Chapter 146: Hypocrisy
Chapter 146: Hypocrisy
The funeral home was bathed in a solemn hush as mourners gathered to pay their final respects to Mr. Falcone. Rows of cushioned chairs filled the spacious room, draped in somber shades of black and navy. Floral arrangements adorned every corner, their fragrant blooms casting a delicate fragrance in the air.
As the mourners settled into their seats, a sense of quiet reverence descended upon the room. Soft strains of classical music floated through the air, mingling with the murmured conversations of those in attendance.
At the front of the room, a podium stood draped in black cloth, a symbol of the solemn occasion. Behind it, a large photograph of Mr. Falcone smiled down upon the gathering, his warm gaze a poignant reminder of the man they had come to honor.
Amidst the sea of mourners, a figure stood out, her heart heavy with grief and sorrow. Abby sat with her head bowed, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. Tears glistened in her eyes as she struggled to come to terms with the enormity of her loss.
As the service began, a somber atmosphere settled over the room, punctuated only by the occasional sniffle or stifled sob. The officiant offered words of comfort and solace, his voice a steady presence amidst the sea of grief.
As the service drew to a close, the officiant stepped forward to announce that it was time for family members to share their memories of Mr. Falcone. A hushed silence fell over the room as all eyes turned to Abby, the daughter of the man they had come to honor.
"Abby?" came the familiar voice of the officiant. "It’s time for you to speak."
As the mourners turned to Abby, she felt a wave of nervousness wash over her. Public speaking had never been her strong suit, and the weight of her father’s memory felt almost too heavy to bear. But she knew she had to do this, for him.
Taking a deep breath to steady her trembling voice, Abby stepped forward to the podium. Her heart pounded in her chest, and her hands shook ever so slightly as she clutched the edges of the wooden stand.
"U-um...," Abby began, her voice barely above a whisper. She cleared her throat and tried again. "Um... Th-thank you all for being here today." Her words came out in halting fragments, and she struggled to find her voice amidst the sea of expectant faces.
"My... my father was...," Abby paused, trying to steady her nerves. "He was the best man I’ve ever known." She closed her eyes for a moment, summoning the strength to continue. "He... he was always there for me, no matter what."
Tears welled up in Abby’s eyes as memories of her father flooded her mind. She remembered his gentle smile, his reassuring hugs, and the countless times he had wiped away her tears.
"He... he was my rock," Abby continued, her voice wavering with emotion. "And... and I’ll never forget the l-lessons he taught me. About love, about kindness, about... about being a good person."
A lump formed in Abby’s throat as she struggled to find the right words to express the depth of her love for her father. She knew she could never do him justice with mere words, but she hoped that her heartfelt tribute would honor his memory in some small way.
"Th-thank you, Dad," Abby whispered, her voice barely audible over the hushed silence of the room. "I... I’ll love you f-forever." With a final, shaky breath, she stepped away from the podium, her heart heavy with grief but also filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the time she had shared with her beloved father.
As she settled back into her seat, Cage leaned over and handed her a phone. With a curious glance, Abby took the phone and unlocked the screen to reveal a message from Remo.
"You did well, Baby. I’m proud of you," the message read, accompanied by a small heart emoji. Abby’s heart swelled with warmth at Remo’s words.
Turning around, Abby scanned the room until her eyes landed on Remo, sitting at the back with a faint smile on his lips. Their gazes met, and for a brief moment, everything else faded away as Abby felt a rush of love and gratitude wash over her.
The next person to give the speech was Harrison. Mr. Harrison, stepped forward to deliver a speech in honor of Mr. Falcone. His words were carefully chosen, his voice trembling with emotion as he spoke of the man he claimed to have admired and respected.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Mr. Harrison began, his voice cracking with feigned sorrow. "Today, we gather to remember a man who was not only a pillar of the community but a beloved father, husband, and friend."
Abby watched from across the room, her eyes narrowed as she observed Mr. Harrison’s performance. She knew the truth behind his facade, the lies and deceit that lurked beneath his carefully crafted words.
"Mr. Falcone was a man of integrity, honor, and compassion," Mr. Harrison continued, his tone filled with false sincerity. "He touched the lives of all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and generosity."
Abby’s jaw clenched as Mr. Harrison spoke, her fists tightening at her sides. How dare he stand there and pretend to mourn her father’s passing, knowing full well the role he had played in his demise.
"As we bid farewell to Mr. Falcone, let us remember the impact he had on our lives," Mr. Harrison concluded, his voice quivering with emotion. "May his memory live on in our hearts forever."
With a final, dramatic flourish, Mr. Harrison stepped away from the podium, wiping away nonexistent tears from his eyes. Abby watched him with contempt, her stomach churning with disgust at the sight of his hypocrisy.
As the guests offered their condolences and shared fond memories of Mr. Falcone, Abby couldn’t help but feel a sense of anger and betrayal simmering beneath the surface. She knew that Mr. Harrison’s words were nothing more than empty platitudes, a cruel mockery of the truth.
