Chapter 53: Meeting father-in law

"He makes you happy right?"

A deep blush tainted Abby’s cheeks. "Y-yes."

Her father chuckled, "I guess you really love this guy huh?"

Abby’s eyes widened in surprise, caught off guard by her father’s straightforward question. She fumbled for words, a mix of emotions swirling within her. Her mind raced, grappling with the realization that her father was probing into the depths of her feelings for Remo.

"I... I like him a lot, Dad. He’s been my friend through everything," Abby admitted, her gaze shifting away for a moment. The truth lingered on the tip of her tongue, a truth she hadn’t fully acknowledged to herself.

Her father’s eyes twinkled with amusement, a knowing smile playing on his lips. "Liking him is one thing, Abby. But do you love him?"

Abby hesitated, her heart fluttering in her chest. The question echoed in the quiet hospital room, prompting her to confront her own feelings. She glanced at the door knowing he was standing behind it. She hopes he couldn’t hear the conversation.

A soft smile graced her father’s face as he observed her internal struggle. "It’s okay, sweetheart. Love is a complicated thing. Take your time to figure it out."

Abby nodded, "Al-right. He’s here. Do you want to meet him?"

Her father’s eyes lit up with a mixture of curiosity and warmth at the prospect of meeting the man who had become a significant part of Abby’s life. "Of course, I’d love to meet him. Don’t keep him waiting, sweetheart."

Abby rose from her seat, a nervous energy coursing through her veins as she opened the door to reveal Remo standing just outside. His gaze met hers, and she offered a subtle nod, silently signaling him to enter.

"Come inside, I want to introduce you to my dad."

Remo stepped into the room, his eyes meeting Abby’s father with a respectful yet warm acknowledgment.

"Dad, this is Remo Quinn, my husband. Remo meet my dad, Charles Falcone." Abby introduced them, a slight quiver in her voice betraying her anxiety.

Remo extended his hand to Abby’s father, a genuine smile on his face. "It’s an honor to meet you, sir. Abby has told me so much about you."

Abby’s father studied Remo with a keen eye, a silent exchange passing between the two men. Remo’s calm demeanor seemed to resonate with Abby’s father, a subtle reassurance that Abby had chosen someone trustworthy.

"I appreciate the support you’ve given my daughter, Remo," Abby’s father said, his voice carrying a blend of gratitude and sincerity.

Remo nodded, "It’s been my privilege. Abby means everything to me, and I’m committed to being there for her."

Mr. Falcone nodded satisfied with his answer. "Good."

He turned to Abby, his lips curled into a smile. "So how did you two meet?"

Abby exchanged a quick glance with Remo, a silent communication passing between them as they navigated the delicate terrain of their fabricated love story. She cleared her throat, summoning the memories of their carefully constructed narrative.

"We met through mutual friend," Abby began, her voice steady despite the subtle tremor of nerves. "At a charity event downtown. It was... unexpected, but wonderful."

Remo nodded in agreement, his expression mirroring Abby’s careful composure. "Yes, it was one of those chance encounters that changed everything. Abby’s warmth and kindness drew me in from the moment we met."

Her father’s eyes sparkled with interest, his curiosity piqued by the tale of their serendipitous meeting. "Ah, the magic of unexpected connections. It sounds like fate brought you together."

Abby’s heart fluttered with relief as her father’s words echoed her own sentiments, a testament to the intricate web of lies they had woven to protect their secret. She exchanged a fleeting glance with Remo, a silent acknowledgment of their shared commitment to maintain the facade of their sham marriage.

"Yes, Dad," Abby replied, her voice tinged with a hint of wistfulness. "It feels like fate indeed."

Her father’s smile widened, a flicker of pride dancing in his eyes as he regarded the couple before him. "Well, fate works in mysterious ways. I’m just glad you found each other."

Abby’s chest swelled with a mixture of guilt and gratitude, her heart heavy with the weight of their deception. She offered a tight-lipped smile, masking the turmoil roiling beneath the surface as she played her part in the charade.

"Thank you, Dad," she murmured, her voice laced with unspoken secrets. "We’re grateful for your blessing."

Abby engaged in a conversation with her father since he was curious about what she had been up to. She spent the day with him with Tony bringing them food.

She was so happy to spend the day with her father. Even though he was pretending to be strong, she could see through his act.

As the conversation ebbed and flowed and night drew closer, Abby noticed her father’s eyelids drooping, weighed down by the exhaustion that seemed to seep into his very bones. Concern flickered across her features as she watched him struggle to stay awake, his frail form slumping slightly in the hospital bed.

"Dad, are you feeling okay?" Abby asked, her voice laced with worry as she reached out to gently shake his shoulder.

Her father stirred, his eyes fluttering open with a weary sigh. "I’m alright, sweetheart. Just a bit tired, that’s all."

Remo offered a sympathetic smile, his gaze reflecting genuine concern for Abby’s father. "You need to rest, Mr. Falcone. We can catch up later."

Abby nodded in agreement, her heart heavy with the weight of her father’s weariness. "Yes, Dad. You should get some rest. We will come back tomorrow."

Her father managed a weak smile, his features softened by the warmth of their words. "Thank you, both. I appreciate it."

With a gentle reassurance, Abby tucked the blanket around her father, her touch tender with the love and care.

With a soft exhale, Abby settled back into her chair, her fingers intertwined with Remo’s as they kept vigil by her father’s side.

She didn’t want to leave him alone.

Remo gently suggested, "Abby, maybe we should head home now." He could sense her reluctance, but they had been here the whole day and she looked tired.

Abby hesitated, her concern for her father evident. "I can’t leave him alone, Remo. What if he needs something?" She gripped his hand tighter, torn between her father’s well-being and the comfort of their home.

Remo squeezed Abby’s hand reassuringly. "Abby, I promise I’ll make sure your dad gets the best care. We can return early tomorrow morning to be with him. He won’t be alone, and you need some rest too." His words carried a sense of comfort, trying to ease her worries about leaving her father.

Abby nodded reluctantly, feeling the weight of exhaustion settling in. She trusted Remo’s assurance and knew he would take care of her father.

With a heavy heart, she leaned over, placing a gentle kiss on her father’s forehead before whispering, "We’ll be back soon, Dad."

Remo stood by her side, offering support as they made their way out of the hospital room, leaving behind the soft hum of medical equipment and the comfort of her father’s presence for the night.
