Chapter 99: Chapter 99

"It was right here. I left it here all this time and I recently looked at it. How did someone manage to come in here without us knowing? Isn’t one of us always home? He must have gotten one of the cleaners to do it. They are always in my room," Beth accused the staff.

Henry pinched the bridge of his nose. He didn’t care how it was done at the moment since it was already done. They had to worry about getting themselves out of this. "We need to focus on either getting something to quiet him down or for you to go to them and beg-"

"I can’t do that! Are you crazy?" Beth yelled, upset that he would come up with this kind of plan. "I’m never going to beg Veronica to spare me so come up with something else."

Henry had an itch to slap Beth. It was her fault that they were in this situation yet she had the nerve to yell at him. "If you hadn’t kept the phone here then we wouldn’t be in this position so don’t raise your voice at me. I am the one trying to help you now so please, have some sense."

Beth didn’t mean to yell. It was his suggestion that made her react that way. Why should she ever go to Veronica of all people and beg? Did he want to see her lose her mind? Beth would rather be interrogated first before she went to beg Veronica or Liam.

Beth failed to see why her uncle was so angry with her. She hid the phone from him because she had it under control at the time. Had his home been better secured this wouldn’t have happened. They were partly to blame.

"Where is Evelyn? Why is she not at home? Did she tell you she was going somewhere?" Beth asked, worried about Evelyn’s whereabouts. Evelyn didn’t say anything to her but then again, they weren’t in the best place.

Henry rubbed his temple. "She doesn’t tell me everywhere she’s going and she must have gotten bored being home alone. Regardless of where she is, you can’t tell her anything about this. I’ll take care of it so I can calm down."

Henry realised he had been too harsh on Beth. It must have been scary for her to witness Veronica being taken and then to have the phone in her hands. Beth had already been through enough in her lifetime. She didn’t need to feel like he was against her now. He was all she had along with Evelyn.

Henry was surprised by Beth running by him to go out of her bedroom. He thought she might know where the phone was but when he followed her, he saw that she had just heard someone come home.

"You two are back early," Evelyn said, puzzled by their early arrival. "I went for a drive since there was nothing to do here. Was the party fun? Tell me everything."

Beth ran to Evelyn to hug her. She needed one of Evelyn’s hugs right now.

"What is going on? Did something happen at the party? Let me put my food down first, Beth," Evelyn said, unable to hug Beth back since her hands were full. She looked to Henry for answers but he didn’t seem interested in telling her anything. "Beth, speak to me. Are you crying?" She asked, feeling something wet.

Evelyn thought about what Veronica told her. Had Beth realised that something was missing from her room? Beth shouldn’t feel this distraught unless she had something to do with what happened to Veronica.

It didn’t scare her that Beth would be involved. What scared Evelyn was how Henry and Beth seemed to know something and didn’t want to share it with her.

What was Beth crying for?

Evelyn did not like being lied to. Especially with something so serious. She couldn’t have these two drag her into anything. She would be judged more than them since Veronica was her daughter.

"One of you needs to tell me something before I assume the worst. What happened at the party? Did someone mention your career?" Evelyn asked, trying her hardest not to ask about what was important taken from Veronica. They shouldn’t try keeping her in the dark because she would make sure everything came to light.

"Nothing is wrong. I just need a hug, that’s all. I had a look of compliments tonight so I am really happy. I was sad that you couldn’t be there and I thought back to how rude I have been to you. I’m sorry," Beth cried.

She needed to get Evelyn to love her more again. If she made Evelyn love her more to be on her side if this ever got out. Beth refused to lose to Veronica even now.

All of this wouldn’t have been a problem if Veronica had just died. No one would be concerned about a phone or she wouldn’t have to see Evelyn trying to speak to Veronica. Everyone would have forgotten about Veronica by now.

Why couldn’t the person who tried to kill her complete the job?

"Still, that doesn’t seem like enough reason for you to cry so much. I hope the two of you aren’t hiding something from me," Evelyn said, giving them the chance to reveal it now.

"No. She was telling me that she felt bad she went to the party in place of you so we came home early to be with you. The party wasn’t that interesting for us to stay there. I just made myself a few customers and left. I need a drink," Henry said, leaving the two to find a way to calm his nervousness.

Evelyn saw through Henry’s lie. If not for what Veronica said, she might have come close to believing him. Beth was nervous like she had done something wrong. They both had to feel guilty if they weren’t telling her about what happened with Veronica.

What next? When they didn’t trust her, were they going to try to kill her too?

Beth was already accusing her of being too close to Veronica and Henry wasn’t treating her like she was his wife.

Evelyn didn’t trust they wouldn’t do something to her. With Veronica out of the home, she was the odd one out since Henry cared for Beth more.

’I need to be careful,’ Evelyn thought.

If she led either one of them to think she knew something then there wasn’t any telling what Beth or Henry would do to her.

’I need to meet with Veronica again,’ Evelyn decided.
