The possibility of it being a mere gadget is somewhat low; a Special Item is indeed plausible.
If it’s a Special Item, it would either kill directly as part of its effect or have side effects, such as delayed death.
"That’s possible too." Wu Heng looked at the Fifth Princess and asked, "Brittany, do you have informants in the city?"
The Fifth Princess and the young maid were also analyzing along with the two of them.
This felt even more thrilling than a Great Detective story—defaming a hero to ignite a war between Gold and Silver Island and The Holy Court.
What a shocking conspiracy! The mastermind behind this really has insane courage!
"Brittany!" Shanaela shouted.
"Ah!" The Fifth Princess snapped out of her thoughts.
Wu Heng repeated his question, "Do you have informants in the city?"
"I’ve recruited two groups of informants—one keeps track of black market information, the other gathers updates from city shops and merchants," the Fifth Princess replied.
Wu Heng said, "Have those people collect information to see if there are any tools related to this issue or if there’s a Necromancer in the city."
"Alright, I’ll arrange for it tomorrow," the Fifth Princess agreed directly.
Shanaela continued, "One more thing. The message was sent out this morning, yet the other party managed to kill a Priest in such a short time. They must be quite familiar with The Holy Court or the local association. This angle should be investigated."
"Alright, I’ll visit the association tomorrow," Wu Heng nodded.
The three of them discussed a bit more.
After confirming there were no further issues, everyone returned to their rooms to rest.
...
Back in his own bedroom.
Xiao Xiao floated nearby in her Ghostly form and said, "Uncle, don’t worry; we’ll definitely catch the villain."
Wu Heng smiled, "We’ve faced tougher situations before."
"Exactly," Xiao Xiao wholeheartedly agreed.
Even before becoming a Hero, Wu Heng had been solving various cases. Now that he was a Hero, with three Heroic Spirits beside him, their abilities were unmatched.
After chatting for a while, Glenda descended from the ceiling and said, "No Ghosts detected. Either our guess is wrong, and Ghosts are just being used to frame you, or the culprit is hiding somewhere."
"I think the second possibility is more likely. You’re a Hero; the other side must be acting extra cautiously."
Wu Heng said, "The more careful they are, the harder it will be for us to catch them."
Glenda drifted to the other side and said, "Caution is what allowed them to come up with this way to frame you."
"True!" Wu Heng nodded.
Before becoming a Hero, he always needed a Ghost companion by his side. Now that he was a Hero, his three Ghost companions had reached Level 20, making him less cautious than before.
Deep down, he believed ordinary professionals lacked the ability or guts to pose a threat to him.
Clearly, he had underestimated the boldness of the professionals in this world.
It seemed they truly dared to challenge him.
At this moment, Bella flew back in and said, "The corpse has been sent to the association, and the coroner is conducting the autopsy. The Priest involved has already drafted a report, perhaps fearing you might try to silence them. They’ve arranged for a Church Knight to leave the city overnight and send the document through a nearby fishing village."
"Tapani and Gianvito have analyzed the matter again but still found nothing. They don’t believe you’re responsible either."
Wu Heng nodded, "In Nasir’s mind, though, they’ve probably already decided I’m the culprit."
Glenda said, "Should I catch up and kill the messenger to buy some time?"
"No need; this isn’t something that can be hidden," Wu Heng said.
"Then what’s your plan?" Glenda asked further.
"Since the body has been manipulated by Necromancy Magic, it means the spellcaster must have had contact with them." Wu Heng’s eyes turned cold. "And the circle of people who can get close to a Church Priest is quite limited."
Glenda furrowed her brows and asked, "Do you think this might’ve been deliberately arranged by The Holy Court to create a pretext for war?"
"That’s unlikely. The Holy Court is deeply devoted to faith, and there’s no need for them to resort to such measures," Wu Heng said. "Tomorrow, we’ll investigate more at the association to see if we can find any clues."
"Tomorrow, check out the situation first. If there’s still no progress, send Mini a message to warn Gold and Silver Island to be cautious," Glenda said.
"Alright."
