Chapter 236: A child
Abby studied him, her skepticism returning. "And you’re okay with that? With being her shoulder to cry on while you’re also..."
"Sleeping with her? Yeah, I’m fine with it," Cage interrupted, his tone flippant. "It’s all part of the game, Abby. Everyone’s got their role to play."
Abby sighed, a mix of exasperation and resignation in her eyes. "Just be careful, Cage. There’s a thin line between lust and love... it’s bound to blow up in your face eventually."
Cage smiled, a glint of mischief in his eyes. "I’ll take my chances," he said, his voice low and confident. "Besides, where’s the fun if there’s no risk?"
Abby shook her head again, knowing that trying to reason with Cage was futile. "Just don’t say I didn’t warn you,"
Cage leaned back in his chair, a mischievous smile playing on his lips as he took a leisurely sip of his coffee. The café buzzed quietly around them, a soft murmur of conversations and clinking cups creating a backdrop to their own more intense discussion.
"I’m sure Alex is going to start chasing you around. Guys like that can’t handle the women they reject glowing up and being with someone better. The bastard must be going crazy right now," he said, his voice tinged with a mix of amusement and disdain.
Abby, having regained her composure, gave a small, wry smile. "That would be something to see," she remarked, her tone dry. "Alex has always thought too highly of himself. It’s about time he got knocked down a peg."
Cage nodded in agreement, his eyes glinting with the thrill of potential chaos. "Exactly. And what better way to shake him up than letting him see how little he actually mattered? It’s the perfect revenge for all his arrogance."
Abby leaned forward, her interest piqued despite her better judgment. "And you think playing this role with Lily will really get to him?"
Cage’s grin widened. "Oh, absolutely. Alex prides himself on being irreplaceable, on being the top dog. Seeing Lily move on so quickly and with someone he knows? It’ll drive him mad."
Abby considered this, a part of her intrigued by the dramatic fallout that seemed inevitable. "Just make sure you’re not caught in the crossfire, Cage. Alex isn’t known for playing fair."
Cage waved off her concern with a dismissive hand. "I can handle Alex. Besides, watching him lose his cool will be worth it."
The two shared a knowing look, the kind shared between co-conspirators or old friends who knew each other’s darkest secrets
Abby nodded, her face set with resolve. "Good. I want to finish this early so that I can spend time with Remo. I could crash the Harrisons so easily, but what’s the fun in that?" she said with a small tsk, a mischievous glint in her eye.
"I want to finish everything in a month. Whatever you plan to do with Lily, speed it up," Abby continued, her tone serious and commanding.
Cage raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the urgency in her voice. "Any reason why you’re in a hurry?" he asked, leaning forward slightly.
"Yes—I want to carry Remo’s child," Abby replied flatly, her expression unchanging.
Cage’s reaction was immediate; he recoiled slightly, his eyes wide with surprise. "You’re serious?" he blurted out, the shock evident in his voice.
Abby nodded firmly, her expression unchanging. "Very. I want to start a family with Remo, and I don’t want my plans or our future tangled up with any of this drama. The sooner it’s all behind me, the better."
Cage blinked, trying to process her words. "Wow, that’s... that’s big, Abby. I had no idea you were thinking about that."
"It’s not something I’ve been broadcasting," Abby admitted, her gaze shifting to the window, watching the world go by. "But it’s important to me, and I want to make sure nothing interferes with it."
Cage leaned back, his mind racing as he adjusted to this new angle. "Alright, I get it. I’ll talk to Fredrick, see if we can move things along faster. But, Abby," he paused, looking her directly in the eyes, "are you sure about this? About everything?"
Abby met his gaze, her determination clear. "I’ve never been more sure of anything. Remo and I are solid, and this is what I want. I just need to clear the path so we can start on the right foot, without any lingering messes."
Cage nodded slowly, the weight of her intentions settling on him. "Okay. I’ll do what I can on my end. Just make sure you’re ready for all this, Abby. Having a child is a big step."
"I know," Abby replied, her voice softening. "And I appreciate your help, Cage. Really, I do."
A sad look passed through his eyes. He forced out a nod, his agreement tinged with reluctance. "As much as I don’t agree with this, I know it’s the best thing if you want to keep Remo, even if the truth is revealed," he said, his voice low and earnest.
Abby paused, turning to face him fully. Her eyes searched his, looking for the doubt she knew was there. "I know it sounds drastic, Cage, but it’s thought through. Remo and I...really love him. He understands me, the good and the bad. I don’t want to lose him."
Cage sighed, rubbing the back of his neck as he wrestled with his own thoughts. "I get it, Abby. It’s just hard to watch, knowing how much is at stake. But I trust you know what you’re doing."
"Thanks, Cage. That means a lot," Abby replied, offering a small smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. "I just need everything else around us to be stable—no surprises, no sudden complications."
"I’ll make sure of it," Cage promised, his tone firm. "I’ll handle things with Lily. You just focus on what you need to do with Remo."
Abby nodded, her expression grateful yet tinged with the weight of her decisions. "I will. And Cage? Be careful. I don’t want you getting hurt in all this mess with Lily and Alex."
Cage chuckled, though the sound was hollow. "I’ll be fine. It’s not my first rodeo, you know."
