Chapter 189: Overturned Roles?

"Captain, we have no choice. We have to leave them behind if we want to survive." One of the soldiers stated as he looked at the group of zombies that was still a distance away grimly.

The captain of the entire group that had been sent over to look for food supply was a middle-aged man with a stern expression on his face. He had a crew cut, currently wearing a set of armor, while at the same time, carrying a spear.

He was the only person who had already reached the bronze rank. And currently, he was not much into using the hot weapons. He had already realized that by using the hot weapons, he was not capable of leveling up.

So, the moment that he awakened and became a mutant warrior, he immediately abandoned the hot weapons. Of course that did not imply that he thought that the power of the hot weapons was to be underestimated.

Although it was true that the guns might not be capable of working on the bronze rank monsters, but, it was completely different for the artillery weapons. It was just that, in order to kill a single monster, they had to spend a lot. Additionally, it was not as if they had a large number of artillery weapons.

So, he felt that it was way better if he attacked personally, using his own strength and his own weapon. Not only would this save them from using a lot of artillery, at the same time causing a lot of damage, but, he would be able to level up as well.

When he heard what his subordinate had said, he looked at him with a harsh expression. "Do you know what you are suggesting? You are suggesting that we abandon the mission that we were given. We were told to look for food supply. But at the same time, if we find any survivor, we had to bring them back to the camp. Do you get the mission that you were given soldier?"

The man who had just claimed that they had to leave the group that they had rescued behind felt his body trembling a little. After all, he himself was only at the 8th level of Rank O, while his captain was a person at the Bronze rank.

So, when facing that amount of pressure that was coming from his captain, he was of course afraid. But still, he gritted his teeth and said determinedly, "Captain, you have to understand the situation that we are currently in. The camp is located in the south, but, we are currently in the eastern part of the city.

Even if we decide to follow the mission, we are going to end up dead, all of us. It might be true that we are strong, but, in the face of such a large number of zombies, we are definitely not going to be capable of surviving.

Additionally, we can be turned into zombies although we have already become awakened warriors. So, why not save ourselves, so that later on, we can save more people? We are sacrificing six people, but we are going to save even more."

Whatever he said was actually logical. But, the captain was definitely not a person that was going to abandon others easily. He had been given a mission, and he was not going to go against the orders that he had been given.

He looked at the guy who had spoken and said, "After we get back to the base, you will have to undergo punishment. This is not the code of a soldier. You were given a mission, you have to make sure that the mission is completed."

The soldier’s expression turned again. He had not expected that the captain was going to be this adamant. Additionally, while they were talking, although they were retreating, but, the speed at which they were retreating was low.

It might be true that the speed of the zombies that was approaching them was also low, but, the zombies were attracting the attention of the other zombies in all directions. So, it wasn’t going to take a very long time before the entire group was surrounded.

Of course, even the captain of the group had already realized that there was something wrong. After all, from the way that the zombies were approaching, they were way more organized than the normal horde of zombies. It was as if there was something that was controlling them from behind the scenes.

"Let us try and look for a higher ground." The captain instructed. Currently, he himself had already realized that if they continued staying in this place, then, they were going to be swarmed.

The only thing that they could do as of now was to find a place that was high, somewhere that was going to prevent the zombies from easily overwhelming them.

The group followed the instructions. Soon, they found a building. This was a 15-storey building. Without hesitation, they began clearing the zombies that were in the surrounding areas as they entered the building.

They had made sure to put the group of six between them, so, they were protecting them as they moved. There was a lady who seemed to be in her late forties. She was the lady whose son had already turned into a zombie. Currently, she had already felt her spirit getting out of her body.

Her husband had already been killed during the time that the monsters attacked. Then, her son had just turned into a zombie after being bitten not long ago.

Coincidentally or not, she was currently closer to the soldier that was claiming that they were supposed to leave the civilians behind so that they could retreat first.

A malicious glint flashed through the soldier’s eyes. The building that they had chosen did not possess a large number of zombies, but, the number of zombies was quite considerable.

So, a single soldier had to deal with at least three or four of them at a time. And, the level of the zombies was not low. As for how they were able to level up, that was still a mystery until now.

The soldier was busy dealing with a zombie, when suddenly, he realized that there was a zombie that had sneaked past him. This zombie was heading towards the group that was being protected.

This was not something that he had done intentionally, but, it was just a coincidence. Even he himself had not expected that there was going to be a zombie that was going to do something like this. It was clear that this zombie had some intelligence.

But, although he had noticed this, he did not react at all. He acted as if he was still dealing with the zombies that were around him, completely ignoring the zombie that was charging towards the group.

To him, this group of civilians was just a burden to them. So, if they were killed off, then, it was going to be easier for their group to be able to escape from here.

"Aaah! A zombie! Get out of the way!" One of the people that was being protected noticed the zombie that was approaching. Additionally, the speed of this zombie was not low as compared to that of a normal human.

The zombie that was approaching was heading straight for the middle-aged lady. So, the person that had noticed the zombie was trying to inform the lady in order to move away from where she was. But, the lady reacted as if she did not even hear what she was being told.

The one that had given the warning on the other hand was not having the intention of stepping forward to help her. After all, even he himself was not capable of dealing with the zombies. Why would he risk his life to save a person that did not seem to have the intention of living?

The scream immediately alarmed the surrounding soldiers. All of them looked in the direction of the people that they were supposed to be protecting, and they were dumbfounded. They had not expected that there was going to be a zombie that was going to be able to sneak in, despite their efforts to prevent the zombies from reaching the survivors.

The captain also realized that this zombie was not normal. Its speed was high for a normal zombie. It might be true that the zombies were also leveling up, but, their strength was the one that was increasing, and not their speed.

He wanted to act, but, currently, he himself was attacked by five zombies. And, each and every of these zombies was actually at the 9th level of Rank O. As for whether this was a coincidence or not, but still, he was not capable of saving that lady.

The lady of the other hand was still lost, still trying to process the fact that she had already lost her entire family. Then suddenly, she felt immense pain on her shoulder.

Bang!

In the next moment, an explosive amount of force pushed her onto the ground, making her land heavily. Even her left hand was slightly dislocated.

Aaah!

Due to the pain, the lady screamed instinctively. Then, she finally came back to her senses. When she realized that it was actually a zombie that was biting her, she remembered how she had lost her family due to the descent of the apocalypse.

As if she had gone into a frenzy, rather than trying to push away the zombie that was biting her, she bared her teeth and began biting the zombie as well. She was not holding back, and as the zombie was retreating with a chunk of flesh from her shoulder, she also retreated with a small chunk of the zombie’s flesh.

Zombie: "?!?!" ’Am I not the one that is supposed to be doing the biting? Why does it seem that I am not as ferocious as this human?’

Of course, that would have been the thought of the zombie if it could actually think. But, although it had some intelligence, it had not reached that level yet. But still, it was slightly stunned.

And, the lady used this chance, completely ignoring the pain that she was feeling, and jumped towards the zombie once again. She wanted to bite the zombie, to destroy it completely.
