Chapter 1264: Chapter 937: Investigation_2
Wu Heng paused, but still said, "I hosted a banquet in the city, inviting association members who had investigated the case with me, including Elder Tapani..."
"Be more concise." Lilith interrupted.
Wu Heng continued, "During the banquet, a female priest followed me into the study, then broke her own neck."
The other side fell silent once again.
Then came Lilith’s skeptical response, "You’re saying a priest from The Holy Court died in your study."
"Yes!" Wu Heng replied.
"Did you kill her?" Lilith’s tone was stern.
"How could I possibly do that? I was framed, and I’m trying to find the real culprit." Wu Heng quickly said.
Lilith asked, "Someone managed to kill a priest in the study of a hero?"
"It was indeed my negligence." Wu Heng admitted, unable to say much else.
"Continue..." Lilith prompted him to keep explaining.
Wu Heng recounted the rest of the events in detail, including the intelligence gathered by the Fifth Princess.
After hearing the complete story, Lilith took a deep breath and said, "How do you always manage to get yourself into trouble wherever you go?"
"That’s not my fault, is it?" Wu Heng replied.
Lilith pondered for a moment and said, "I understand. Prepare two silver coins, cut open a triangular notch, and head to the tavern in the city..."
After hearing her instructions, Wu Heng responded directly, "Alright, I’ll return in a couple of days. I’ll explain everything to you then."
Lilith then asked, "Have you written a report to the headquarters yet?"
"I have, but I haven’t sent it out yet."
"Send it normally. I’ll also notify Hadara in advance," Lilith said.
Hadara is an elf hero, known as the Sword of Justice.
"Understood!"
After hanging up, Wu Heng took out two silver coins and sliced open a notch with his sword.
Donning his hood, he looked into the air and said, "Xiao Xiao, let Aunt Shanaela know that we’re going out for an investigation, so she doesn’t worry."
"Alright!" Xiao Xiao quickly responded and headed upstairs to deliver the message to Shanaela.
Upon returning, Wu Heng took three ghosts and left the place.
...
Gold and Silver Island, Lilith’s Mansion.
After hanging up the call, Lilith furrowed her brows as she sat in her chair. She couldn’t fathom why Wu Heng always managed to stir up trouble wherever he went.
And this time, he merely visited Netalee City, resulting in the death of a female priest.
"Why does trouble always follow him..." Lilith muttered.
She felt Wu Heng was like a mischievous child nobody could manage.
Yet, upon deeper thought, it didn’t seem unreasonable.
A 20-something hero was indeed childlike under the strict scrutiny of people like them.
After mulling over the matter in her mind, Lilith realized mishandling the situation would likely worsen it.
Letting out a soft sigh, she retrieved a silk box from the Space Ring. Inside was a withered black-feathered crow.
She pricked her fingertip, letting drops of blood fall onto the crow, causing its tightly shut eyes to light up one by one.
The crow then sprang to life, staring straight at her.
Lilith detailed Wu Heng’s predicament to the crow, which then disappeared into the void.
A while later, the crow reappeared, speaking in human tongue, "Tell him to uncover the murderer quickly. I’ll convene a meeting tomorrow. Ensure he avoids further conflicts with The Holy Court."
After its message, the crow stiffened and collapsed, lifeless once more.
Lilith put the crow away.
She gazed out the window.
How could she possibly keep him under control? She couldn’t even find him half the time.
Perhaps Wu Heng ought to have a phone linked to headquarters; coordinating with him was far too troublesome.
...
Oak Barrel Tavern.
Wu Heng entered the tavern, greeted by the chaotic sounds, along with the aroma of food and sweat.
The tavern was packed with customers noisily drinking and chatting.
Scanning the room, he headed straight to the front counter.
The plump proprietress wiped a glass as she noticed Wu Heng, asking, "Guest, are you from out of town?"
"How can you tell?" Wu Heng asked.
"I know all the regulars. Someone like you obviously isn’t local," the proprietress said with a smile before asking, "What would you like to drink, guest?"
Wu Heng glanced at the price list on a wooden board. Pulling out several silver coins, he placed them on the countertop and tapped the surface three times casually.
