Chapter 209: Make it work

Chapter 209: Make it work

Abby sat in the passenger seat, her fingers tapping nervously on her thigh as Remo navigated the winding roads. She stole glances at him, trying to decipher the cryptic smile on his lips.

He seemed so sure of himself, so confident in whatever plan he had concocted. But Abby couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that crept over her.

"Where are we going, Remo?" she finally asked, unable to contain her curiosity any longer.

"It’s a surprise," he replied with a playful glint in his eyes, his gaze fixed on the road ahead.

Abby sighed, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. She had expected a day of relaxation, maybe a leisurely stroll through the city or a cozy café for lunch. But this... this was something entirely different. No bodyguards, no security detail, just the two of them on a mysterious journey to an unknown destination.

"Can’t you at least give me a hint?" she pleaded, her voice tinged with exasperation.

Remo chuckled softly, his hand reaching out to squeeze hers reassuringly. "Patience, Abby. All will be revealed in due time."

Abby huffed in frustration but relented, sinking back into her seat with a pout. She couldn’t help but admire Remo’s air of mystery, even if it did drive her crazy at times. There was something exhilarating about being whisked away on an adventure, even if she had no idea where they were headed.

As the minutes stretched into hours, Abby found herself growing increasingly restless. The scenery outside the window changed from bustling city streets to rolling hills and sprawling countryside. She watched in silence as Remo expertly maneuvered the car along the winding roads, his focus never wavering.

Finally, just as Abby was beginning to wonder if they would ever reach their destination, Remo pulled off the main road onto a narrow dirt path that disappeared into the trees. Abby’s heart raced with anticipation as they ventured deeper into the forest, the sunlight filtering through the leaves overhead.

"Where are we?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Remo grinned, his eyes sparkling with excitement. "We’re almost there."

And then, just like that, they emerged into a clearing bathed in golden sunlight. Abby’s breath caught in her throat as she took in the sight before her: a secluded lake nestled amidst the trees, its surface shimmering in the afternoon light.

"It’s beautiful," she whispered, her eyes wide with wonder.

Remo smiled, his hand finding hers once again. "I thought you might like it."

As they stepped out of the car and made their way down to the water’s edge, Abby felt a sense of peace wash over her. For the first time in what felt like ages, she could let go of her worries and simply enjoy the moment.

"Remember the last time we went to a lake?" Remo asked with a knowing smirk on his face.

Abby’s cheeks flushed at the memory, her mind instantly transported back to that day by the water’s edge. It was a moment etched into her memory, one she could never forget no matter how hard she tried. The way the moonlight danced on the surface of the lake, the gentle breeze that ruffled their hair, and the warmth of Remo’s lips against hers.

"Yeah," she replied softly, a hint of hesitation in her voice as she met Remo’s gaze.

His smirk only widened, a glint of mischief in his eyes as he took a step closer. "It feels like a lifetime ago, doesn’t it?"

Abby nodded, her heart pounding in her chest as she struggled to keep her composure.

She could still feel the lingering warmth of Remo’s touch, the electricity that had sparked between them in that moment of reckless abandon.

It was the day everything changed between them, the day she had shared her first kiss with Remo by the shimmering waters of a different lake.

"But here we are again," Remo continued, his voice low and husky, sending a shiver down Abby’s spine. "Just you and me, by the water’s edge."

Abby’s breath caught in her throat as she felt Remo’s hand brush against hers, sending a jolt of electricity through her veins.

It was as if time had stood still, as if nothing else in the world mattered except for this moment, this connection between them.

"Yeah," she whispered, her voice barely more than a breathless murmur. "Just you and me."

Remo chuckled softly, the sound sending a shiver down Abby’s spine. He stepped closer, his gaze intense as he reached out to tuck a stray lock of hair behind her ear.

"I’ve been thinking about it a lot lately," he admitted, his voice low and husky. "About you... about us."

Abby’s breath caught in her throat as she met his gaze, her heart pounding in her chest. In that moment, surrounded by the beauty of the lake and the warmth of Remo’s touch, she felt an undeniable connection between them.

"Me too," she confessed, her voice barely more than a whisper.

And then, without another word, Remo leaned in and captured her lips in a tender kiss, just like that night when she had kissed him.

They pulled apart with Remo’s hand lingered on hers, Abby felt a rush of emotions swirling within her.

The silence between them was palpable, filled with unspoken words and unspoken desires. Abby’s heart raced as she struggled to find the courage to voice the thoughts that had been swirling in her mind since they had embarked on this journey.

"Remo," she began, her voice barely above a whisper, "I... I’ve been thinking..."

Remo’s eyes met hers, a silent invitation to continue. His expression was unreadable, a mask of calm confidence that only served to intensify Abby’s nerves.

"I just... I want you to know how much this means to me," she continued, her words tumbling out in a rush. "Being here with you, away from everything else... it’s... it’s everything I’ve ever wanted."

Remo’s gaze softened, a flicker of warmth in his eyes as he reached out to gently brush a stray strand of hair from Abby’s face.

His touch was tender, his fingers tracing a delicate path along her cheek.

"I feel the same way, Abby," he murmured, his voice barely more than a whisper. "Being here with you, it’s... it’s everything to me too."

Abby’s lips pulled into a hesitant smile as she struggled to find the right words. "So, I’ve been... thinking," she began, her voice faltering slightly. She swallowed hard, feeling a knot of nervousness tighten in her stomach. Now that Remo was finally hers, she couldn’t shake the fear of losing him. The thought of him slipping away, of their connection fading into nothingness, filled her with an overwhelming sense of dread.

She found herself consumed by thoughts of him, her mind constantly replaying their moments together, every touch, every whispered word. His presence seemed to linger in every corner of her mind, his image burned into her memory like a permanent imprint.

Every waking moment was spent yearning for him, craving his touch, his affection.

She was afraid of what might happen if she let go, if she allowed herself to imagine a life without him by her side. The mere thought sent a chill down her spine, a cold, creeping dread that threatened to consume her.

And so, she clung to him with all her might, afraid to let go, afraid to lose the one person who had come to mean everything to her. She was obsessed, consumed by her love for him, unable to imagine a future without him in it.

Abby’s voice trembled as she spoke, the words tumbling out in a rush, fueled by fear and desperation. "If the one year is over... can I... can we still... I don’t want to lose you, Remo. Even if it’s as your mistress..."

Her heart pounded in her chest as she waited for his response, her stomach churning with anxiety. The thought of losing him, of being cast aside after their time together, was almost too much to bear. She couldn’t imagine a life without him, couldn’t fathom the emptiness that would consume her if he were no longer a part of it.

But even as she spoke the words, a part of her recoiled at the idea of being relegated to the role of mistress, of being kept hidden away, a secret to be concealed from the world.

Yet, in that moment, all Abby could think of was the desperate need to hold onto him, to cling to any shred of hope that they might still have a future together, however unconventional it may be.

Remo’s gaze softened as he reached out to gently cup her face in his hands. "Abby," he said softly, his voice filled with tenderness, "Why would I make you just a mistress? You’re so much more than that."

A surge of relief washed over Abby as she met his gaze, her eyes brimming with tears. In that moment, she felt a glimmer of hope, a flicker of possibility that maybe, just maybe, they could find a way to make it work, to defy the odds stacked against them.

"I don’t want to lose you either, Abby," Remo whispered, his thumb brushing away a stray tear from her cheek. "We’ll find a way to make it work, I promise."
