Chapter 190: Secrets hidden

Nicole took a leisurely sip of her wine, the deep crimson liquid swirling elegantly in her glass as she fixed Remo with a mischievous smile. Her eyes danced with an enigmatic glint, as if she held a secret that she was itching to share.

Remo narrowed his eyes at her, his senses on high alert. He knew that look – it was the same one she had worn right before dropping a bombshell during their earlier conversation. Whatever Nicole had on her mind, it was sure to be trouble.

Nicole set down her wine glass with deliberate care, her gaze fixed intently on Remo as if measuring his reaction. "I’ve been doing some digging," she began, her voice low and conspiratorial. "And I’ve uncovered some information that I think you’ll find... intriguing."

Remo leaned forward, his interest piqued despite himself. "Go on," he urged, his voice barely above a whisper.

Nicole’s smile turned into a smirk, her eyes alight with excitement. "It seems that your wife’s family has some... skeletons in their closet," she revealed, her words dripping with malice.

Remo’s blood ran cold at her words, his mind racing with possibilities. "What do you mean?" he demanded, his voice taut with anticipation.

Nicole leaned back in her seat, her expression smug as she savored Remo’s reaction. "Let’s just say that Charles Falcone wasn’t as clean as he liked to appear," she explained cryptically. "And it seems that your dear wife may have inherited more than just his fortune."

Remo’s jaw clenched at the insinuation, his mind reeling with the implications of Nicole’s words. If what she was saying was true, then Abby’s father was hiding secrets far darker than he had ever imagined.

"What do you mean?" Remo asked, his voice tinged with suspicion.

Nicole shrugged casually, as if her revelation was nothing more than a passing observation. "The Falcone empire wasn’t built on hard work alone," she said cryptically.

Remo’s brow furrowed in confusion, unsure of where Nicole was going with her statement. "What are you getting at, Nicole?" he pressed, his tone edging towards impatience.

Nicole’s lips curled into a sly smile, her eyes glittering with mischief. "Despite Charles Falcone being a great dad, he had secrets," she explained, her words dripping with intrigue. "Secrets I happened to stumble upon while investigating my new rival – your wife."

Remo’s heart skipped a beat at her words, a sense of foreboding settling over him like a heavy cloak. "What secrets?" he demanded, his voice low and dangerous.

But Nicole only chuckled softly, her amusement at his expense evident. "Oh, Remo," she taunted, her voice filled with malice. "You’ll just have to wait and see."

Remo’s jaw tightened at Nicole’s words, a sense of unease settling over him like a heavy weight. He knew all too well the dangers of delving into the secrets of powerful people, especially when it involved matters as sensitive as murder.

"You were investigating who killed him?" Remo asked, his voice low and dangerous.

Nicole’s response was swift and blunt. "Yes, I thought if I found out, you would meet me but I stopped. You should stop too," she commanded, her tone leaving no room for argument. "You may be powerful, Remo, but there are more powerful people out there that we don’t want to mess with."

Remo gritted his teeth in frustration, his mind racing with conflicting emotions. He wanted justice for Charles Falcone’s death, but he also knew the risks involved in pursuing it since he couldn’t find any traces the person who did might be extremely powerful.

"As much as we ended on bad terms, I’m always looking out for you," Nicole continued, her voice softening slightly. "You’re my favorite master after all."

"I appreciate your concern, Nicole," Remo replied, his voice tinged with resignation. "But I need answers. I need to know who killed him, and why."

There was a moment of tense silence before Nicole spoke again, her voice heavy with regret. "Just be careful, Remo," she warned, her words a stark reminder of the dangers that lurked in the shadows. "Some secrets are better left buried."

Remo frowned, his mind racing with thoughts of his wife and her relentless pursuit of answers regarding her father’s death. But as he pondered Nicole’s cryptic warning, a cold realization washed over him. If even Nicole, with all her power and connections, was afraid of stirring up certain forces, then the danger must be grave indeed.

He suddenly remembered the words Charles Falcone had spoken to him before his untimely demise – a warning that he wished he had heeded more closely. "I wish I had prepared Abby more for the storm coming," Charles had said, his voice filled with regret.

Remo’s heart sank as he considered the implications of those words. What storm was Charles referring to? And why had he failed to protect his daughter from its wrath?

But knowing Nicole and her ulterior motives, Remo suspected that she wouldn’t reveal what she had found – not out of loyalty to him, but out of disdain for Abby.

The tension between Remo and Nicole was palpable, hanging thick in the air like a suffocating fog, as they sat in the dimly lit restaurant booth. Remo’s mind was still reeling from their conversation, his thoughts consumed by the ominous warning Nicole had delivered.

But before either of them could speak another word, the waiter approached, carrying a tray laden with steaming plates of food. The aroma of grilled steak and garlic mashed potatoes filled the air, momentarily distracting Remo from the weight of their conversation.

"Here you go, folks," the waiter said cheerfully, setting the plates down in front of them with a practiced flourish. "Enjoy your meal."

"Is there anything else I can get for you?" the waiter asked, oblivious to the undercurrents of tension that crackled in the air.

Remo shook his head, his attention already drifting back to Nicole. "No, that’ll be all," he replied curtly, his voice betraying none of the turmoil that churned within him.

As the waiter retreated, leaving them alone once again, Remo turned his gaze back to Nicole, his eyes piercing and intense.

"I promised my wife, I will find her dad’s murderer. I have to keep that promise." Remo told Nicole.