After the conversation, Wu Heng lay down on the bed to rest as the evening deepened.
Glenda’s theory about The Holy Court orchestrating this scheme was unlikely.
The Holy Court didn’t need to sacrifice their own people for such reasons, and its members had a fanatical devotion to faith.
They probably wouldn’t resort to such tactics.
*Ding dong~!*
A message came through on the phone; it was from Shanaela.
「Still awake?」
Wu Heng replied, 「Not yet.」
「Come over, let’s discuss this further.」
「Alright!」
After sending the message,
Wu Heng gave instructions to his three Ghost companions and used the Teleportation Technique to go to Shanaela’s room.
...
The next day, at the local association.
Wu Heng reviewed the autopsy report. The recorded details matched his own analysis of the scene exactly.
The autopsy wasn’t expected to reveal new clues—it was solely meant for documentation.
Eventually, the records would be compiled as formal evidence and submitted to the association headquarters.
Once these records were finalized, they would serve as the official proof, rendering any external speculations invalid.
Tapani said, "The autopsy ends here, but it still couldn’t directly prove whether the body was already dead before attending the banquet, since Necromancy Magic can alter the corpse’s condition."
"I understand. I’m working on finding out who’s behind this," Wu Heng nodded and added, "I need to look at the deceased Priest’s recent mission records."
"Alright, I’ll have them prepared," Tapani said.
Soon after, various records were brought in.
Wu Heng flipped through them one by one, with his three invisible Ghost companions floating in mid-air to review the task logs alongside him.
It was clear that Netalee City had been relatively peaceful with nothing particularly unusual happening.
The most recent instance was an assignment to the city’s black market to investigate a smuggling case.
But that was three days ago.
Finding no significant leads, Wu Heng took photos of the potentially suspicious pages with his phone.
He returned the files to Tapani, then said, "I want to visit this Priest’s residence."
"She lived in the church’s dormitory. Let Gianvito accompany you; it’ll ensure your safety," Tapani opened the door and instructed someone outside.
A staff member went to summon the veteran mage.
After a brief exchange, they headed straight to the church.
...
At the church’s entrance.
The two arrived, and a group of Protective Church Knights and several Priests gathered near the gate.
The leading Priest said, "Dean Gianvito, the church is not open to visitors today. I hope you understand."
He didn’t even glance at Wu Heng; the others bore resentful expressions as they looked at him.
Clearly, the female Priest’s murder had already been publicized among the local church.
Wu Heng had been at odds with The Holy Court, then established a new church upon entering the city, now accused of killing a Priest.
He was obviously regarded as an enemy of the church.
Gianvito said, "This is Wu Heng, the leader of the association. He’s here to investigate Adrienne’s residence to find the real culprit."
The local Bishop cast a cold glance at Wu Heng before harshly questioning, "Wu Heng, what did Adrienne do to provoke you that warranted such humiliation and murder? Now that she’s dead, why are you coming here?"
The others grew visibly angrier.
"The church does not welcome...."
Before he could finish speaking, Wu Heng waved his hand, and the Bishop’s mouth instantly vanished.
"Slandering the leader—think about the consequences," Wu Heng said coldly.
The remaining church members unsheathed their weapons with a loud clamor and prepared for battle.
"Enough, everyone, calm down," Nasir came forward from the back and stood between the two sides, "Leader Wu Heng, why are you here?"
"To investigate the deceased Priest’s residence. You want to catch the true culprit too, don’t you?" Wu Heng stared icily at him.
His patience was wearing thin.
"Alright, I’ll take you there. Can you spare this Bishop?" Nasir asked.
Wu Heng glanced at him and said, "Three days kneeling at the association."
Kneeling for three days!
The Bishop’s eyes widened with fury.
"Isn’t that a bit excessive? He’s just anxious," Nasir tried to intercede.
Wu Heng replied, "Cut one day off, and he can forget about getting his mouth back. Sitting in the Bishop’s position yet speaking with no sense—oh, by the way, your Pope can’t undo a Hero’s curse either."
Even the Pope can’t undo it!
The Bishop’s expression shifted to outright terror.
