Chapter 127: Family visit
It’s been 3 days since he nearly lost Abby. Three agonizing days that felt like an eternity, each passing moment dragging him further into the depths of despair. Remo had never been the same since that harrowing ordeal, his spirit shattered and his heart heavy with the weight of his emotions.
He was just a shell of himself, a mere shadow of the man he once was. The vibrant energy and vitality that had once defined him seemed to have vanished, replaced by a hollow emptiness that gnawed at his soul.
Remo found himself drowning inside, consumed by a darkness that threatened to swallow him whole. He struggled to find his footing in the midst of the storm raging within him, his thoughts turbulent and chaotic as he grappled with the overwhelming sense of loss and guilt that consumed him.
The fear that Abby would wake up and not see him, that she would never forgive him for the pain he had caused her, was the only reason why he was holding on. But even that fragile thread of hope felt like it was slipping through his fingers, leaving him adrift in a sea of uncertainty and despair.
God, he missed her—missed her so much it hurt. He hadn’t realized how much he needed her until now, until she was lying unconscious in a hospital bed, fighting for her life.
He was afraid to admit it, but damn... Abby was his anchor, his guiding light in the darkness. She was the one who had shown him what it meant to love and be loved again after all these years, and the thought of losing her was more than he could bear.
Abby’s face flashed through his mind again, her delicate features etched with pain and sadness, and he shook his head in a futile attempt to banish the image. She was like the angel on his shoulder, reminding him of all the reasons why he should hold on, why he shouldn’t end it all too.
But alongside that reminder came a flood of guilt and self-loathing, as Remo grappled with the knowledge of the pain he had caused Abby. He felt like a predator posing as a house pet, a monster masquerading as a man.
Despite the darkness that threatened to consume him, Remo couldn’t shake the foreign emotions that Abby had stirred within him. She had brought out things in him that he didn’t know were there, emotions that curled around every organ in his body until he felt like he was being suffocated.
As Remo sat by Abby’s bedside, lost in his thoughts and worries, he was suddenly jolted from his reverie by the sound of the hospital room door opening. Blinking away the fatigue that clouded his vision, he looked up to see his family standing in the doorway, their faces a mixture of concern and relief.
As Remo’s family entered the hospital room, he looked up, startled by their unexpected arrival. His father, his younger sister, and his elder brother Matteo stood before him, their expressions a mixture of concern and relief.
"Remo, son, how are you holding up?" his father asked, his voice filled with paternal concern as he approached Remo’s bedside.
Remo managed a weak smile, grateful for their presence but also feeling a pang of guilt for not having informed them about Abby sooner. "I’m... I’m okay, Dad," he replied, his voice hoarse with exhaustion. "Just worried about Abby."
His younger sister rushed forward, wrapping him in a tight hug. "We’re all here for you, Remo," she said softly, her eyes brimming with tears. "We love you, and we’re here to support you through this."
Remo’s gaze shifted to Matteo, his elder brother, who stood slightly apart from the rest of the family, his expression unreadable. Remo couldn’t help but wonder how Matteo had found out about what had happened to Abby, especially since he hadn’t told him yet. This wasn’t how he had planned for his family to meet his wife.
"Matteo, how... how did you know?" Remo asked, his brow furrowing with confusion.
Matteo shrugged nonchalantly, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips. "Tony called me," he admitted, his voice casual but tinged with concern. "He was worried about you, Remo. We all were."
As Matteo’s words hung in the air, Beatrix’s expression hardened, her eyes narrowing with a mixture of anger and concern. She stepped forward, her gaze fixed firmly on Remo, her voice sharp with reproach.
"Remo, how could you keep something like this from us?" she scolded, her tone laced with disappointment. "We’re your family, for crying out loud! We should have been here for you, supporting you through this, not finding out from Tony days later."
Remo lowered his gaze, feeling the weight of his sister’s words like a punch to the gut. He knew she was right, knew that he had been wrong to keep Abby’s condition a secret from them. But in the midst of his own turmoil and despair, he hadn’t been able to think clearly, hadn’t been able to reach out for help.
"I’m sorry, Bea," he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. "I didn’t mean to shut you out. I just... I didn’t know how to handle it all."
Beatrix softened slightly at his words, her anger giving way to concern as she reached out to grasp his hand. "I know, Remo," she said gently, her voice filled with compassion. "But you can’t do this alone. You need to take care of yourself too, you know. If you don’t, how will you take care of Abby?"
Remo’s heart constricted at the reminder of Abby’s fragile state, of the responsibility he bore for her well-being. He knew that Beatrix was right, knew that he needed to pull himself together for Abby’s sake.
"I’ll try, Bea," he promised, his voice tinged with determination. "I’ll try to take care of myself, for Abby.
"Good, now you’re going to let Tony and Matteo take you home and take a bath. You don’t want her seeing you like this when she wakes up. Then you’re going to eat—no excuses. You promise you will try—then come back here to sleep beside her. I know how it feels seeing someone you love battling for their life but you have to take care of yourself too.".
Remo felt a jolt of panic at Bea’s words. Love? Did he truly love Abby? The realization hit him like a tidal wave, overwhelming him with fear and uncertainty. He had never allowed himself to entertain such thoughts before, afraid of the vulnerability and pain that came with opening his heart to another person.
But as he looked at Abby lying unconscious in the hospital bed, her delicate features softened in sleep, he couldn’t deny the depth of his feelings for her. She had become his everything, his reason for living, and the thought of losing her had shattered him in ways he never thought possible.
