Chapter 139: Answers
The city sprawled beneath Abby like a sprawling labyrinth, its myriad of lights flickering like distant stars in the evening sky. Yet, despite the bustling energy below, she found solace in the quiet solitude of the rooftop. The cool breeze whispered through her hair, offering a brief respite from the chaos that churned within her mind.
Lost in her thoughts, Abby traced the outline of the skyline with her gaze, her mind drifting to Remo. She couldn’t shake the feeling that he was walking on eggshells around her, as if afraid to touch upon the depths of her emotions. It was as if Cage’s words had been etched into her consciousness, haunting her with their truth.
Should she open up to Remo? The question echoed in her mind, bouncing off the walls of her uncertainty. She knew she was carrying baggage – scars from her past that she had carefully concealed beneath layers of bravado and false smiles. But would he want her if he knew the truth? Would he see beyond the facade she had erected?
A pang of longing tugged at her heart as she thought of Remo, his warm smile and gentle touch a beacon of comfort in her tumultuous world. Yet, the fear of rejection held her back, chaining her to the shadows of her own insecurities.
Closing her eyes, Abby took a deep breath, letting the cool night air fill her lungs. She knew she couldn’t keep hiding forever, couldn’t keep pushing away the one person who had managed to slip past her defenses. But the thought of exposing her vulnerabilities to him – of laying bare the shattered pieces of her soul – filled her with a paralyzing dread.
She heard hurried footsteps approaching, accompanied by the urgent call of her name. "Abby!"
Startled, Abby turned her head, her eyes widening as she spotted Remo sprinting towards her. For a moment, she feared he might crash into her with the speed of his approach, but he skidded to a halt just in front of her, bending over to catch his breath.
"Abby," he panted, his chest heaving with the exertion. "God, you scared the hell out of me."
Concern etched into his features, Remo scanned her figure quickly, searching for any signs of injury. "Are you alright?" he asked, his voice laced with worry.
"Yeah, I’m okay," Abby reassured him, guilt tugging at her conscience as she took in his panicked state. "I’m sorry, Remo. I didn’t mean to worry you."
Remo let out a ragged sigh, his expression a mixture of relief and frustration. "I’ve been searching the whole house for you," he explained, his voice strained with emotion. "I didn’t know where you were."
Abby’s heart sank at the distress evident in his voice, realizing the impact of her sudden disappearance. "I’m sorry, you were sleeping peacefully, I didn’t want to disturb you." she whispered, feeling the weight of her actions pressing down on her. He had fallen asleep after she had coaxed him to rest. He had barely slept during her admission at the hospital. No wonder he had slept for almost seven hours.
"I should have left you a note or something. I wasn’t thinking properly."
"Yes you should have!" Remo exclaimed, his frustration bubbling to the surface. "I didn’t know what happened or where you were."
She flinched at the sharpness of his tone, her own guilt mirrored in his raised voice. Remo’s expression softened as he noticed her reaction, his hand moving to his chest as he took a deep breath.
"I’m sorry," he apologized, his voice gentler now as he rubbed his hands over his face. "I’m sorry for getting worked up. I was worried."
Abby nodded, her gaze fixed on the floor as she traced patterns with her fingers, the weight of Remo’s concern heavy on her heart. "I’m sorry," she murmured again, her voice tinged with regret. "I know I should have told you. I just... I needed to get away for a bit."
"I’m not upset with you," Remo reassured her, his tone softening as he lowered himself to sit beside her. "I was just worried." He sat beside her with his legs bent, resting his arms on his knees, a comforting presence at her side.
Leaning into his side, she found solace in his comforting presence, the tension slowly dissipating from her body.
"I appreciate your concern, Remo," she murmured, her voice barely above a whisper as she let herself relax against him. "I didn’t mean to cause you worry."
Remo’s arm encircled her shoulders, offering a silent gesture of support as he glanced out at the city skyline spread before them. The gentle breeze tousled their hair, carrying with it the scent of the night air and the distant hum of the city below.
"I just needed some time to clear my head," Abby admitted, her voice tinged with vulnerability as she opened up to him. "There’s been a lot on my mind lately, and I didn’t want to burden you with
"Well," Remo began, his voice gentle as he turned his gaze towards the stars above . "You can pretend I’m not here if you want. If you need time here, to think. Take all the time you need."
Abby’s eyes wandered over him, taking in the sight of him in the. He wore the same sweatpants he had slept in and his t-shirt was crumpled. But it was his face that captivated her – the way the moonlight played upon his features, casting soft shadows that highlighted the warmth in his brown eyes. his presence causing her heart to flutter in her chest.
As he waited for her response, Abby felt a swell of gratitude wash over her. Remo’s willingness to give her space, to stand by her side without intrusion, spoke volumes about the depth of his understanding and care.
"No... I’m glad you’re here," she told him, her voice barely above a whisper. She watched as his eyes briefly closed, a soft smile gracing his lips at her words, as though her acknowledgment meant the world to him.
"Can I ask you something?" Remo said, breaking the silence.
"The doctor said this isn’t your first attempt—Why—When—is there something I should know? What were you thinking?" Remo’s voice broke the silence, his concern palpable as he turned towards Abby, searching her face for answers.
