Chapter 187: Clingy

Chapter 187: Clingy

Remo’s jaw clenched, irritation simmering beneath the surface. He hated when Tony got under his skin like this, probing at his personal life with relentless curiosity.

"It’s nothing," Remo muttered, his tone brusque. "Just checking in with someone, that’s all."

Tony’s grin widened, clearly enjoying Remo’s discomfort. "Ah, I see. Checking in with someone, huh? Well, whoever they are, they must be pretty special to distract you like that."

Remo raised an eyebrow, his expression guarded. "Just checking in with Abby," he replied casually, hoping to deflect Tony’s curiosity.

Tony’s grin widened, his teasing tone unmistakable. "Ah, the lovely Abby," he said, leaning back in his chair. "Keeping tabs on you, is she?"

Remo rolled his eyes, a faint blush creeping up his neck. "Something like that," he muttered, trying to brush off Tony’s teasing.

But Tony wasn’t so easily deterred. "You know, Remo," he said, his voice dripping with mock seriousness. "I never took you for the clingy type."

Remo bristled slightly at the jab, but he couldn’t deny the truth in Tony’s words. He hadn’t fully realized it himself, but the thought of being apart from Abby for even a moment filled him with an irrational sense of panic.

"I’m not clingy," Remo protested, though the words sounded feeble even to his own ears.

Tony chuckled, clearly enjoying Remo’s discomfort. "Sure, sure," he said, waving a dismissive hand. "Whatever you say, boss."

Remo scowled playfully, but deep down, he knew that Tony was right. He had never felt this way about anyone before, and the thought of losing Abby was more terrifying than he cared to admit.

Remo fixed Tony with a stern look, his voice firm. "Focus, Tony. We need to solve this, and the sooner we do, the sooner we can all go home. "You’re right, boss. Sorry, got a bit carried away there."

Remo waved off the apology, understanding Tony’s tendency to let his mind wander. "No worries. Now, about finding this thief..."

Before Remo could finish his sentence, Tony interjected, a thoughtful expression crossing his face. "You know who is good at this kind of thing? Nicole. Remember her?"

Remo’s brow furrowed as he considered Tony’s suggestion. Nicole had been a skilled investigator, with a knack for uncovering secrets that others might overlook. If anyone could help them crack this case, it was her.

He needed answers, and he needed them fast. The thought of someone betraying him, stealing from him, filled him with a simmering rage that threatened to boil over.

But even as he grudgingly acknowledged her skills, a sense of unease gnawed at him. Nicole was a wild card, unpredictable and dangerous. Their past had been filled with passion and danger, but he had walked away for a reason. He couldn’t afford to let her back into his life, not when the stakes were this high

With a sigh, Remo reached for his phone once again, his fingers hovering over the screen. He knew that Nicole was his best chance at uncovering the truth, no matter the risks. And as he dialed her number, he couldn’t help but wonder if he was making a deal with the devil himself.

Remo’s call to Nicole was met with a tone of familiarity, tinged with a hint of exasperation.

"Well, well Remo Quinn calling me. How interesting. Do you miss me or something?"

Remo’s grip tightened on the phone as he recognized the voice on the other end. Nicole. A reminder of a past he preferred to keep buried. He had severed ties with her for good reason, but desperate times sometimes called for desperate measures.

"You know I only call when I need something," Remo replied coolly, his tone betraying none of the tumultuous emotions swirling inside him.

Nicole’s laughter crackled through the phone, sharp and bitter. "And here I thought I was your favorite person to talk to," she said, her voice dripping with sarcasm.

Remo ignored the jibe, his mind already focused on the reason for his call. "I need you to do some digging for me," he said, getting straight to the point.

Nicole’s interest was piqued. "What kind of digging?" she asked, her tone shifting to one of professional curiosity.

Remo outlined the task at hand, knowing that Nicole’s skills were unmatched when it came to gathering information and uncovering secrets. Despite their complicated history, he trusted her to get the job done.

Nicole listened intently, her mind already racing with possibilities. "Consider it done, you will hear from me in 24 hours." she said, her voice low and determined.

Remo felt a surge of relief wash over him. He may have cut ties with Nicole on a personal level, but he knew that when it came to business, she was the best in the business.

"Thanks, Nicole," he said, a note of gratitude creeping into his voice despite himself.

Nicole chuckled darkly. "Don’t thank me yet," she replied cryptically before ending the call.

But as he ended the call and set his phone down, he couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that lingered in the air. Dealing with Nicole was like playing with fire, and he knew all too well the dangers of getting burned.

"I know your past history, but you have to admit, she’s our best shot," Tony told Remo seeing the frown on his face.

Remo glanced up at Tony, his expression unreadable as he considered his words. He knew Tony was right – Nicole may be a risky choice, but she was undeniably skilled at what she did.

"You’re right, Tony," Remo conceded, his voice laced with resignation. "As much as I hate to admit it, she’s our best shot at getting to the bottom of this."

Tony nodded, his expression serious. "We’ll keep a close eye on her, make sure she doesn’t cause any trouble," he assured Remo.

Remo nodded in agreement, though he knew that keeping Nicole in check would be easier said than done. She was a force to be reckoned with, and he couldn’t afford to underestimate her.

"Let’s just hope she doesn’t cause more problems than she solves," Remo muttered, a note of uncertainty creeping into his voice. He couldn’t shake the feeling that he was dancing with the devil once again. And this time, the consequences could be far more dire than he dared to imagine.
