Chapter 143: Bodyguard
Chapter 143: Bodyguard
Abby stole glances at Remo as they sat in the backseat while the driver navigated the streets back home. His silence was suffocating, too heavy and too quiet for her liking. Since he had walked in on her and Cage, he hadn’t said a word. The memory of Remo’s pained expression when he caught sight of Cage affectionately holding her cheeks haunted her.
Guilt gnawed at her insides, twisting and churning with every passing moment of Remo’s silence. She wanted to reach out, to explain, to reassure him that there was nothing between her and Cage, but the words stuck in her throat like a lump of lead. Fear gripped her heart, tightening its hold with each stolen glance she stole at Remo’s stoic profile.
Their goodbye to Cage had been awkward, the tension between them palpable in the air. Abby couldn’t shake the feeling of being watched, of Remo’s eyes boring into her as they bid Cage farewell. She couldn’t bear the thought of him harboring suspicions, of doubting her loyalty and commitment to their marriage.
She stole another glance at him, her heart sinking at the sight of his stoic expression. He stared out the window, his jaw clenched tight, and Abby could feel the weight of his unspoken words hanging in the air between them.
Unable to bear the silence any longer, Abby finally mustered the courage to speak. "Remo, I..." she began, her voice trembling with emotion. But before she could finish, he turned to her with a look that made her words die on her lips.
Abby’s palms grew clammy as she wrung her hands in her lap, stealing another glance at Remo. His jaw was clenched, his gaze fixed on the passing scenery outside the window. The distance between them felt like an unbridgeable chasm, each moment stretching out into an eternity of silence.
Remo finally broke the silence, his voice low and strained. "Abby, what was that back there?" he asked, his tone carefully neutral.
Abby’s heart pounded in her chest, her breath catching in her throat. She knew what he was referring to, the moment when Cage had held her cheeks in a gesture of comfort. How could she explain the unexplainable, reassure Remo that there was nothing between her and Cage?
"I-I’m sorry, Remo," she stammered, her voice barely above a whisper. "It was nothing, I swear. Cage was just... comforting me. It didn’t mean anything."
Remo’s expression remained unreadable, his silence stretching out between them like a yawning chasm. Abby felt the weight of his gaze on her, a silent accusation that she couldn’t bear.
"I trust you, Abby," Remo finally said, his voice strained with emotion. "But I can’t shake this feeling..."
Abby’s heart shattered at the pain in his voice, the doubt that lingered in his words. She reached out tentatively, her hand hovering in the space between them, longing to bridge the gap that had grown between them.
"I love you, Remo," she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion. "Please, believe me."
Remo turned to look at her, his eyes searching hers for a glimmer of truth. After a long moment, he nodded, his expression softening with understanding.
"I received a call from Tony," Remo said, his voice breaking the tense silence in the car. "They’ve got a lead on Martha."
Abby’s heart leaped into her throat at the mention of Martha’s name. Her disappearance had left them all on edge, especially with the suspicion surrounding her possible involvement in her father’s shooting. The news of a potential lead brought a mix of hope and anxiety.
"In the evening, we’ll know if they’ve found her," Remo continued, his tone heavy with anticipation.
Abby nodded, her mind racing with possibilities. Martha had been missing for too long, and the uncertainty had taken its toll on all of them. She hoped and prayed that they would find her safe and unharmed.
"Thank you for letting me know," Abby said softly, her voice tinged with gratitude. "I just hope they find her soon."
Remo reached out and squeezed her hand, offering a silent reassurance. "Me too," he replied, his eyes reflecting her concern. "We’ll find out soon enough."
As they arrived home, Abby couldn’t shake off the lingering unease about Martha’s disappearance. Remo’s phone buzzed with a message, and he excused himself to take the call, leaving Abby alone in the living room.
Lost in her thoughts, Abby absentmindedly glanced out the window, only to catch sight of a stunning woman with flowing blonde hair, laughing with Remo outside. A pang of jealousy shot through Abby as she watched them, her mind racing with irrational thoughts.
Remo’s laughter echoed through the room, and Abby’s jealousy intensified. Who was this woman, and why was she making Remo laugh like that? Was she someone from his past, or worse, someone new?
Unable to bear the sight any longer, Abby stormed out of the house, her heart pounding with anger and insecurity. She marched over to where Remo and the woman stood, her fists clenched at her sides.
"Remo," she called out, her voice sharp with accusation.
Remo turned to face her, surprise flickering in his eyes at her sudden appearance. "Abby, what’s wrong?" he asked, his brow furrowing with concern.
Abby ignored his question, her gaze locked on the woman standing beside him. "And who is this?" she demanded, her tone laced with jealousy.
The woman smiled politely, extending her hand. "Hi, I’m Olivia, your new bodyguard," she said with a friendly smile.
Abby’s brows furrowed in surprise as the woman’s introduction sank in. She hadn’t expected him to arrange for a personal bodyguard, and the realization left her feeling conflicted. On one hand, she appreciated his concern for her safety, but on the other, she couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease at the thought of constantly being shadowed by a bodyguard.
"I... I see," Abby replied, her voice tinged with uncertainty. "Thank you, Remo. It’s just... I wasn’t expecting this."
Remo reached out and gently squeezed her hand, his eyes soft with understanding. "I know it’s unexpected, Abby, but with everything that’s been happening lately, I just want to make sure you’re safe," he explained, his tone gentle.
Abby nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "I appreciate it, Remo. Truly," she said sincerely.
Olivia, the bodyguard, stepped forward, "Ms. Abby, it’s a pleasure to meet you," she said, her voice steady and professional.
Abby offered her a tentative smile, feeling a mixture of gratitude and apprehension. "Likewise, Olivia," she replied, trying to hide the unease that gnawed at her insides.
