Chapter 238: A spy

Abby walked through the familiar, richly adorned hallway of their home, her steps echoing slightly in the quiet. She walked to the bedroom but Remo wasn’t there. Putting the shopping bag down she made her way to his office.

The muted sounds of conversation filtered through the half-open door of Remo’s study. Curiosity piqued, she pushed the door fully open and found Remo deep in discussion with a striking blonde woman sitting across from him.

"Who is this?" Abby asked, her voice a mix of confusion and intrigue.

At her entrance, Remo looked up, a bright smile spreading across his face. He stood and walked toward her with the ease of a man comfortable in his own domain. Closing the distance, he pulled her into his arms and pressed a kiss on her lips, his affection dispelling some of her initial surprise.

"I missed you," he whined softly, his voice carrying a playful note.

"Me too," Abby smiled back, warmth flooding her despite the lingering questions. As they pulled away, her gaze shifted back to the blonde woman, who watched them with an amused, knowing smile

Remo turned, gesturing towards the woman. "Meet Ella. Our new spy. She’s going to work for your uncle." He paused, ensuring Abby grasped the significance. "Ella is good at numbers and seduction," he added, a hint of respect coloring his tone.

Ella stepped forward, extending her hand with a confidence that Abby couldn’t help but admire. "Pleased to meet you, Abby. I’ve heard a lot about you," Ella said, her voice smooth and reassuring.

Abby took her hand, her mind whirling with questions and possibilities. "How did you two meet?" she inquired, her eyes flicking between Remo and Ella.

Remo answered, "I found her through an old contact. Ella has a background in finance and... a very particular set of skills that we need." He looked at Ella with an approving nod.

Abby studied Ella, taking in her poised stance and calculating eyes. She was striking, with an air of confidence that suggested she was no stranger to dangerous games.

Ella’s smile didn’t waver. "I’ve been in similar lines of work before. When Remo explained your situation, I knew I could help. I have a knack for blending in and uncovering secrets, especially where financial discrepancies are concerned."

Remo nodded, walking over to his desk to retrieve a file. "Ella has already devised a plan to get close to your uncle. She’ll start in the accounting department. With her skills, we’ll have the inside information we need to bring him down."

Abby listened, a mix of admiration and skepticism threading through her thoughts. She knew the risks of bringing someone new into their tight-knit circle, especially for a task as critical as infiltrating her uncle’s empire.

"Ella, what’s your first move?" Abby asked, crossing her arms as she leaned against the doorframe.

"I’m starting tomorrow," Ella replied, her tone business-like. "I’ll audit their recent contracts, look for any anomalies or channels that money could be slipping through. Your uncle’s company has grown rapidly; there’s bound to be a paper trail that he hasn’t covered up."

Remo handed Ella the file. "We have everything set up for your cover. There’s no room for errors."

Abby nodded, her mind easing slightly. "Alright, Ella, welcome to the team. Just remember, we play it safe. We can’t afford to tip him off."

Ella gave a sharp nod. "Understood."

After Ella left, the atmosphere in the study shifted. The documents and plans lay scattered across the desk, a testament to the stakes at hand, yet for a moment, they seemed to fade into the background.

Remo watched Ella’s retreating figure until she disappeared around the corner. Then, he turned back to Abby, a softness replacing the earlier intensity in his eyes. He reached out for her, his hands finding hers as he gently pulled her towards him.

"Come here," he murmured, his voice low and inviting.

Abby allowed herself to be drawn closer, a small smile playing on her lips as she moved to sit with Remo. With a graceful ease, he guided her onto his lap, wrapping his arms around her waist securely. The tension from the meeting seemed to melt away, replaced by a comforting warmth as they found solace in each other’s presence.

"You did great today," Remo whispered, pressing a kiss into her hair. "I know it’s not easy, dealing with all this."

Abby nestled closer, her head resting against his shoulder. The familiar scent of him—woodsy cologne mixed with a hint of coffee—made her feel safe and cherished. "With you here, it feels a lot more manageable," she admitted, allowing herself to relax fully against him.

Remo chuckled softly, his chest rumbling beneath her cheek. He tilted her chin up, his fingers gentle on her skin, and looked into her eyes with a tenderness that made her heart flutter. "We’re in this together, Abby. Whatever comes, we face it as a team."

Abby’s eyes locked with his, the depth of her feelings mirrored in his gaze. She leaned in, closing the small distance between them, and their lips met in a kiss that was both a promise and a relief—a moment of peace amid the chaos. As they pulled away, she couldn’t help but smile.

"I don’t know what I’d do without you, Remo."

"And you’ll never have to find out," he replied, his voice firm with conviction. He kissed her forehead, lingering for a moment as if imprinting the gesture with his care and dedication.

They sat there in silence, the room filled only with the soft ticking of the clock and the occasional crackle from the fireplace.

"Have you eaten?" Abby asked him as she slipped from his lap, her concern evident in her tone.

Remo shook his head. "No," he admitted, his mind clearly still preoccupied with the events of the day.

Abby frowned slightly, her nurturing instincts kicking in. "Let me cook for you," she declared, heading toward the kitchen.

"You don’t have to do that, Abby. I’m sure you’re just as tired," Remo replied, his voice carrying a note of appreciation.

"I want to," Abby insisted, pulling ingredients from the fridge. "It’ll be quick. How about some spaghetti carbonara?"
