Chapter 120: Company

As Abby woke up to the soft light filtering through the curtains, her eyes fell upon Remo sleeping peacefully on the couch. A pang of guilt washed over her as she remembered the harsh words she had directed at him the day before. She shifted uncomfortably, her heart heavy with remorse.

For a moment, she hesitated, unsure whether to wake him or let him sleep. She fidgeted with the edge of her blanket, wrestling with her thoughts. Before she could come to a decision, Remo stirred, his eyelids fluttering open as he slowly roused from his slumber.

Their eyes met, and Abby felt a lump form in her throat. "Remo," she said softly, her voice barely above a whisper. "I’m sorry."

Remo blinked, the sleepiness fading from his eyes as he sat up on the couch. "Hey," he replied gently, his voice tinged with concern. "What’s wrong?"

Abby swallowed, her gaze dropping to her lap as she struggled to find the right words. "I... I was really rude to you yesterday," she admitted, her voice barely audible. "I didn’t mean what I said. I was just... angry and hurt, and I took it out on you."

Remo’s expression softened as he listened to her confession. He reached out, gently brushing a strand of hair away from her face. "Hey, it’s okay," he reassured her, his touch warm and comforting. "I understand. You were going through a lot, and you needed to let it out. Also you already apologized last night. Don’t worry about it."

Abby met his gaze, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "But that’s no excuse for how I treated you," she insisted, her voice wavering with emotion. "You didn’t deserve that. You’ve been nothing but supportive and caring, and I... I pushed you away."

Remo shook his head, his thumb gently wiping away a tear that trickled down her cheek. "You don’t have to apologize, Abby," he said softly. "I know you didn’t mean it. And I’m not going anywhere. I’ll always be here for you, no matter what."

Abby’s lips quivered as she looked up at him, overwhelmed by his kindness and understanding.

"Thank you," she whispered, her voice choked with emotion.

Remo offered her a tender smile, his eyes filled with warmth and affection. "Anytime," he replied, his voice filled with sincerity.

"How are you feeling today?" He asked her softly.

"I’m okay."

Remo gazed at Abby for a moment, his concern evident in his eyes. "Are you sure you’re okay?" he asked gently, his voice filled with genuine worry.

Abby hesitated, her forced smile faltering for a brief moment before she replied, "Yeah, I’m fine. Just tired."

Remo nodded, though he knew there was more beneath her surface. "Alright," he said softly, respecting her response. "If you need anything, just let me know, okay?"

Abby managed a nod before sinking back into the pillows, her mind swirling with thoughts. As Remo quietly left the room to go to the bathroom, she closed her eyes, wrestling with the turmoil within her.

She knew she couldn’t keep pretending everything was okay, but the fear of burdening Remo with her troubles kept her silent for now.

As Remo finished bathing, dressed, and approached Abby, he gently placed his hand on her shoulder, offering a reassuring smile. "I’m going to see a friend who can help me track the lawyer. I’ll be back soon," he assured her, his voice calm and comforting. "Tony has taken care of your father’s body, and he’s here if you need anything. I won’t be long."

Abby remained silent, her emotions swirling within her. But as Remo began to step away, she reached out and grasped his hand tightly.

Remo paused, feeling Abby’s grip on his hand, a silent plea for reassurance. He squeezed her hand gently, meeting her eyes with understanding. "I’ll be back before you know it," he promised, his voice soft but determined. Take care of yourself, okay?"

Abby nodded, her expression grateful yet apprehensive. "Please be careful," she murmured, her voice tinged with worry.

Remo gave her hand one last reassuring squeeze before gently pulling away. "I will," he assured her with a reassuring smile, before turning to leave the room.

Remo found Tony sitting in the living room waiting for him.

"Tony, I need you to keep an eye on Abby while I’m gone," he instructed firmly. "I’m going to meet with Kai. His family are the best trackers in the country. I need to see if they can help me track down the lawyer."

Tony nodded in understanding, his own expression reflecting concern. "Got it," he replied, his tone solemn. "Just... be careful, Remo. We don’t know what we’re dealing with here."

Remo offered a nod of acknowledgment, appreciating Tony’s concern. "I will," he assured him, before turning to leave.

As Remo settled into the car, the weight of his worries pressing heavily on his mind, he reached for his phone and dialed Matteo’s number. After a few rings, Matteo picked up, his voice filled with warmth but tinged with concern as he greeted his brother.

"Hey, Remo, how’s it going?" Matteo asked, sensing something amiss in Remo’s tone.

Remo took a deep breath, his voice steady but heavy with emotion. "I... I’m not doing so great, Matteo," he admitted, his words catching slightly in his throat.

Matteo’s concern deepened at the sound of his brother’s distress. "What’s wrong, Remo? You sound troubled," he remarked, his voice soft with empathy.

Remo hesitated for a moment before speaking, the weight of his words hanging heavy in the air. "Abby’s father... he was shot at the carnival we went to," he revealed, his voice barely above a whisper.

There was a brief moment of stunned silence on the other end of the line before Matteo spoke, his voice filled with shock and worry. "Oh, Remo, I’m so sorry," he murmured, his heart aching for his brother’s pain.

Remo felt a lump form in his throat as he continued, the memories of his mother’s tragic death resurfacing with painful clarity. "It’s... it’s bringing back memories, Matteo," he confessed, his voice thick with emotion.

Matteo’s heart sank at the mention of their mother, knowing all too well the pain Remo had endured after her senseless death. "I can’t imagine how hard this must be for you," he murmured, his voice filled with sympathy

Remo’s conversation with Matteo was abruptly interrupted by the unexpected jolt of the car coming to a sudden stop. Startled, Remo glanced out the window to see what was causing the delay, only to find a jeep blocking their path.

"What’s going on?" Remo asked, his voice laced with concern as he turned to the driver.

The driver’s expression was grim as he replied, "Someone’s blocking us. Looks like we’ve got company."
