Chapter 114: Darts

After their exhilarating ride on the Ferris wheel, Abby and Remo rejoined Martha and Charles, who were waiting for them near a colorful cotton candy stand. The sweet aroma of spun sugar filled the air, drawing them closer with its irresistible allure.

Abby’s eyes lit up with delight at the sight of the fluffy, pastel-colored clouds of cotton candy, and she couldn’t resist the urge to indulge in a sweet treat. She grinned at Remo, her excitement contagious as she tugged him towards the stand.

"Come on, Remo, let’s get some cotton candy!" she exclaimed, her voice brimming with enthusiasm.

Remo chuckled, unable to resist her infectious energy as he followed her lead. Together, they approached the stand, where a friendly vendor greeted them with a warm smile.

"Two cotton candies, please," Abby requested, her eyes sparkling with anticipation.

As the vendor began to prepare their order, Abby couldn’t help but sneak a glance at Remo, who was watching her with an affectionate smile. She felt her cheeks flush with warmth under his gaze, her heart fluttering with happiness at the sight of his adoring expression.

Soon, the vendor handed them two fluffy cones of cotton candy, the sugary strands melting on their tongues as they took their first bites. Abby closed her eyes in bliss, savoring the sweet taste of nostalgia as memories of childhood carnivals flooded her mind.

Beside her, Remo took a bite of his own cotton candy, his lips curved into a smile as he savored the sugary delight. Abby couldn’t help but admire the way his eyes sparkled with joy, his carefree demeanor lighting up the night.

As they enjoyed their cotton candy, Martha and Charles joined them, each with a cone of their own. Abby couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of Charles, his face smeared with pink and blue sugar, a look of pure bliss on his face.

"Having fun, Dad?" she teased, unable to suppress her laughter at his childish delight.

Charles grinned, his eyes twinkling with amusement as he nodded enthusiastically. "Absolutely, sweetheart," he replied, his voice muffled by a mouthful of cotton candy. "It’s been too long since I’ve had one of these."

Abby smiled, her heart swelling with affection for her father and Martha. In that moment, surrounded by the people she loved most, she couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

Abby’s attention was drawn to a lively stall surrounded by a crowd of eager participants. Intrigued, she nudged Remo and gestured towards the commotion.

"What’s going on over there?" she asked, curiosity piqued.

A nearby bystander turned to her with a grin. "It’s a game! You throw darts at targets, and if you hit one, you win a prize!"

Abby’s eyes sparkled with excitement as she turned to Remo, a mischievous glint in her eye. "Let’s check it out!" she exclaimed, already tugging him towards the stall.

Remo chuckled at her enthusiasm, allowing himself to be dragged along. As they reached the stall, Abby eagerly grabbed a set of darts, her competitive spirit igniting with determination.

"Do you want to try, Abby?" Remo asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.

Abby nodded eagerly, taking aim at the row of targets set up before her. With a flick of her wrist, she launched the dart, but it missed its mark by a hair’s breadth, eliciting groans of sympathy from the onlookers.

Undeterred, Abby retrieved another dart, her focus unwavering as she took aim once more. This time, the dart sailed through the air with precision, but it veered off course at the last moment, narrowly missing the target yet again.

Abby let out a frustrated sigh, her competitive spirit dampened by her consecutive misses. She glanced at Remo, a sheepish smile playing on her lips.

"I guess I’m not as skilled as I thought," she admitted, a touch of disappointment in her voice.

Remo grinned reassuringly, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. "Don’t worry, Abby. You’ve still got one more chance."

With Remo’s encouragement spurring her on, Abby steadied her grip on the dart, determined to make her final throw count.

She paused and sighed, "I’m not so sure—"

Her voice trailed off when he stepped behind her, close enough her hair brushed his chest. Her heartbeat wavered. "What are you doing?"

"Supporting my wife." He said, his lips curled into a smile.

Remo placed his hands on her hips and angled her body so she stood diagonally to the wall. "This is the standard stance. It makes it easier to position your center of gravity and aim."

He reached next to them for a dart and slid it into her hand, closing his palm over it so he could guide her arm up. Her back pressed against his front and sent tingles of shivers down her spine. "You don’t want to grip the dart too tightly. Too much pressure will disrupt its balance..."

"Ready?" She felt his breath grazed a spot above her ear.

Her heart hammered in her chest as she nodded.

Remo removed his hand from hers but kept a light touch on her back. She took a deep breath, blocking out the distractions around her as she focused solely on the target before her,

while she drew her right hand back, aimed, and fired.

Time seemed to stand still as the dart soared through the air, its trajectory true and steady.

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd as the dart landed squarely in the center of the target, hitting the bullseye with precision. Cheers erupted around them as Abby’s eyes widened in disbelief, a triumphant smile spreading across her face.

She wrapped her arms around him in a spontaneous hug.

"I did it!" she exclaimed, beaming up at him with pride.

Remo chuckled, returning her embrace with a warm smile. "That you did, Abby. That you did."

Abby beamed at him, her heart swelling with happiness at his encouragement. "Thanks, Remo," she replied, her cheeks flushed with excitement. "I couldn’t have done it without you."

As they celebrated Abby’s victory, the attendant presented her with a prize – a plush teddy bear adorned with a colorful ribbon. Abby’s eyes widened with delight as she accepted the prize, hugging it close to her chest with a grin.

Turning to Remo, she held out the teddy bear with a playful glint in her eye. "Looks like we have a new addition to our carnival adventure!" she exclaimed, her laughter echoing through the night air.

Remo chuckled, his heart swelling with affection as he accepted the teddy bear from Abby’s outstretched hands. "I think you’ve earned it," he replied, his gaze filled with warmth as he pressed a kiss to her cheek.
