer and planting a kiss on her head.
As Remo’s lips touched Abby’s forehead, a complex mix of emotions surged within her. She appreciated his support, but the weight of their facade intensified. In that tender moment, with her father’s hopeful gaze upon them, Abby couldn’t help but wonder how much longer they could keep up the charade.
