Chapter 231: A price
With a sense of trepidation, Mrs. Harrison stepped over the threshold into the dimly lit foyer of the house. The air seemed to grow heavier with each passing moment, thick with an unspoken tension that hung between them like a suffocating fog.
The man closed the door behind her with a heavy thud, the sound reverberating through the silence of the room. Mrs. Harrison’s heart hammered in her chest as she followed him further into the house, her senses on high alert as she braced herself for what was to come.
They entered a dimly lit sitting room, the only source of light coming from a single lamp in the corner. The man motioned for Mrs. Harrison to take a seat on the worn leather sofa, his eyes never leaving her as she obeyed, her hands trembling in her lap.
"So, Mrs. Harrison," he began, his voice low and menacing. "What brings you to my doorstep in the dead of night?"
Mrs. Harrison took a deep breath, steeling herself for the task ahead. "I... I need your help," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I’m in trouble, and I don’t know where else to turn."
The man leaned back in his chair, a predatory glint in his eyes as he regarded her with interest. "Trouble, you say?" he mused, his tone laced with amusement. "And what kind of trouble might that be?"
Mrs. Harrison hesitated, her mind racing as she weighed her options. She knew she was treading on dangerous ground, but she had no choice – she needed his help, now more than ever.
"It’s my husband," she confessed, her voice trembling with emotion. "He... he’s become violent, and I fear for my safety. I need someone to protect me, someone who can keep me safe from harm."
The man’s lips curled into a cruel smile, his eyes gleaming with a predatory light. "And what makes you think I’m the man for the job?" he asked, his voice dripping with malice.
Mrs. Harrison met his gaze with a steely determination, her resolve unwavering in the face of his intimidation tactics. "Because," she replied, her voice firm and unwavering. "I know you’re not afraid to get your hands dirty. And right now, I need someone who’s willing to do whatever it takes to protect me when the time comes – no questions asked."
The man regarded her for a long moment, his expression unreadable as he weighed her words. And then, finally, he nodded, a cold smile playing at the corners of his lips.
"Very well, Mrs. Harrison," he said, his voice dripping with menace. "Consider me your guardian angel. But remember – every favor comes with a price."
Mrs. Harrison nodded, her heart sinking at the ominous undertone in the man’s words. She knew that dealing with someone like him came with its own set of risks and consequences, but she had reached a point of desperation where she was willing to do whatever it took to protect herself.
"I understand," she replied, her voice steady despite the unease churning in her stomach. "I’m willing to pay whatever price you ask, as long as you keep me safe."
The man’s smile widened, a predatory gleam in his eyes as he leaned forward, his gaze locking onto hers with a chilling intensity. "Good," he purred, his voice dripping with malice. "Then we have ourselves a deal."
With that, he rose from his seat, towering over her like a looming shadow as he extended his hand towards her. Mrs. Harrison hesitated for a moment, her instincts screaming at her to turn and run. But she knew that there was no going back now – she had made her choice, and she would have to live with the consequences.
Steel in her spine, she reached out and grasped his hand in a firm handshake, sealing their unholy pact with a silent vow. And as their hands met, Mrs. Harrison couldn’t shake the feeling that she had just made a deal with the devil himself – a deal that would change the course of her life forever
As their hands parted, Mrs. Harrison felt a chill run down her spine, a shiver of apprehension coursing through her veins. The man’s grip was firm and unyielding, his touch leaving an indelible mark on her conscience as she watched him with a mixture of fear and uncertainty.
"Now," he said, his voice low and menacing. "Let’s discuss the terms of our arrangement."
Mrs. Harrison swallowed hard, her mouth suddenly dry as she braced herself for what was to come. She knew that dealing with someone like him was a dangerous game, one that could have dire consequences if she wasn’t careful.
"What do you want from me?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
The man’s smile widened, a cruel twist of fate that sent a shiver down her spine. "Oh, Mrs. Harrison," he replied, his voice dripping with malice. "You have no idea what you’ve gotten yourself into."
Mrs. Harrison’s heart sank as the man’s words cut through the silence of the room like a knife. She stiffened as he pulled her closer, his touch sending a shiver down her spine.
"You know what I want more than anything," he whispered, his breath hot against her ear.
She recoiled at his words, her mind reeling with a mixture of fear and disgust. She had known that dealing with someone like him would come with its own set of risks and consequences, but she had never imagined that he would stoop so low.
"Never in a million years did I think that jerk would lay a finger on you," he continued, his voice tinged with bitterness. "I guess money changes people, my love."
Mrs. Harrison’s breath caught in her throat at the man’s words, his grin sending a shiver down her spine. She recoiled from his touch, a surge of revulsion coursing through her veins at the mere thought of being with him.
"I... I don’t know what you’re talking about," she stammered, her voice trembling with fear and uncertainty.
