Chapter 1261: Chapter 936: No Mage, Only Ghosts
The Bishop turned his head to look at the silver mirror hanging on the wall. Reflected in the mirror was his grotesque face.
No lips, no teeth, the entire lower half of his face as if smoothed out by some force, leaving only smooth skin.
Upon hearing, hearing that even the Pope couldn’t undo it.
Hands frantically groping at his mouth, his eyes filled with fear and helplessness.
No mouth—forget not being able to speak.
But how would he eat or drink?
Even if the Pope could dispel this ability, by the time he reached the Holy Hall, he’d have died of hunger and thirst.
Meanwhile, the previously indignant priests and Protective Church Knights standing by the Bishop began avoiding his gaze.
It seemed they had all forgotten who they were dealing with.
A hero!
The youngest of the Human Race, a hero brave enough to defy the entire Holy Court.
Why had they thought to provoke him just moments ago?
The local Bishop’s eyes darted to Nasir, silently begging for help.
Nasir, also a Level 18 Priest, had no official appointment within the local Holy Court. Instead, he was assigned as a Field Envoy to the association.
With another bow, Nasir said, "Leader Wu Heng, I apologize on behalf of the Bishop for his rudeness. It’s because of what happened last night that his words were improper. Please, I ask for your mercy this once."
Wu Heng glanced at the Bishop. Fear warped his expression, yet there was still a trace of spiteful arrogance on his face.
He said bluntly, "The fact that I didn’t kill him was to avoid escalating the situation further. Don’t think your positions make you special. Three days’ time is all you’re getting. I’ll undo it then."
At those words, Nasir fell silent.
In different circumstances, or if it weren’t a Bishop of the Holy Court, perhaps it wouldn’t be as simple as just three days.
Wu Heng shifted his gaze back to Nasir, his tone commanding, "Now, take me to the room of the deceased Priest from last night. I’m not here to negotiate. Execute the leader’s order."
Nasir cast a quick glance at the Bishop standing within the crowd, then refocused his attention. "Leader, Dean, this way please."
With that, he wove through the clergy of the Holy Court and strode straight toward the dormitory section in the back.
The Bishop hesitated for a long while before donning a hooded cloak once again and heading toward the association’s direction.
Wu Heng, meanwhile, followed Priest Nasir upstairs.
They stopped at a room on the third floor. Nasir said, "This is Adrienne’s room. She was known for keeping things tidy. I hope that during your investigation, you’ll try to maintain the cleanliness here."
The person is dead. What use is it to care about keeping the room clean?
Wu Heng pushed open the door and walked right in.
The dormitory’s layout somewhat resembled a private room in a tavern. There was an outer sitting area and a bedroom. The outer room had a round wooden table, wooden chairs, and a few wooden cabinets.
Religious paintings and various religious artifacts adorned the walls.
It was indeed tidy, a testament to her unwavering faith.
Glancing around the room, Wu Heng asked, "Nasir, the deceased Priestess—her last mission was to investigate smuggling activities. Is that correct?"
Nasir nodded. "Yes. Recently in Netalee City, the influx of individuals arriving on the island has been substantial. Among them were fugitive smugglers and mixed individuals. Adrienne was investigating these matters, apprehending those individuals."
"You accompanied her to the banquet?" Wu Heng pressed further.
Nasir’s eyes narrowed briefly but he responded calmly, "At her request, I accompanied her to attend the banquet."
This Priestess had no particular connection with the Fifth Princess, nor with Wu Heng.
Logically, there was no reason for her to attend such an event, yet she went along with Nasir.
Wu Heng cast him a sidelong glance and asked, "Did you notice anything unusual? Such as her demeanor, the way she spoke—anything out of character?"
Nasir pondered for a moment before replying, "She was newly transferred here, so I wasn’t familiar with her habits or behavior. I didn’t notice any significant differences."
"As I recall, don’t Priests carry artifacts to prevent possession by ghosts?"
Nasir answered, "Normally, they do. But Adrienne’s pendant had been damaged."
The pendant!
The very pendant she had yanked off at the scene.
Which meant the pendant was already broken before, and at the scene, she deliberately pulled it off.
It would be impossible to determine whether it had broken earlier or during the incident in the study.
"Did she have enemies?"
"In Netalee City? I don’t believe so."
Wu Heng casually opened a couple of drawers, inspecting their contents, and asked, "Regarding the smuggling investigation—did she apprehend anyone?"
"Not exactly. There was infighting among the suspects, and by the time we arrived, they were all dead. The investigation was closed, and efforts were shifted to tightening checks on those entering the port."
All dead?
And now, the investigating Priestess was also dead.
Before Wu Heng could ask further, Nasir preempted him, "Leader, do you believe Adrienne’s death is connected to the investigation?"
"Smugglers are usually low-level professionals. High-level ones wouldn’t need to use such risky methods to enter the city."
Wu Heng didn’t confirm or deny the statement. Instead, he continued questioning, "What about the bodies of the smugglers?"
"Already disposed of. In this weather, non-priority cases’ bodies are rarely preserved."
"Were autopsies conducted on those bodies?" Wu Heng checked the paintings on the wall and the space behind them.
"Adrienne closed the case outright. No autopsies were performed," Nasir explained.
So, the smuggling angle was essentially a dead end.
The individuals were dead, their bodies incinerated, and with no family or associates to trace, the trail led nowhere.
Wu Heng nodded and moved directly to the bedroom, opening the door.
