Chapter 128: Worth fighting for
Beatrix and her father stayed behind to look after Abby. As Beatrix gazed at the young woman who had captured her brother’s heart, her lips curled into a soft smile. Despite Abby’s pale complexion and the fragility of her form, there was an undeniable beauty and grace to her presence.
"She’s cute, isn’t she?" Beatrix murmured to her father, her voice filled with warmth and admiration.
Her father nodded, his expression thoughtful as he watched Abby sleeping peacefully in the hospital bed. "Yes, she is," he agreed quietly. "And she seems to bring out a different side of Remo."
Beatrix nodded in agreement, her gaze lingering on Abby’s serene features. She could see how Abby’s calm and gentle demeanor was the perfect match for her brother, who often struggled to express his emotions openly.
When Beatrix had mentioned love earlier, she had seen a myriad of emotions flicker across Remo’s face—fear, recognition, confusion, and something else, something deeper that she couldn’t quite name. It was a revelation that both fascinated and moved her, offering a glimpse into her brother’s innermost thoughts and feelings.
As Beatrix reflected on Remo’s past, she couldn’t help but feel a twinge of sadness for the loss he had endured. Matteo had told her about Izabella, Remo’s first love, and the tragic end to their relationship when she had found her picture in his wallet some time ago. It was a story that had haunted Remo for years, keeping him from opening his heart to anyone else.
But now, as Beatrix looked at Abby lying before her, she felt a surge of hope for her brother’s future. Whoever this woman was, she had managed to break through the walls that Remo had erected around his heart, offering him a chance at happiness that he had long thought impossible.
"I wonder how she and Remo had met?" Beatrix murmured, speaking to her father. She approached him, her curiosity piqued by the enigma of Abby and Remo’s relationship.
Her father met her gaze, his expression thoughtful. "According to my investigations, she had been coming to the casino club waiting for him for weeks," he replied, his tone serious.
Beatrix’s eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Really?" she exclaimed, taken aback by the revelation. The idea that Abby had been patiently waiting for Remo, even before they had officially met, seemed almost too incredible to believe.
Her father nodded, his demeanor grave. "Yes, that’s what my sources tell me," he confirmed. "It seems she was quite determined to catch his attention."
Beatrix’s mind whirled with questions as she tried to make sense of the situation. What had prompted Abby to wait for Remo at the club for so long? What had drawn her to him in the first place?
"I wonder what drew her to him," Beatrix pondered aloud, her brow furrowing with curiosity. "What made her wait for him for so long?"
Her father shrugged, a knowing smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "I don’t know, but she’s not a threat, at least not yet," he replied, his tone tinged with amusement.
Beatrix raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued by her father’s cryptic response. "Do you think Remo is in love with her?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Her father chuckled softly, shaking his head. "Everyone can see he’s a goner," he remarked, a hint of affection in his tone. "Only he can’t see that he loves her yet. Did you see the shock on his face earlier?"
Beatrix nodded in agreement, a small smile playing at her lips. "Yes, I did," she admitted, her mind still reeling from the revelation. "It was like he couldn’t believe it himself."
*****************
Remo and Matteo sat side by side in the back of the car, the tension palpable between them as they navigated the labyrinth of their own thoughts. Each lost in their own world of contemplation and concern, the silence stretched on like an endless chasm.
Finally, it was Matteo who broke the oppressive quiet, his voice measured and filled with a weighty seriousness. "Do you love her?" he asked, his gaze fixed on Remo with a searching intensity.
Remo felt a jolt of apprehension shoot through him at the question, his mind racing to find the right words to convey the complexity of his feelings. He shifted uncomfortably in his seat, struggling to articulate the swirling emotions that churned within him.
"I... I don’t know yet," Remo admitted hesitantly, his voice tinged with uncertainty. "It’s... complicated."
Matteo nodded in understanding, his expression sympathetic yet probing. "Tony told me everything," he continued, his tone gentle yet probing. "I know this is not the right time to ask this, but are you ready to sacrifice yourself for her? Whatever issues she has... seem dangerous."
Remo’s heart skipped a beat at Matteo’s words, the gravity of the situation weighing heavily on him. He knew the risks involved, the potential dangers that lurked in the shadows, yet he couldn’t deny the pull he felt towards Abby, the deep-rooted desire to protect her at all costs.
"It’s... it’s a lot to consider," Remo murmured, his brow furrowing with worry. "But... if it comes down to it, I’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe."
Matteo nodded solemnly, his gaze reflecting both understanding and concern. "I know you will, Remo," he replied, his voice filled with a mix of reassurance and apprehension. "Just... be careful. We don’t know what we’re dealing with here."
Remo swallowed hard, the weight of Matteo’s words settling heavily on his shoulders. He knew the risks involved in getting involved with Abby, knew that her troubles could potentially put them both in danger.
But despite the looming threats, he couldn’t shake the deepening connection he felt towards her, the undeniable pull that drew him closer with each passing moment.
"I will," Remo vowed, his voice tinged with determination. "I’ll do whatever it takes to protect her, Matteo. I promise."
""You seem to have some zeal in life now," Matteo remarked, his tone laced with a hint of amusement and genuine warmth as he observed his brother’s newfound determination.
Remo nodded, a faint smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Yeah, I guess I do," he admitted, the spark of enthusiasm evident in his eyes. "Abby has a way of bringing out the best in me."
Matteo’s smile widened at his brother’s words, a sense of pride swelling within him. "I’m glad to see you like this, Remo," he said, his voice filled with genuine happiness. "It’s about time you found something worth fighting for."