The proprietress examined the coins with a grin and repeated, "What would you like to drink?"
"Mead," Wu Heng said.
The proprietress took the coins and said, "You’ve paid more than needed. Is it all for mead?"
"The second cup with salt," Wu Heng instructed.
"You certainly have peculiar taste," the proprietress chuckled and gestured toward a corner seat. "Please sit over there and wait; I’ll bring it to you soon."
Wu Heng nodded, heading to the designated corner to sit down.
On his shoulder, Xiao Xiao’s voice chimed in, "This is so troublesome. Why not just say Sister Lilith sent us?"
"For people like these, Lilith’s level is too high. Mentioning her here wouldn’t be credible," Wu Heng explained directly.
"Alright!" Xiao Xiao relented reluctantly.
While they spoke, a young maid approached.
She placed two mugs of mead on Wu Heng’s table, saying, "Your drinks, guest."
Wu Heng handed her a silver coin, which she took happily. "The Sea God will surely bless your kind spirit," she said.
"But this mead is only for those who keep their morning prayers," Wu Heng said, offering one of the mugs to the maid.
The maid sat down, playing the part of a companion drinking along with him.
With a smile, the maid asked, "Is there something you need, sir?"
"I’m looking for someone—a man from out of town, about 1.7 meters tall, who was recently in the city asking around for items that nurture ghosts," Wu Heng explained.
Unlike the Fifth Princess’s intelligence network, the Secret Speaker focused on gathering miscellaneous information.
Especially within the association’s affiliated divisions, they likely had notes on anyone seeking ghost-related goods.
The maid maintained her smile, creating the impression of chatting with a generous patron.
She leaned in and whispered, "Please wait a moment. I’ll be right back."
She got up and hurried toward the kitchen area.
Wu Heng waited for a while, finishing his drink before the maid returned. Sitting close again, she leaned in and whispered, "Second floor, third room at the Brilliant Inn in the Central District."
"Is he still there?" Wu Heng asked.
The maid replied, "This is the latest intel. Whether he’s left or not, we haven’t received any updates yet."
"Alright, thank you." Wu Heng pulled out two more silver coins and discreetly handed them to her.
He then got up and exited the tavern.
The maid cleaned up the glasses and dishes, taking them back to the kitchen.
...
Outside the tavern.
Bella spoke softly, "The maid went to the basement. There’s a group organizing intelligence there; it’s likely a fixed information hub run by someone of Level 11. The maid has a tool to verify deception and ensured you were trustworthy before establishing contact."
"What kind of tool?" Wu Heng asked.
"I’m not sure. I only overheard her talking to the Level 11 steward, mentioning the tool showed no anomalies. It seems to be for detecting lies," Bella explained.
Wu Heng nodded and continued, "Glenda, Bella, head over to the inn. If you find the man with the ghost, kill him and secure the ghost."
"Understood!" The two ghosts replied before speeding off.
Wu Heng also quickened his steps, heading toward the Central District.
Soon, Glenda and Bella returned, intercepting him. Bella reported, "The room is empty; it’s already been cleaned."
Glenda added, "The window from that room directly faces the street leading to the City Lord’s Mansion. He must have deliberately chosen this location."
Wu Heng’s eyes narrowed.
The room was empty—did the man leave so quickly?
Wu Heng made his way to the inn.
A middle-aged man greeted him warmly, "Are you here to stay, guest?"
Wu Heng revealed the association’s emblem and said, "I’m from the association, investigating a fugitive. Take me to the second floor’s third room."
The man did not hesitate to comply, "Right away."
He led Wu Heng to the second floor and into the room.
The place was spotless, the bedding neatly folded in a corner.
Wu Heng asked, "When did he leave?"
"This morning," the man replied.
"Do you know where he went?" Wu Heng continued.
"He claimed to be a herbal merchant heading deeper into the Kingdom for business. Upon leaving, he headed toward the North City Gate," the man recalled.
Inside the room, Wu Heng inspected thoroughly, checking the wardrobe and under the bed.
The cleaning was exceptionally thorough.
"Collect everything that was cleaned from this room. Don’t miss a single item," Wu Heng ordered.
The man hesitated briefly but ultimately agreed, "Alright!"
