The Twisted Obsession -
Chapter 217: Fall
Chapter 217: Fall
As Abby left, Alice couldn’t help but watch the man beside her with a mixture of envy and curiosity. How had Abby managed to snag such a handsome man? She turned to Lily, expecting her friend to share in her disbelief, but found Lily preoccupied, her gaze scanning the room as if searching for someone.
Nudging her friend, Alice leaned in and whispered, "Who is that man? They’re saying he’s Abby’s husband. Is it true?"
Lily responded absentmindedly, her mind clearly elsewhere. "Yeah," she murmured, her attention still focused on the crowd.
Alice scoffed at Lily’s nonchalant response, her envy bubbling to the surface. "He’s too handsome for a freckle-freak-face," she remarked, her tone tinged with jealousy. "I want him."
Lily’s eyes snapped to Alice, a flicker of annoyance crossing her features. "Alice, I wouldn’t approach that man. Stay away from him" she scolded, her voice tinged with disapproval.
But Alice brushed off Lily’s admonishment with a wave of her hand, her eyes still fixed on the handsome stranger across the room. "I don’t see why not," she replied defiantly. "After all, a woman should always get what she wants, shouldn’t she?"
Lily sighed, realizing she couldn’t dissuade Alice from her desires. "Fine, do whatever you want," she relented, though there was a note of resignation in her voice.
As Alice continued to eye the handsome stranger, she couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the air. Turning to Lily once more, she posed a question. "Don’t you want him too?" she asked, curiosity lacing her words.
Lily shook her head adamantly, her gaze drifting to where Cage stood outside. "No," she replied firmly. "I have my sights set on someone else." Despite her words, a pang of longing flashed in her eyes, betraying her true feelings.
Alice noticed the flicker of emotion in Lily’s eyes, a knowing smirk crossing her lips. "Ah, I see," she teased, nudging Lily playfully. "You just want Cage, don’t you?"
Lily’s cheeks flushed slightly, but she refused to acknowledge Alice’s observation. Instead, she turned away, her focus returning to the room before them. But as she watched Cage from across the room, a sense of longing washed over her, reminding her of the desire that burned within her heart. And as she wrestled with her conflicting emotions, Lily couldn’t help but wonder if tonight would be the night she finally made her move.
"Well, let me see if I can grab his attention," Alice declared, her voice tinged with determination as she snatched Lily’s wine cup. Downing its contents in one gulp, she surged forward through the crowd, her sights set on Remo, who stood waiting for Abby.
Her steps faltered as she approached him, her heart pounding with nervous excitement. With a sly smile, Alice attempted to bump into Remo, hoping to initiate a conversation or catch his eye. But Remo, ever the observant one, gracefully sidestepped her, leaving Alice off-balance and stumbling.
In a split second, Alice found herself tripping over her own feet, landing with an undignified thud on the ground. The sudden commotion drew the attention of everyone in the room, their gazes fixated on her embarrassing fall.
Remo arched an eyebrow, his expression inscrutable as he offered a hand to help her up. "Careful there," he remarked dryly, his tone tinged with amusement.
Heat flooded Alice’s cheeks as she accepted his hand, feeling the weight of embarrassment settle over her like a heavy blanket. Muttering a quick apology, she scrambled to her feet and hastily retreated from the scene, her cheeks burning with humiliation.
As she made her way back to Lily, Alice couldn’t help but curse her own clumsiness. It seemed her attempt to catch Remo’s attention had backfired spectacularly, leaving her feeling more embarrassed than ever. She resolved to lay low for the rest of the evening, hoping to avoid any further embarrassment and salvage what little dignity she had left.
"Are you okay?" Lily asked, concern evident in her voice as she approached her friend.
Alice flushed with embarrassment, her cheeks burning as she cursed under her breath. Now, not only had she failed to catch Remo’s attention, but she had also become the center of attention herself, for all the wrong reasons.
With a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach, Alice realized that she would likely be the subject of gossip and ridicule tomorrow, her embarrassing fall immortalized in the eyes of the public. For someone who craved attention, this was not the kind of spotlight she had hoped for.
Forcing a weak smile, Alice nodded in response to Lily’s question, though her embarrassment was palpable. "Yeah, I’m fine," she muttered, though her tone betrayed her true feelings. Deep down, she couldn’t shake the humiliation of her public fall, the laughter of the crowd echoing in her ears like a cruel reminder of her
As Lily watched her friend with concern, she couldn’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Alice. She knew how much her friend valued her reputation and how devastating it must be for her to endure such public humiliation.
Placing a comforting hand on Alice’s shoulder, Lily offered a reassuring smile. "Don’t worry, Alice," she said softly. "It’s just a small mishap. No one will remember it by tomorrow."
But Alice couldn’t shake the feeling of embarrassment that gnawed at her, her mind racing with thoughts of how the incident would be perceived by others. She had always prided herself on being the center of attention, but now, the spotlight felt more like a harsh spotlight than a flattering one.
Taking a deep breath, Alice straightened up, determined to salvage what was left of the evening. "Thanks, Lily," she murmured, forcing a smile despite her inner turmoil. "I guess I just need to learn to be more careful next time."
Lily nodded, her mind already set on finding Cage. "Yeah, I’m going to look for Cage," she declared, leaving Alice alone with her thoughts.
As Lily scanned the hall, her eyes quickly found Cage standing outside, his brows furrowed in concentration as he finished his call. Without hesitation, she made her way over to him, her concern evident in her voice.
"Are you okay?" she asked gently, approaching him with a furrowed brow of her own. Cage looked up from his phone, surprised to see Lily standing before him. He turned around, half-expecting to see someone else, but it was just the two of them.
Caught off guard by Lily’s unexpected concern, Cage offered her a small smile. "Yeah, I’m fine," he replied, though there was a hint of uncertainty in his voice. "Just had to take care of some business."
